We left at 5.00am in order to make sure that we had ample time to get to Dover to catch our 8.15am ferry, allowing for predictable road-works and other “issues” on the M25. Respect to Sea France in that they sent us a text letting us know about some road-works on the M20 so warning us to allow some extra time to get there. In the end we got there with plenty of time to spare, which meant that we needed to sit in our “lane” and wait until the ferry arrived. There was also an added bonus that the tolls for the Dartford Crossing do not start until 6.00am, so it is free up until then. I know it was only £1.50, but since we crossed the bridge and got to the toll booths at ... read more

We get up and have breakfast at the Zimmer where we stayed. Oma and Opa are ready and the flight looks great. We took them to the airport and dropped them off at Delta’s terminal. We told them that we’re going to Tubingen. This is a village southeast of Stuttgart about 30 Km away. It has a great historical Zentrum ‘Center of Town’. It has lots of half-timber houses, the Rat House ‘Town Hall’ and a great Cathedral. Inside the cathedral are beautifully decorated tombs. We told Oma that in about an hour we’d check the flight and if they didn’t get on we’d be back to pick them up. Everyone agreed and we were off. When we arrived in Tubingen Kirsten parked and we began walking toward the center. We came around the corner of ... read more

Panorama Trinkhalle I've visit Baden Baden to have a look around and it is where I am now learning German. Baden Baden is a tourist town built around the natural hot springs. The Romans had a lot to do with the set up but it seems that the Russians have moved in now to run things. For a tourist town, you would think that you would be met with smiles and helpful people. On the contrary. When you walk the beautifully kept streets and view the magnificent old architecture, you'll feel a coldness. And it has nothing to do with the weather. There are many people walking the streets wearing their fur hats and coats and stone cold expressions. Just today I watched a tourist couple asking people for directions on the map they were carrying. ... read more

i spent the last 2 days staying in Baden-Baden. a resort type town by the black forest region. i went to a thermal bath, which was very relaxing, though expensive. then i walked around the city and went to a "natural" type zoo on the outskirts, though did not see too many animals. then i went to see the baden-baden philharmonic orchestra, which was nice. Then i took a train to Stutgart, and went to the Mercedes Benz museum there. It had 8 floors of cars on display taking you through the centuries of MB. In the evening i went on to Floersheim, a little town between frankfurt and mainz, with a very local hostel. the owner just bought the place from the old owners (one of the german men drinking next to me) and is ... read more

Today we left France to visit the Black Forest of Western Germany. Germany was much more beautiful than France and the hotel and restaurant we toured was very nice. We received a tour of the hotel, which managed to blend the local atmosphere with a modern twist. The hotel had many of the same features the other hotels we had visited possessed, but it also had a kids play center and even provided cooking classes for its guests. The tour of the restaurant was interesting as it showed the back of the house of the #1 restaurant in Germany. The restaurant has on 12 tables, and a chef for each of those tables. The service I received in the restaurant was hard to compare to what I received in Switzerland and France. Comparably it blew most ... read more

There´s a quote in the center of Baden Baden by Bill Clinton that reads, "Baden-Baden is so nice, you have to say it twice." Its a cute quote, but it doesnt quite convey just how "nice" it is here. Let me explain why this place should be re-named: Baden-baden-baden-baden. First of all, why did we decided to bike out of our way to Baden-baden? Well, of course, after viewing Rick Steves Travel Show in which he raved about Baden-baden´s Roman-Irish bath house spa. And since this city inspired writers like Mark Twain and Dostoevsky, we had high expectations for this city. We were not dissapointed. Here is why: A Long Awaited Change of Scenery Before we arrived in Baden-baden, morale was low after a few rainy nights and few deep inhalations of industrial fumes. We were ... read more

If there were a place that I can be stranded for few days during this trip, I wold pick Baden-Baden with no second thoughts. I love its elegant streets with unique boutique shops (perfect for window shopping). It has a very classy building, Kurhaus, that housed its famous casino. The building was inspired by Palace of Versailles. Its interior decor is also very elegant, quite different from those neon lights in Vegas. Trinkhalle has a long entrance hall decorated with nymphs and romantic legends about the Black Forest. This is where we sampled Baden-Baden's rich mineral water. Oh, boy, it was warm and it tasted "funny". What I love most about Baden-Baden is the abundance of hiking/running/walking trails. We took a "mini Black Forest" hike to the Altes Schloss (old castle). Initially, the hike was quite ... read more

June 20, 21, 2008 Black Forest Region, Germany The drive from Dijon, France to Baden-Baden, Germany is a few hours of more varied scenery as you travel from farmland into a more rolling hills and forested area. We were pleasantly surprised with Baden-Baden. This is a very nice, very clean, small city with a very tourist friendly city center with limited vehicle traffic and lots of good restaurants. Nice place to take a break after Paris. Baden-Baden is at the top end of the Black Forest Region of western Germany and a favorite stop for tourists exploring the region. We had a short stay here enjoyed a good time in a very nice city. Saturday morning we “hit the road” for Bern, Switzerland. We took a small detour through Stuttgart, Germany and down through the Black ... read more
