Hello everyone! Greetings from sunny Tenerife. Today's Tuesday 13th November so I've now been here just exactly 2 weeks. I've managed to implement some of my intentions drawn up prior to coming out here but the cycling's been an early casualty of a collision ( not literally! ) with reality in that the terrain is rather hillier than I remebered it, it's hotter than I was expecting and the roads are too narrow for comfort, especially when occupied by the buses. I've found the local sports centre and signed up for a month's membership so's I can use the gym but it also has a variety of other ameneties such as a spinning suite ( for those of you ignorant of such things, as I was until I went to the push - bike show at ... read more

Our first Euro-roadtrip! We rented a VW station wagon, loaded up the little monkeys, and hit the road! We did pretty well, only taking about 1/2 the trip to figure out the Swiss roadsigns...Amazingly, in about 3 hours, (and two emergency pitstops so Abigail could hurl in the ditch...our poor little car sick kid) we were nestled in the breathtaking Black Forest. We stayed in a small town outside of Baden Baden, named "Bad Herrenalb". The area is known for its wellness spas and thermal baths. Nate and I agreed that the area made us both a little homesick for northern Wisconsin...it has a very similar feel (but amped up x10)..great people, great food and beautiful surroundings. Nate was lovin' the auto bahn as we day tripped to the old walled city of Rothenburg, Germany. I ... read more

What a beautiful little place in south west Germany. We are staying in the hotel where the English Soccer Team stayed during their World Cup Campaign - the hotel is beautiful! Scenic area on The Rhine. Went for a day trip to Heidleberg where it rained but we found a great pub. We then ventured upwards to the castle area which were old ruins of a thirteenth century castle - again, very picturesque! I feel like I have used this word so many times but there is nothing that can capture the reality of it all........ Back to Holland tomorrow, and then home to Perth and reality in less than two weeks........ read more

Today Drea and I visited the spa resort town of Baden Baden, near the Schwartzwald (Black Forest). We indulged ourselves in the full treatment at the famous Friedrichsbad, also known as the Roman-Irish Baths. Let me just say there's nothing legal you can do for 29€ that feels so good, and possibly nothing illegal either. The spa treatment consists of 16 steps, all helpfully outlined on large numbered signs in German, French and English. Squeamish Americans beware: all 16 are performed completely naked (two days a week, the mixed-gender pools are closed off for women only, but this was not one of those days). Step 1 is a soapy shower, followed by steps 2 and 3, increasingly extremely hot dry sauna rooms. I'm guessing this is to get rid of impurities. After a quick rinse (step ... read more

So mom & dad got here Friday morning, and we made it back to Cambridge after lunch time since the train we were on was stopped for an hour because of a few snow flakes (the british deal with snow about as well as NC does). I gave them a brief tour of Cambridge in the snow before they came back and crashed. Saturday and Sunday we spent in London seeing all the big sights (Tower of London, Thames, Globe Theatre, Buckingham, Westminster, Parliment House, Big Ben, St Pauls, etc). Monday morning we had an early flight into Frankfurt, and got to the train station to find out that the 5am National Rail train we were going to take to the airport was cancelled. We ended up taking a train towards London, past Stansted, and then ... read more
