Ok. We’re back on our previously scheduled vacation. What an amazing adventure. As it turned out we missed the last train to Munich from Cologne last night, so we stayed in a “Euro” hotel there. What a beautiful little city. Check out the church that was right outside our door. We had our first authentic German meal at Frueh (Jerry tells me it means “new”). The food and beer was good. As soon as we sat down they plunked 4 beers down on the table. The boys agreed that their first beer tasted like dirty water. (Good.) I thought it tasted like beer, so I had some and then some more. Beer is good. We caught our connection this morning at 6:45 and finally arrived in Munich at Noon. It was very pleasant looking at the ... read more

Hello. Im in Trier, Germany, which is about a 25 minute drive from Luxembourg. It is the oldest city in Germany, with its roots tracing back to over 2000 years ago during the Roman Empire. Jessica, my girlfriends sister, is taking law here at the local university, and so Janina and I decided to swing by before heading back to Mülheim. Since I last wrote, i spent a few more days in Neckarhausen with Janinas family. It was a complete German experience. Every morning I would wake up and walk into Janinas grandmothers dining room. She would be waiting for us with plenty of food and before we could properly wake up we would be stuffed full of food. She even offered us beer, but at 9 or 10 in the morning, I politely declined. We ... read more

(June 10 to June 16 2006) Mönchengladbach is a town in western Germany. The center of town is nice, and the buildings are beautiful. The town is small, however the population is surprisingly +260,000, and we found little to do during our time. A NATO or British Armed Forces base (Pilar told us differently everytime) is set up there, and is where we spent most of our time--we spent most of our time at our friends place, bored. The main attraction is the football stadium, and many locals told me they were very disappointed it wasn't selected to host a match for the 2006 World Cup. June 10 We left Düsseldorf late afternoon and arrived in Mönchengladbach early evening. The town was quiet and the streets were empty. We walked up the hill, where the main ... read more

(June 9-June 10, 2006) June 9 We left London late afternoon on Ryan Air. They may be cheap, but very uncomfortable. The airline doesn't fly directly into Düsseldorf, rather into Weeze. The airport is tiny, and as we go through customs and get our airbags, the airport is empty, only a handful of gates, and everything is closed. The person at the information desk, very helpful, was about to leave, and we were lucky enough to get some information from her. An ATM adventure, and an hour bus drive to Düsseldorf later, we were ready to go. We got off the bus, and climbed on the first taxi that stopped. We forgot to look at the map in the bus, and we had no idea where we were compared to the hotel--ends up that there are ... read more

DAY 3; This morning we leave Amsterdam on our way to St.Goar but first stopping at Cologne and driving through the Rhine Valley. We get to Cologne in a couple of hours and are happy to see that the Great Christmas Markets are still on and thriving. We are first greeted by the BIGGEST Cathedral in Europe, which is soooo large that even if you lie on the ground to take a photo you still cant get it all in. It is absolutely amazing, i have no idea how they could build something like that so long ago when they haven’t got any of the technology we have today! And its not just that its so big, but there is so much detail in every brick and door way and window, it is truly spectacular!! Anyways ... read more

Traveling to Munich through Dachau: The Shadow of Tragedy Cold Day, Warm Car Since last night was an early one to home and bed, we were up bright and early to eat our (free, yay!) breakfast and get on the road. Mike’s new addiction is bread with butter and honey on it, while I’m all about the yogurt with muesli - German granola. I think it’s great . . . Mike grumbles at the loud crunchiness of it (for all that know him well, this makes sense) so early in the morning. Over the last couple of days, it has been getting consistently colder and colder. We’ve been gifted with some great clear, blue sky days, but those days are also the coldest ones. We jumped straight into the car after breakfast and headed out of ... read more

Hey people, That's me back at the youth hostel, had a great day today!! Wasn't so cold today. Started off waking at 9am instead of the intended 6am, heehee but it was worth catching up on the sleep I missed for about 30 hours before leaving. Ticket to Warsaw is still not her, so I popped into Ostbahnhof ReizeCentrum, and no one had any idea what I was on about, so I just phoned the online centre who said it should get here tomorrow. Only, there's 30 boxes for mail at Waldenser Str 30, which is the address I asked it to be sent to. So the nice person who owns this hostel put up a wee note for the postie saying any unspecified mail should be sent here :) This took me most of the ... read more

Traveling the Middle of the Romantic Road The Romantic Road…what is it you ask? The Romantic Road is a strip of towns in southern Germany who have joined together their tourist advertising budgets in order to create a powerful force drawing hundreds of thousands of people to the area each year. The “Road,” which is more like a path that uses many roads, starts in south of Frankfurt in Wurzburg and ends south of Munich in Fussen. Between these two points there are many small towns that have that genuine “German” feel. Some of these towns have little to offer more than a few hours walk around town, while others have cathedrals, museums and castles. Rothenberg, where we were last weekend, is one of the bigger Romantic Road towns and therefore warrants at least a ... read more

Cheri says to me "let's go shopping", groan says I. "There's wine..." says she and I was sold. We have been told that the Christmas markets in Frankfurt are something to behold. So we went with every intention of beholding. However, really the story starts a little earlier, around about the time that we were selecting our method of arrival and subsequantly learnt a very very important lesson. We could either get there using a standard airline or using a budget airline. We're fairly poor travellers, what do you think we chose? Perhaps though it is a false saving. The problem with a budget airline is that they tend to fly out of airports which are not on the beaten track. Heck, they don't even have an unbeaten track sometimes, just a sort of parting in ... read more
