Our 77-day odyssey is rapidly coming to a close, as we begin to prepare for our return to the states in a couple days. We'll probably maintain a low profile in our little garden cottage until then, while packing our suitcases for the last time on this trip, and attending to other sundry tasks in preparation for our departure on Thursday. Our taxi driver will meet us here at 6:00 AM for the ride to the Charles de Gaulle airport outside Paris. We'll fly via Aer Lingus to Dublin; then connect with a transatlantic Aer Lingus flight to Orlando, where we're scheduled to arrive around 6:30 PM local time. Yesterday we enjoyed a visit from our charming French friend, Sophie Lamarre, who lives in Tours, a city in the châteaux region of the Loire River valley. ... read more

I got up at 6am for another early start this morning, following a good nights sleep. More improvements on the health situation. I’m still coughing, but better overall! Until I hit the breakfast area; it was so hot in there, no fresh air, I came over really sickly. I couldn’t even manage my breakfast, or a coffee!!! Which is unheard of!!! I decided I couldn’t eat at that time, so made myself a sandwich, and decided on drinking water. I went outside for fresh air, and definitely felt better for it! I made the decision to go early to the coach, allowing me to stand in the fresh air, rather than struggle in the sickly heat for breakfast. Au revoir Paris! We set off at around 7:30ish… I think! We made good time to get through ... read more

13/6//23 l’isle sur la sorgue Woken in the middle of the night by a massive crack of thunder which was followed by heavy rain. And when you are sleeping in a motorhome you hear all the drops as they land on the roof I can promise you. Must have soothed us to sleep again as it was a bit later than normal when we woke. Had decided that lovely though Avignon is we didn’t want to do another city day, especially after getting a bit overheated yesterday. So we set out for L'isle sur la Sorgue, a pretty town about 20 miles due East. The traffic getting across Avignon is pretty horrendous but we made it safely out the other side and once clear of the city had a pleasant drive. We have been to L’isle ... read more

I’m so pleased to say, I am feeling much improvement today. Day 5 of the doxycycline is finally kicking in! Hopefully, it’s a better day ahead! Today is a free day around Paris. I’ve been anticipating this day for a while, so I really want to be able to take it all in, and enjoy it! Breakfast went down so much better today, it’s all adding to relief I feel. I’m fed up with myself for feeling so crap… inwards and upwards, I can see it coming now. Today I am joining about half of the group for a full day of exploration in Paris! The Paris excursion showcases the iconic sights and a few of the experiences this city is famous for including the Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées, Opéra Garnier and more! After a photographic ... read more

Glorious blue sky as we set out in Smart Car for Avignon. Just across the bridge over the Rhone but think we went a slightly long way round as the traffic signage is not at its best round here. Avignon is completely walled and the traffic round the outer wall is Mad. There are mainly only 2 lanes to the road, one each way but every now and then there is room for a 3rd so they squeeze in a bus lane. Which does no good at all as 5 metres later that lane ends and the buses squash back into the lane with the normal traffic then stop at the bus stop ! Not helped by multiple crossings on lights so it is stop start all the way and yes we did witness one prang ... read more

This morning, it’s time to travel from London to Paris. Cross the English Channel and travel through to the French capital. It was an early start, 5:45 alarm. Still not sleeping great due to the constant coughing! But I still think it was an improvement on the previous nights efforts to sleep. So I feel that I’m heading in the right direction. The breakfast area was already buzzing when I arrived. I feel like I should start the day with a hearty breakfast, but my stomach isn’t feeling the same. I decided on the granola, fruit and yoghurt with a fresh orange juice. I considered that the bad bacteria will help the good bacteria with my sickly feeling today! I sat on my own to eat, there are so many people in the restaurant, and I ... read more

Got on the way as early as we could as had a long drive, 250 miles down to Avignon. Not a long way in a car but it is in a 3.5 ton motorhome with a little car in tow. And especially when there are quite a few mountains on the way to be driven round, over and under. Tomtom was instructed to use motorways for the first half of the drive .. to make sure we didn’t find ourselves either heading off into Switzerland without a Swiss motorway pass on either vehicle or worse, up and over a wibblt wobbly mountain pass. So motorway right to the other side of Grenoble and then at Valence we picked up the N road which runs pretty well alongside the toll road. We have a bit of a ... read more

Réunion is a tropical island twice the size of Okinawa and half the size of Kangaroo Island in the Indian Ocean. The 210 kilometre coastline hugs 2 volcanoes, one active and one dormant, with 3 glorious collapsed caldera known here as Cirques (circuses). We are here to visit a friend and colleague from Okinawa. Not just visiting for the volcanoes! French is the official language spoken here, but the locals speak Creole. Months of study before arriving, is helping bridge the gap, because many people don’t speak English. Total immersion in the language, plus daily conversation with our host helps. I can talk about food, hiking and volcanic activity in faltering French. I cannot understand Creole! The first week has been busy, visiting markets, hiking and flying over the island. The range of food here is ... read more

The forecast rain did indeed land in the night. Loud on the ‘tin’ roof for an hour or so but no thunder or wind so we were safe tucked away in our little home on wheels and Bob slept through 😊. First job of the day was for Bob to sort out the Smart Car lights as he had noticed the driver’s side back light was out. A good hour later with the back end of the car dismantled and a new bulb in place it still didn’t work. Handbook out and more tools out of the ever handy toolbox and Bob found and replaced a dodgy fuse and the light came on again. Can Bob fix it ? Course he can 😊 By this time all the rain had gone and the sky was turning ... read more

The weather in Paris has gradually become warmer during our stay, with the high temperature climbing to 87 degrees Fahrenheit today. We definitely felt the difference as we walked around in the afternoon, but it was tolerable in the shade with the help of some cool breezes. We decided to take a river cruise on the Seine, an experience we have enjoyed on several occasions in the past (most recently with our granddaughter Ashley back in 2017). In order to save some wear and tear on Dee, we opted for a taxi ride from our cottage in Malakoff to the Pont Neuf, a bridge that spans the river Seine, at the western end of the Île de la Cité, in the center of Paris. The Vedettes du Pont Neuf, a company that offers one-hour river cruises, ... read more
