It was great to catch up with our friends, Sue and Paul in Calella, share a meal and listen to Spanish music with Flamenco dancing. Surprisingly they were the first UK residents we had spoken to in 4 weeks so we had a lot to say! We camped a little way along the coast from our friends, in a delightful campsite. So much better than our last, with a great welcome from the staff, the guy who showed us to our pitch was a dead ringer for David Hasselhoff. The tents, caravan’s, motorhomes with their respective paraphernalia, washing lines, blow up lilos, etc, did give it a cramped feeling-but I suppose it was the peak of the summer holidays. The facilities though were top notch. Apart from swimming pool, kiddy pool it also had a separate ... read more

The road from Lisieux to Quillebeuf took me through a fertile agricultural landscape where harvesting was well underway. There were several climbs to plateaus where the road continued level before descending, only to soon climb the next plateau. The landscape is not as wild as The Sperrins or Bluestacks. I wonder what the Eatls thought of it. Just before the final descent onto the flood plain of the Seine I stopped by a field of some luxuriant purple flowered crop. I'd no idea what it was, but the butterflies were loving it. I stopped to take a few photos. There were occasional small vernacular houses and barns along the little country road near the river. Long rectangular buildings with thatched roofs topped with a ridge of living turf. No doubt the design has changed little in ... read more

I have no idea when I first heard about The Flight of the Earls. It is one of those historical events that you can't avoid hearing something about if you live in Ireland. Be it in a song or someone talking about Irish history in an educational setting, or a documentary or in the pub. When I started working in Donegal I became more aware of it. A flurry of commemoration about the event occurred during the 400th anniversary in 2007 including books, commemorative stamps and a sculpture installed at their departure point on the outskirts of Rathmullan on the shores of Lough Swilly. The Earls sailed off in a French ship with a retinue totalling 99 people in September 1607 intending to reach Spain. The weather initially and subsequently political events, meant they never got ... read more

We took an Uber to the Gere Lyon train station in Paris to catch an 11:15 train to Nice. It was, of course, delayed. When it was finally called, there was a crowded mad dash to get to the track and into the train. The trip should have been 5+ hours but it was over 7. At one point there was a long delay because another train had hit an animal on the track??.At first we kept busy with sleeping and doing things on our tablets or phones but it dragged on. The highlight was the great picnic lunch we had brought along. And the French countryside was pretty. When we got closer to our destination the views of the beautiful blue water of the French Riviera helped. We arrived in Nice and eventually got the ... read more

The run up to this vacation was stressful. Fraught with the habitual tensions of trying to do too much before leaving. The return was even more stressful; full of flight delays and cancellations which had me familiarise myself with Paris Charles de Gaulle more than my own office. I’m not sure that five days away was worth the stress however I will say that Corsica is the beauty that I thought it would be. So close geographically to Sardinia; its beauty is truly in its azure blue water beaches, rugged landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. The interior of Corsica c’est sauvage, c’est beau. My linguistic fluency came into its own and I made friends from mainland France too. Of course any notion of my gluten-free, sugar-free, un-caffeinated diet went astray with my daily dose of several freshly ... read more

We've been busy these past 2 days in Paris taking the metro, ubering and of course walking a lot. We've had delicious meals and snacks and a few drinks. Paris is a beautiful city, with very crowded streets and roads. People we've met, especially asked questions of, were very friendly. Cafes seem always busy and people are sitting in them taking their time and enjoying. Terry and I had a plan for our time. While we wanted to relax and take it slow, the draw of things that Rick Steves said we should see, was strong. We had museum reservations each morning. On Wednesday it was the Orsay where we had a date with Rick and the Impressionists. It was beautiful...just seeing the highlights we spent a couple of hours with Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh. ... read more

Taking a break from talking about what I've seen and done to what I've eaten. With great cheeses and bread, how can you go wrong? Best meal so far...Pain Vin Fromage...a fondue restaurant in the Marias neighborhood : a beautiful cellar like setting with 2 different fondues, bread and potatoes...it was delicious and Kir Royal to wash it down. It was an adventure getting there with clogged roads that caused our Uber driver to tell us to get out and walk, while the others were traveling without wifi to get there. Fortunately the restaurant seated us even though we were an hour late and the meal was totally worth it. Tea in Cafe Lavierve was pretty yummy too. It was in an article in the New York Times '36 Hours in Paris' so Roberta wanted to ... read more

On a pretty last minute spontaneous decision I'm traveling to Paris and Nice with Terry, Roberta, Cheryl, and Naomi. Terry was feeling the need to take a trip this summer and as long as we found a good deal, I was in. After some time looking at Nova Scotia, we heard about the wild fires and couldn't find a good deal, somehow traveling to Paris became an option. Thanks to Travel zoo, which we'll never use again, and Terry's persistent negotiating skills we got the deal we were looking for. 8 days, really 6, air fare hotels and train all for $2000. Terry and I were never in France and the others had but liked the idea of taking the trip together. France was never high on my travel list but seeing the Eiffel Tower and ... read more

OK, All those who bet I couldn't go a day without a blog update - You win! Today wasn't meant to be about sight seeing, it was about resting our legs and checking the bikes over, going to a local bike shop and for Jeff to get a SIM card. After breakfast Jeff looked up a bike shop and we headed off. Interestingly enough it was were the Velodrome was from last night. On arriving we found that Jeff had looked up the administrative offices of Roubaix Cycling. We went in for a look anyway and were blown away. The front office was packed with artefacts and photos from Paris-Roubaix races across the decades. It had souvenirs for sale AND served coffee. We spent some time looking around the place, they were happy to accommodate us ... read more
