New Year's Eve dawned cold, but sunny. I grabbed some food at the supermarket and then made the slippery walk to the train station. I caught the 9 am train to Bern and it was a pleasant ride out of the mountains. In Bern I switched to another train to get me to Basel where I picked up a German ICE to take me all the way to Cologne. I didn't realize how much I missed the comfort and speed of the ICE's. Southern Europe's trains just don't compare with those in the north. We crossed the border without any formalities whatsoever. No one even got on the train to check passports, which I thought was a bit weird. The ride took about 4 hours and we pushed all the way up to 260 km/h for ... read more

Berchtesgaden and the Salt Mines Today we awoke with a plan in mind. The plan was to head to Berchtesgaden to see one of the salt mines and possibly see Hitler’s Eagles Nest. Shower Struggles As I’ve told you in previous blogs, it’s always a crap shoot when it comes to bathroom facilities in Europe. We’ve been lucky since we left Spain and have always had good running water and stand up, glassed in showers. Because of the fact that all has been hunky-dory since Spain I haven’t commented on this often. Well, here we do have good, hot running water, but we have a stand up shower in a bathtub with no shower curtain. Why you would have a standup shower in a small bathroom without a shower curtain, I don’t know!! As I ... read more

June 18, 2006 The train departed the Constance train station at around 11:30--my brother and I had just missed the 10:30 train by seconds, so we had to wait. We were on our way to Leipzig, about eight hours away with all the connections, for the France-Korea game. We soon realized we weren't going to be able to make the game on time unless we figured out a plan to put our bags somewhere before the game without much time being wasted in Leipzig. The train arrived into Leipzig 20 minutes before the game started. The trip had several stops and change of trains, so we soon made a plan to leave the bags in Offenburg, the stop with the longest amount of time between trains. The ride was beautiful, passing through the hills of the ... read more

Happy Holidays to all. We started our Christmas morning in Salzburg with a small but fun celebration then drove the 112 kilometers to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It was very cold and there was ice and frost on everything we saw making everything white. It was like driving through a Christmas card. We had Christmas dinner at Reindl, a traditional Bavarian restaurant. When we emerged it was snowing! A white Christmas after all. We are staying in a fantastic hotel with a view of the Zugspritz, the tallest mountain in Bavaria at 3000 meters. You do the math. We woke up to the view in the picture you see here. Wow! We headed out in the car to find some castles and within an hour we found two. Hogenshshalokslfjkdluu Castle (I forgot how to spell that one) and Neushwanstein ... read more

Updates are on the way!! more photos are yet to be uploaded! just wait Hello Friends from around the world!! I apologize for going under the radar lately, internet is very sloooww here in my town and makes updates difficult. More blogs and photos are coming though , so no need to fret! The next several blogs are about my vacation for the Christmas hoolidays: Germany, Paris, the Alps, around France, and soon I will include my Birthday in London!! Right now, I am back in my town teaching english to the french kids. Today we learned the most important lesson (in my opinion!) in order to survive in the USA..."How to order in an American Restaurant". Lots of fun simulating a US restaurant. The kids learned key phrases and vocabulary for reading the menu, ordering, ... read more

(June 16th through June 18th 2006) June 16 We left Mönchengladbach early on Friday morning. We had decided to go somewhere that was small and had beautiful views. Our travel guide barely mentioned Constance, so we decided to take a chance. The train ride was wonderful, though we had no seats. We changed trains twice, and the views were great. Eight hours later, we arrived mid-afternoon into Constance. It was grey, and the train station was a bit run down, and we weren't feeling that great. As soon as we walked out the city jumped out and we knew we were going to enjoy the town. We walked north on Konzilstrasse two blocks and walked into the tourist office. They informed us that all but one hostel were full, and it was quite a trek, but ... read more

Twas the Night before Christmas and all through the House…or Hotel… Christmas Eve Breakfast Buffet After sleeping in a bit today we headed down to the Christmas (Eve) Morning Buffet. It was really nice and very crowded. Besides the normal cold cuts, bread and assorted jams there was bacon and eggs as well. We ate and ate and ate…by time we were done we were fully stuffed and felt the need to get some exercise to work off all the food. Castles…the Real Thing Despite the fact that both of the castles in the area were closed, we headed over in their direction figuring we could at least see them from outside and maybe walk around a bit. Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles are both beautiful and classic. King Ludwig (King during the late 1800’s) grew ... read more

Traveling to Fussen From Munich we headed west to get back on the Romantic Road and thus head south. We started by heading to Augsburg which is one of the larger cities on the Romantic Road. After about an hour of driving we were dead in the middle of Augsberg and had realized that Augsburg was a pretty drab place. Thus, our time in Augsburg was only as long as it took us to drive in and then out again. The trip from Augsburg to the next town on the Romantic Road only took about a half hour. We found ourselves in a quaint little town called Landsberg. Landsberg is located directly on a river and has a beautiful old town that was full of shoppers since today was the last Christmas shopping day in ... read more

Munich: Deutsches Museum and The Residenz Deutsches Museum: Germany’s Smithsonian After a light breakfast provided by our hotel this morning we set off for the Deutsches Museum. In keeping with our hands on approach to museums, the Deutsches Museum seemed like the perfect place to start our day’s adventures because it contains 10 miles of exhibits that range from aeronautics to food processing. When the two mile hike through 30ish degree weather was done, we were really looking forward to some serious inside time. Thankfully the museum was warm and large enough to keep us inside for hours. We started out with the history of shipping section which contained a few full sized ships and about 200 small scale replicas of interesting historical ships. Kel spent some time in the ancient section of the shipping ... read more
