My bags are packed...I'm ready to go...well kind of... WHAT A YEAR! As I end my time here in Germany and embark on my crazy adventure through Europe and then back to the United States, I can't help but take the time to reflect over this year and what it has meant to me. It has been filled with extreme emotional highs and lows as well as plenty of time for self reflection. Even though the good times definitely outweigh the hard times, it is important that I don't forget even the major lows. Spending time alone with yourself can be a very trying and difficult experience, no one likes to be lonely, but it also teaches you about who you are as a person and who you want to be. In all of my personal ... read more

After three days of groggy afternoons asleep and sunrises wide awake I have started to get on a somewhat normal schedule. I took my first walking tour of the city which was interesting. It was led by a chipper New Zealander named Sean who I got along with nicely. When I told him I was in Europe indefinitely he said I reminded him of himself a few years back, and he put the idea in my head of eventually being a tour guide. It would take some work and it is an interesting way to live, but I could envision myself doing that for a while. Before I went on the walking tour I had my first bought of loneliness set in, but fortunately it faded as I walked the streets of the capital of Bavaria. ... read more

June 20, 21, 2008 Black Forest Region, Germany The drive from Dijon, France to Baden-Baden, Germany is a few hours of more varied scenery as you travel from farmland into a more rolling hills and forested area. We were pleasantly surprised with Baden-Baden. This is a very nice, very clean, small city with a very tourist friendly city center with limited vehicle traffic and lots of good restaurants. Nice place to take a break after Paris. Baden-Baden is at the top end of the Black Forest Region of western Germany and a favorite stop for tourists exploring the region. We had a short stay here enjoyed a good time in a very nice city. Saturday morning we “hit the road” for Bern, Switzerland. We took a small detour through Stuttgart, Germany and down through the Black ... read more

Hey all, Well, tomorrow begins my last week of classes, and it still feels like I will never get to go home. I'm not looking forward to finals at all... for many reasons. I guess I never really got used to the University system over here. Classes once a week, Professors canceling classes left and right, and I never feel sufficiently prepared whether I go to class or not- for most of my classes. My human resources class, where my teacher doesn't speak any English (and it's supposed to be an English class) feels like a lost cause to me right now. I haven't learned a single thing from him all semester, but am doing the studying from the reader on my own, since that is in English. At this point I am praying that the ... read more

My most vivid memory from this day was the young mother, with daughter in tow, who boarded the train in Bebra. I was riding the regional trains in southern Germany with my end goal being Trier on the Luxembourg border. But here were these two strangers traveling seemingly anywhere, and it occurred to me that my fellow travelers, riding that day on a fast train, would be missing this experience. I sat and watched out the window at the passing scenery, yet as often as I could I witnessed this microcosm of German family life. The little girl would talk, or her mother would feed her or read to her, or she would strike up a game in the passageway playing with whatever she could find. I was resorting to an old standby in the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Saxony » Dresden June 21st 2008

Hello all! I finally made it to Deutschland =) Dresden is absolutely GORGEOUS, and highly under-rated. I’m posting this late because I don’t have internet access, however have found that cafes in the basements of mini-malls make for great writing spots (plus im waiting for my sushi.. thought I’d be brave after that Czech fish fiasco..lol). I found out the hard way that when folks say “backpacking through Europe” they really did mean that LITERALLY, thus packing light (even for me) means next to nothing, because you DO have to lug it all around. Thankfully my duffle bag (that weighs god knows how much) can be flung around me shoulders for easy walking, however I think I may look like the hunchback of Notre Dame by the time I actually get to Notre Dame! I met ... read more

Hellooooo American friends and loved ones, Sara speaking. So for awhile last night we didn't know whether we were in Germany or Turkey. For those who don't know, Turkey beat Croatia last night in the EuroCup quarterfinals and apparently, Berlin has a large Turkish population. Well, the city went totally nuts!!! Leah and I meandered down the streets amongst a throng of jubilant Turks waving flags and shooting off fireworks-- it was a blasttt and a half! It really improved my perception of the city, as I was a bit intimidated by the intial industrialized, graffiti-ed look of it as we came in from Amsterdam. Today was pretty decent weather-wise and we mostly roamed the city, making use of our Berlin CityCard. The Berlin public transportation system is SO efficient, I'm super jealous and think that ... read more

Ah, hello everyone. today is another lovely German morning. It is a nice 78 degrees out. I hear back in santa rosa it is at least 107. No thank you.. I have been busy touring the German countryside. Barbara has shown me to several different little and large German villages. I am going to sit down with her today and write them all downin my journal, but for now you are just going to have to accept that they will remain nameless in this entry. yesterday I went to a grand old castle, almost more than a thousand years old. We went to this castle not just for architetures sake. Inside the castle was home to some to at least a hundred different birds of prey. Babs had taken me to see the falconers. It was ... read more

Hello all, Sara here! So, after a very long train ride from Amsterdam, we are safe and sound in Berlin at our hostel, watching Croatia play Turkey in the EuroCup. Funny stories about how our train ride to Amsterdam went...including how we learned days of the week in Dutch and other random happenings. Internet is not cheap, so the entries may be a bit more intermittent.... Love you all, chat with you later!... read more
