I arrived in Giessen and finally found a place to stay. I'll be working at Firma Alexaner Binzel & desperately trying to learn German for the next few months. After that, it's back on the road. This time I'll go north and see what's there!.... read more

During my half term break (Scott and I had different holidays) my friend Katie and I decided to go and check out the sights of Berlin.... What a wicked place although we nearly died from the cold and my ear muffs came in handy big time! There is so much to see and do there and so much history as well - it's an awesome mix of the old and the new. We did a four hour walking tour led by a kiwi guy (you can't escape kiwis!) who showed took us around all the important landmarks beginning with the Brandenburg Gate which stood in no-mans land the whole time the Berlin wall was up. We also saw the hotel that Michael Jackson dangled his baby from the balcony, you know the one! The Holocaust memorial ... read more

(June 24 through June 26 2006) June 24 Our train arrived at Traunstein mid-afternoon and Sylvia was waiting for us. She was another friend that my brother had studied with in Portugal. Our decision was to spend a relaxing weekend with her and her family before we moved onto East Europe--this was our last stop in Germany. Bavaria is beautiful, and small town after small town fill the roadway from Traunstein to Trostberg. The day we arrived was hot and the sky was clear, perfect weather to start out the weekend. As we drove towards Trostberg, the Alz River enchanted us, and we wished we could jump in--but we never got a chance. Once in town we dropped our bags off at Sylvia's place, met her family, and headed into the center of town. Her friend ... read more

So much for that last blog being the finale. It´s about 4:30 am in Frankfurt and I´m here at the airport. Unfortunately, my flight doesn´t leave until 11:05 am. By the grace of God I stumbled across an internet station and for one reason or another, I´m able to use it (probably because it´s 4:30 am and nobody works at this ungodly hour). What a great way to pass the time. I´ll probably catch up on my BBC.com and ESPN.com since I´ve neglected both over the past thirty days. My week at L´abri was fantastic, everything I could have hope it would be. The average day went study in the morning, work in the afternoon, and hang out in the evening. There were 30 of us students around the ages of 22 to 26 and we ... read more

Heidelberg was our next stop. We didn't do too much sight seeing but we walked down the hopstrase which is the main street. There was a huge castle on the mountain about the main street that was amazing. We didn't make it up to it but we are hoping to get back another time. We also went to see the old bridge which goes over some river, can't remember the name!! ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Sankt Goar February 8th 2007

Day 23 Thursday 8th February 2007 Rode the gondola’s down Mt Pilatus for the last time. We heard later that after lunch that day, they had to close the mountain as it was too windy for the gondolas to operate. Thank goodness we got down otherwise we would have been stuck up the top of the Swiss Alps. We entered back into Germany and travelled down the Rhine Valley along the Rhine River to St Goar. The Rhine Valley is famous for its wine. The vineyards are small and grow on the sides of very steep mountains so looking after the vineyards is mostly completed by hand. A very hard job to complete. Located along the river are many castles, built beside the river as this was once and still is a major trading area. The ... read more

today is an incredible day. Not because anything really big happened today but now I really feel like time is racing and so soon I will be on the plane travelling with highspeed towards my beloved egypt/Mid. east and my dear friends I will meet there!! I've just been scrolling through previous entries I made on this site, especially the ones I wrote before I travelled to the middle east the first time. 5 days before my departure back then I was quite anxious because I was travelling into the unknown with many discouraging me to go there at all. But now its like visiting a place again I learnt to love so this time I really really really enjoy all the preparations. When watching the german sky from my room I smile... not because it's ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Cologne February 4th 2007

I am back from a weekend in Cologne visiting my friend Jeremy. Two of the guys I work with (Phil and Jim) came along, so it was a bit of a ZPro reunion. Although I had been to Cologne in the summer, it was really fun to go back at another time of year to see how the city changes with the seasons. We were very lucky in that all of Europe is in a warm spell, so we were not subject to freak snowstorms or bitter winds off the Rhine. Quite a relief. And sorry – no photos of this trip. I frankly just didn’t get around to taking any. So – first things first. I arrived late Friday evening, about an hour after Phil and Jim because Zurich has these crazy rules about too ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich February 4th 2007

(June 22 through June 24 2006) June 22 We left Nuremberg drunk and with heads low. The train ride was subdued, and were able to take a nap to rest up before we arrived into Munich. Our time in Munich was spent solely drinking beer. We walked from the station to our hostel, the A&O, and were able to beat the crowd that also had come from the Ghana-US game. Once there, we left our bags in our room, and headed to the lobby to get something to drink. After a few conversations with other fellow travelers, we were told that the upstairs bar wouldn't close until later, as the one in the lobby was closing. Headed up there, and talked to the two cute bartender's one from Mexico and the other from Colombia, and met ... read more
