I always fall in love with Paris each time I visit, not sure if it's the unashamedly arrogant Parisiens or the romantic vibe, whatever, I always discover new gems...Like the retaurant, Kong, which is located by the Seine on top of the Kenzo building, I think the nearest tube stop is the Louvre. The decor is fabulous, the clientele look like they've just stepped out of the latest edition of Vogue. The food not so great but it's not really about the food! I also discovered the tinest Japanese restuarant five minutes walk from l'Opera, gorgeous food. Thank you to the nice Japanese lady who gave me those great stickers. Enjoy the pictures!... read more

what can i say - it's great!!! had a lovely day yesterday. i got sunburt - in france!!!!!!!!!!! it was a gorgeous day and i had lunch for about 2 hours sitting in the garden in front in the sacre coeur - a gorgeous white church that i could see from my hostel window!! it's up on a hill that's the same height as the second level of the eiffel tower so i had a gorgeous view of the city as well. everything was gorgeous!!!!!!!! that's pretty much all i did during the day. i moved hostels to one down the road because i thought it was cheaper but they ended up being the same. the one i'm in now has a kitchen so i'm going to cook my own dinner tonight for the first time ... read more

two updates in one day - lucky you!! had another good day today. got to musee d'orsay eventually. i walked from the hostel - about a one hour walk through some beautiful quaint areas in the back streets of paris. had my packed lunch by the river seine - watched some 10 year old boys fishing. don't quite know why they were there at lunch time on a tuesday but never mind. at musee d'orsay the queue was massive but i got in in abt 10 mins! it was pretty good. i like the impressionists stuff and there was a whole level of monet, van gogh, pissarro, manet and degas. i'd seen quite a few of them when they were in melbourne but it was good to see them again. i then made my way over ... read more

It’s written on the Metro car walls; it’s written on the street signs; it’s written on the tombs at Pere Lachaise Cemetery. “L’individu qui pense contre la sociéte qui dort, voilá l’histoire éternelle et le printemps aura toujours le meme hiver à vaincre.” This from a Metro car wall, not signed by the poet, or did he plagiarize it from someone else? I am easily fooled, as I have never seen this thought before. My raw translation: “For he who thinks poorly of a sleeping society—consider the eternal story of spring always having the same winter to overcome.” I walk the streets of Paris; I walk everywhere. As I walk I roll the Paris street names off my tongue. I love the sound of the street names. My French is good enough to pronounce them correctly. ... read more

We first visit a French perfumery before entering Italy. We see the Leaning Tower of Pisa before we reach this most spectacular of Renaissance cities, Florence. Was so tired when I woke up this morning, which was interesting as last night was probably the least I've had to drink on tour. Had French toast for breakfast, cereal, yoghurt and fruit. Left at 8 and stopped at a French perfumery at Eze, between Monaco and Nice. Had a tour where of the factory where they handmake everything, including the packaging. Saw the leaning tower of Pisa! Was a long driving day, stopped at an autogrill and had my first Italian pizza. Stopped at Pisa in the afternoon, the tower looks just like it does in pictures. Arrived at the campsite in the afternoon, and the reps ... read more

It's your choice today - perhaps mix with the rich and famous on the beach at Cannes or take a trip into Nice for some souvenir shopping and explore this area. At night, we go to Monte Carlo to see the Royal Palace and visit a casino. Woke up feeling surprisingly well, considering the amount and mix of alcohol I'd consumed. Everyone bailed on going to Cannes, so Melissa and I caught the train there with Lisa, Kristy and George. Canne is an amazingly beautiful town, and I'm so glad I went. It's quite small, with narrow streets lined with designer shops - Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc. We walked to 'Palais De Festival', where the canne film festival is held. They're rennovating it at the moment, so there was lots of scaffoldind and work going ... read more

“AM I INSANE?” That’s what I asked myself shortly after arriving in Paris. I was tired; exhausted to the bone is a better way to put it—drained. I had not slept for 24 hours—a screaming infant across the aisle from me on the eight-hour plus flight helped in that regard. I was questioning my own sanity for leaving a beautiful, loving wife, the soon to appear fresh greenery of a Michigan spring after a horrid winter plus all the comforts of home just to feel like loose gravel raked over a dozen times into a road bed. Really, dear reader, I felt that out of it. To regain mental acuity and reset circadian rhythms, I needed to stay up until a normal Paris bedtime, and then go to sleep. NWA had deposited me at Charles de ... read more

Bob and I went up to Mom and Dad's a few weeks ago and spent numerous hours looking at places to rent. Our criteria was 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, not too many stairs and near or in a village. Bob and I are flying United First Class Suite which is quite deluxe. http://www.unitedairlines.be/press/pressroom/2001/uk_0807.html for free with our miles - finally. In order to get First Class though we had to fly first into London. We went to Expedia and checked the retail value of our flight and found that it was $30,000 each!!
