It seems like the cold and flu season as finally caught up with us--or maybe we just caught up with it. Last night the thin walls of our hostel in Berlin echoed with the sick hacking of Derek, my roomates, and other people in other rooms and on other floors. Everyone on the street and in the stores is riding themselves of phelm, and nooooo one is covering their noses or mouths. Derek just coughed. So did the girl beside me. It's only a matter of time before I succumb too..... Ahh! Well, Nelly Furtado was pretty fun. She puts on a big show, and it's kind of fun to think that someone who once walked the same halls as me, had the same teachers and musical training (Sandy King, haha) as me, and sat in ... read more

When deciding whether or not to take a trip to Berlin, the thought that I had "done" Germany already definitely came to mind more than once. Spending a week in Munich last semester had made me an expert on schnitzel, sausage, Burger King (strangely, a German staple), and ordering pastries in Deutsch. Much to my surprise, Munich had in no way prepared me for Berlin, as the two cities could not have been more different. In fact, Berlin remains completely separated from any of the European cities I have encountered so far. In some strange way, Berlin feels more American than European - a sprawling metropolis of diverse modern architectural features and wide traffic-filled avenues. If Berlin must be compared to any city - although any comparison trivializes the strangeness of the city - I would ... read more

A cloudy weekend with little on the photos front. Vertigo from the top of the Cathedral, a variety of sausages, old-school Bavarian-style eateries, a Roman museum and the world famous Kolsch beer and banter.... read more

Everything is going well. Spent the last two days on trains with a few quick runarounds in Brussels and Cologne in between (the cathedral is amazing). On the Ost-West Express to moscow myself and Nick shared a 3 berth compartment with Vlad - an electrical engineer from Moscow. We drank 1 litre tins of beer, and shot vodka with a polish guy named Marco who we decided to leave when he couldn't sit up straight. Ross and Zander's roomate Alexander gave us tasty sausage. Sleeping on trains is great apart from being woken at 03.30 by border control. Now we are in Moscow - its freezing cold, but everything is cool. will keep you posted...... read more

well i've been in germany now for a month. i'm loving it. the friends i've made so far have been the glue holding it all together. My job is not as fun as i wish it could be. I work with preschool age but do not have a lead teacher. Myself and another intern run the class. We are both experienced with school aged children so the younger crowd is a bit difficult. My class is always hecktic and no matter the situation there is always at least one child crying. Minus the fact that its stressfull i love my kids and appriciate the daily hugs i get from them. However, I could go with out the daily change of pee pants! Here are some pics of the friends i've made. Later posts will show more ... read more

Kaley, Carla (The girl we met in Venice who is from L.A.) and I took the night train from Venice to Munich so we arrived in Munich very early which actually worked out perfectly because we got to the hostel and realized that since it was also carnival in Munich that most touristy things would be closed the next day. Since we really wanted to see Neuschwanstein (the gorgeous castle that inspired Disney’s Cinderella castle) we had to go the day we arrived so we just dropped our bags off and headed for the train. Again, we saved some money on this excursion because in Bavaria they have a thing called a Bavarian Pass where up to 5 people can ride the train to anywhere in Bavaria and back for only 29 euros. So we ... read more

Ok, so this isn't exactly during my round the world trip but I have just come back from a fantastic weekend in Berlin, and this will give me a chance to try writing a real blog with photos and things. So here goes: Arrival Up at stupid o'clock (2.30am) to get to stansted in time for our 6.30 flight. Thankfully, thursday's snow had abated enough for the airport to be running smoothly again. Unfortunately, unforseen engineering works meant that the stansted express was delayed. So we arrived at the airport 5 minutes before the check in closed, and 45 minutes before our flight was due to leave! Luckily, everyone at ryanair was extremely helpful and we got to the departure gate with enough time to get comfortably settled on the plane. We arrived at Berlin Schonfeld ... read more
