So I finally made it to the continent! Went to France for the first time on Saturday night. All I can say is, France would be lovely if it wasnt full of French people! Our 5-a-side footy tournament has finished and some of us decided to have a weekend away to finish off. So Ben, Jon, Tony (AUS), Trevor (IRE), Dan and I (NZ) all decided we would go on a Eurostar overnight fare to France. Paris was booked, so Lille, in the north, was to be our target. We decided that as it was only an overnighter, we wouldn’t get accommodation and just party all night in the clubs, easy. So we boarded the Eurostar in high spirits on Saturday afternoon, few beers and a pack of cards for the trip, great time. Arrived in ... read more

Traveled from Paris, Gar du Nord train station, to Lille France, and then on to Brugge, Belgium. Spent three or four days in and around Brugge (Bruges for some). The town was pickled in time by a set of economic catastrophes. The river silted up, sheep’s wool couldn’t be moved to the market, and the bankers left town. Not much modern about this town. The days were so cold and I spent a good deal of time out of doors (8 to 10 hours per day), I built up an immunity to the cold, so you may now better understand why I’ll never complain about a Chicago winter (or summer for that matter). The town was dead so I was happy to be moving on to Calais, France to catch the ferry to Dover (see last ... read more

Hey! Well, it's been awhile since I last updated, and another couple of weeks have blurred by. Snow hit the city hard last weekend, and even though the skies are blue now, the temprature is -2 to -6 degrees C. Power went out at the school on monday, so students were locked out for the rest of the week while they fixed electricity stuff. For me this ment a very long week of wandering, museums, doodling, and avoiding being outside in the frozen city as much as possibile. Highlights were the Rodin sculpture museum, the Marais and Bastielle areas at night, and a swingin underground jazz club with new american friends Today we've been let back into the building, so I'm trying to get as much animation done today before catching a flight to Ireland tomorrow! ... read more

In late January I bought Vanessa an early birthday present - rollerblades. I bought some for myself too so we can go out and skate around Paris. They are pretty good ones so we should be able to use them when we get home (down at Mission Bay and at Lake Murray). Anyway, we bought them now since every Friday night they have a group skate through the streets of Paris with thousands of people. Vanessa has been using them as much as she can - except for when it is too cold / wet outside. Speaking of which, we were hit with a major cold streak for about a month. It was in the 20’s and 30’s (with wind-chill making it feel like 10). It actually snowed several times and even stuck to the ground ... read more

I was in and around Paris for just over two weeks. I don’t have the luxury of referring to my travel diary so rather than doing a day by day recap I’ll build my blogs up around sites visited. I was in the city long enough that I became very familiar with the subway system and the location of the central neighborhoods. While in Paris I saw a performance at the Grand Opera House, walked around the city in snow, toured a half dozen gothic chapels/cathedrals, and the typical tourist stops (museums, tours, etc…). I ended up at the Eiffel tower on nearly a daily basis (typically at night). I look forward to returning to Paris. I hope that it’s sooner rather than later. What is your favorite Parisian experience? I'll leave my writing to this ... read more

Grand Opera Feb 24, 2005 To see a performance at the Paris Opera House should be high on anyone’s list of must sees when in Paris. This is one of the few events that I remember the actual date that I was there (birthday). All other dates for attractions and towns are close approximates (typically within two or three days) no further than a week off at the very worst. All I can say is wow, stunning, incredible. While the seat was nothing to write home about the whole cultural experience was one that I’ll never forget. I hope to return to the opera house again in the future. My suggestion to you is prebook tickets if you really want to go. You won’t regret it even if the performance is a yawn. Oh yes, this ... read more

Villa Savoye By Le Corbusier, 1929 Typical tourists are lucky just to see the most recognizable sites in a major city. I’m never just satisfied with the easy and convenient sites. I’m known for going to out of the way places by difficult and inconvenient means just to satisfy a hankering. I’m a sucker for architecture the good, bad and the plain ugly. If I’ve read an article on a place, seen a photo of a structure, or been told that I must/mustn’t see an architect’s work I’ll be very tempted to cross sea and climb mountains to reach it just to say I’ve been there. Today I visited one of the most recognizable works of the International Style, Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye. This little voyage was probably the second most difficult trek I’ve made to ... read more
