Dinsdag 31/8/2021 Avignon.

We made three trips to France in 2018/2019 before moving on to Hawaii. We combined the photos, and this blog is mostly Provence (south of France) and the next one will be Provence to Paris and back to Switzerland. As I said before, I love driving small backroads - the curvier, the better. And there are quite a few curvy roads in France. We try to get a small car, so Pete can usually, easily turn around and we can get that perfect shot. Besides beautiful scenery and great food, there’s a lot of Roman history in Provence. Since one of my majors at the University of Washington was Greek and Roman History, I’ve always been fascinated by this area. Provence was actually a “province” of Rome, so there are several aqueducts, theaters, arches and other ... read more

Much like other sports, this year's Tour de France has been postponed from June to August 29, 2020, through September 20. And needless to say, it is the premier cycling event of the year, eclipsing even Olympic year cycling events. And for many years, I had absolutely zero interest in the race, due to doping and various forms of cheating. Now that I am a semi-serious cyclist, and the sport is a bit cleaner, I have become a fan. I record every stage, watch them religiously, as only a cyclist would and can do, particularly during the pandemic. I do envy the stamina of the riders, though I would never subject myself to that abuse. This year's race will be 2,156 miles, or 3,470 kilometers. Just for comparison, I try to ride between 25 and 30 ... read more

Tag 6 – So, 15.3. Am liebsten hätte ... read more

Good morning world! This is a weird entry to write. It didn't happen the last century, but it did happen in another era...the one where travel was still safe! Tanya and I had both to travel for business....so we decided to extent our trip by a little week of holidays. Flights were booked to and from Nice...and the plan was to go to the right for a romantic week in Italy....Venice and la Scala were waiting for us! Well, Italy never happened. it was the very first few days of the Coronavirus in Europe....but we would simply not take the risk and cross the border. At the time, there were less than 20 cases in a region of over 10 millions inhabitants, I name Provence-Cote d'Azur. That would change days after we were back home! So ... read more

From Montreux, it is a lovely voyage through the rolling hills, quaint little villages, embraced by the Seine river, and majestic Swiss Alps. There is a castle built in a diagonal line to correspond with the striated rock upon which it is built. Arriving into Aix-en-Provence in the Cote d’azur region (french riviera) we are given bad news at the train station. Because of the storms that have struck southern France, the railway tracks are under construction. We are stuck! No way out other than bus, car, or plane. Will have some decisions to make. Since Provence is known for their lavender, the accommodation we have booked is called The Lavender Apartment, with walls being painted this same hue. Looking out the living room window, there is a French soldier bearing an automatic weapon, and patrolling ... read more

Time to leave our lovely Nice. The holiday within the holiday. The tram system has made a huge difference to the city...very efficient with one arriving every three minutes. Jean Medecin with it's beautiful shops with beautiful prices (way too much for us)! Fantastic beaches, charm of the oldtown history, flowers, fruit & veg markets, easy access & frequency to the outer regions by bus or train.....Antibes, Cannes, Biot, Cagnes sur Mer, Grasse, St Paul du Vence, Vence, Entrevaux, Villefranche, Saint Jean cap Ferrat, Beaulieu, Monaco, and Menton on the Ventimigllia border to Italy. Tram to the airport...still no hold luggage so straight to Departure Security with our online boarding passes. Moving the whole time between EU countries, so no checks on arrival, just as you depart. Cuts at least 2 hours off the trip & ... read more
