Travel Blog Day 8 Munich We arrived in Munich and headed down to the hotel… a little disappointing, we were supposed to have AC and a king size and single bed… no AC and we have a single and a queen… it is warmer here too, getting over 80 today, so it was again difficult to sleep. Josh and I are both running on low energy, we tend to walk really slowly (but a lot of people do that here). Last night since we got in kinda late, we couldn’t do any of the guided tours, so we decided to just head up to the English Garden’s, which is the worlds largest beer garden (by acreage). It was basically just a massive park, but there were boatloads of people there just sunbathing and playing in the ... read more

Indi 5.... read more

Rubbing the sleep from my eyes as the streams of hot water run down my body, I attempt to come back to the world of the living. The last night in my own bed was quite good, and though I was not fully awake, I did feel fully rested. Reaching over my head, prepared to wince in pain, I was surprised to find the motion didn't bother me. Water skiing has it's price, I suppose. Drying off, and packing the last few things, I wonder what I have left behind. The planning has been immense though, if there are details I have missed on this trip...its not from lack of planning. Making my bed, I reflect on the past week - a turmoil of excitement, anticipation, and the sadness of leaving a place and people you ... read more

So after a big swing out west and then along the south, I am back in Munich, one week later. After my last entry we went to Mittenwald and stayed there one night. It would have been nice if it had worked out there but at the same time the place was far out of actual Mittenwald - most DJH hostels aren´t actually IN the towns after which they´re named. So we left early in the morning from Mittenwald the next day and went to Berchdesgaden, a nice little mountain town in a projection of Germany down into Austria. It´s surrounded by beautiful mountains, and a quaint little place overall. Upon getting there we immediately secured lunch, being very very hungry. We found a touristy-looking streetside restaurant (the waitresses wore traditional Bavarian dresses, complete with poufy ... read more

Oelde, Germany 22.6.8 Sunday. Rolf was waiting at the Frankfurt customs exit for us at about 6 am and drove us to his home in Oelde. In the afternoon he and Frieda took us to an old WW2 radar headquarters where the cellars now house an extensive collection of radio and communications devices. Most were extensive collections of radios, radiograms and TVs but there were some special ones. There was the receiver used to receive the first Sputnik transmissions. There were WW2 Russian and German radio receivers, the first “mobile” phone, a collection of modern ones and a large V12 generator. Two of the 3 men there spoke English and were able to explain things, for example it was illegal to listen to overseas radio from 1933 until the end of the war. We had coffee ... read more

Hallo all, I am just wrapping up another day in Berlin. We went to visit the Reichstag today which is where all the Parliment sittings occur. There was a lot of security clearance for a rather boring tour and an awfully rude tour guide. We got to visit one of the many Holocaust memorials. I will have to post some pictures sometime because it is rather indescribable. I just got back from a meeting with a 27 year old Parliament member. She is apart of the Green (Environmental) Party and had many interesting things to say. She started off our discussion with fluent German so I could only pay attention to the first few minutes because my head was spinning (they talk waaaay too fast and spit a lot). But things got more interesting and I ... read more

Hello!!! Well, I am in Berlin sitting in a coffee shop and it is a beautiful day! The past two days have been a bit hectic, but I am beginning to adjust. Yesterday we watched the Euro championship game in the fan mile and it was crazy. Something like 50,000 people. We were in the middle of it. A lot like being downtown for Mardi Gras, but no one throwing things at you and no one getting naked. I have walked around most of the city and it pretty calm. People don't drive all that crazy here and for the most part people have been pretty nice, not necessarily helpful, but nice. Yesterday we also saw Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall. It is amazing to me that in such a short period of time Berlin ... read more

I suppose this may qualify as the biggest cheater entry ever, at least in my world. I think Lana has two worse entries than I do - case in point "Antarctica" and the Greece ones from home. But I suppose it's best that they are written as opposed to being forgotten completely. It's been a whirlwind of a last few days and I will do my best to capture what I can, it may be best to ask me about some of these RIDICULOUS situations in person and we can share a good laugh about my story-telling antics. I suppose some of you are imagining me rolling my eyes or raising my voice or even flapping my hands about (as I have a tendency to do), but hey - nothing beats the real thing right? :) ... read more
