I should've written about Düsseldorf last week when I was more excited about it.. but anyways.. I went there just for 3 days to go to the British Consulate and get my visa.. I had to wait 3hrs to be interviewed, but everything went right! :D So I left the consulate and went straight to the hbf to buy my ticket to.. PARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS!!! (I wanted to go to London by train cause I have way too much stuff to take on the plane and the train from Darmstadt stops in Paris, so I thought... why not stay for a few days?! :D hehehe) Anyways... Düsseldorf is really cool! I didn't really go sightseeing cause I kinda didn't have the opportunity.. I mean, I had! I had hrs of waiting before I could go to Andre's appartment!! ... read more

The Keller's in Vorst (outside of Dusseldorf) . . . After a weekend of luxury traveling in Prague with Kristin, I humbled myself and actually used one day of my six day train pass for eastern Europe. So, as Kristin and the kids flew back to Dusseldorf, I took a comfortable nine hour train ride to meet them back at their house. I don’t think Cameron quite understood why I wasn’t flying. (Currently my time is more expendable than my dollars!) Kristin and her family are going on their 15th year in Europe (Kasey's work is there) and they’re going on their second in Dusseldorf. They rented this great funky castle out in the country where their neighbor is a farmer with lots of corn fields and cows. It was a great place to chill out, ... read more

I'm back, after a wonderful weekend. Just as a note for now and the future, I'll probably reply to comments to which I should reply at the beginning of each blog-post-thing briefly, or something. It's pretty cool to get comments. Even ones calling me a slave, or dirty little slave, or something else Carissa-ish. Anyhoo, so real quick... Prof.-- that meeting in the fall sounds like a great idea! It's surprising how soon the fall is coming. Roughly 6 weeks. Eek. Lil Ellen-- I know :( That was actually the one drawback for me-- a couple of friends and I had made indefinite plans that I obviously can't keep, and I had especially wanted to see you and have coffee and svu-watching glee. Can we reschedule for winter break? :D Whew okay. So I found out ... read more

Thanks Nadja for emailing my friends.......and my professors.... It was quite helpful for me. It is still hard to type here and these computers freeze quite a bit and really have trouble with groupwise, which is why I asked her or Stacie to do it... but I didn't expect any professors to ever read my blog, so let's hope they don't. If any of them actually bring that agony upon themselves, I apologize in advance, especially for my unending indecisiveness. I also intend to blame all spelling and grammar mistakes on my keyboard or the fact that I write stuff in this blog that is from my personal journal written in German. Some may notice that I edited my first entry to clean up lazy word choice and typos, etc. Hahahaha. Carissa, I love your comment. ... read more

Yo whaddap homedoggs. Dont expect anything whacked out like what stacie has in her travel blog. Germany is not freakishly culture shocking. Right now Im living in Duisberg, about 10 minutes away from Düsseldorf, where the Goethe Institut is, where Im taking classes. Where Stacie sees all US's successes in her blog, I see some of its failures and potential. I dont have a whole lot of time because I want to catch the 12:15 Sbahn (one thing I love about Germany), but I just wanted to be able to start my blog too... even if it wont be as wildly exciting. But its interesting for me to have read Steaks blog now, instead of when I was still in the US. Coming here has put my life goal in another perspective-- most shockingly coming back ... read more

Day 14, 14th June. Tessenderlo - Leopoldsburg - Roermond (HOLLAND) - Elmpterwald (GERMANY) Woke up early, had breakfast and set off the same time as yesterday. There was blue sky and good cycle lanes ahead of us. After passing Leopoldsburg we went through a huge military area of Belgium before getting to Bree where we used up all our Belgian francs at Aldi and ate in the town square. My appetite was back with a vengeance! After then it was a straight ride to the Dutch border and coffee shops. We just cycled in, past an empty border station and along confusing cycle ways to Roermond where I managed to post my Barbie card off to Kathryn. Afterwards, Scott, Rory and I found an internet coffee shop which sold Colombian ‘specials’. We had one and checked ... read more

US v. Czech Republic in Gelsenkirchen My journey from Salzburg to Cologne, where I was staying, and then on to Gelsenkirchen was longest over-land travel of my trip to that point. I left at around 7am, and arrived in Cologne just after 2pm. Since the US vs. Czech Republic game was that night at 9pm and it was the only game for which I had tickets, I wanted to be sure that I was there early. Luckily I ran into my friends, Josh, Jer and John in the train station. They were already leaving for the game. Wondering why they were leaving six hours before gametime, I was surprised to discover that the game actually started at 6pm! Considering that they were holding my tickets and planning to meet me outside the gate of the stadium, ... read more

Hi. Pics later, and videos. I am trying to drink away my sorrows in Gelsenkirchen after my team decided to not play today and pretend like they are the fucking worst team in the World Cup. So I write you semi-drunk from Gelsenkirchen central square.... Fuck. I had so much hidden confidence for my nation's team and really looked forward to the match. We lost 3 to fuckin 0, and the goals came at the worst time. Minute 4, then right before halftime then after we hit the post and midway through the second half. Fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No one wanted to play. No one saw it as if this was the world cup except a player here and there. Thankfully the times since have been really fun. I love the Czech fans. They are so fun and ... read more

After such an awesome day yesterday, I was sort of weirdly excited to be heading home. We got the airport, which was again, surprisingly nice. We slowly got back into being American by getting McDonalds for lunch - but mostly because we had no cash and needed to use our cards, which regardless of what people say, are not the best way to pay for things in Europe. We were randomly on the plane back to JFK with my friend Jeff from Pitt, and again, what I said was true. The further you get from home, the smaller the world becomes. That was the 4th Pitt person Id seen in the past 5 days. We sat next to an interesting girl from Greece / Connecticut on the plane, and a nice guy from Connecticut. It wasnt ... read more

After a great night sleep, we decided that we would get a train up to Gelsenkirchen even without tickets around 11 am. As soon as we stepped into the train station in Dusseldorf, we could tell it was going to be an amazing day, and one that we could NOT miss. From one station to another, we met more and more American fans who broke into random chants and cheers. We met three cool kids from Wisconsin who were going to the game, then an awesome 27 year old couple from the US (but who lived in London) - Ryan and Brooke. Once we arrived in Gelsenkirchen, the athmosphere exploded as thousands of Czech and US fans poored into the streets. I was real confident of the game, and thought there was no way Czech Mix ... read more
