The second half of the river tour was equally fun. On Monday morning, I took the “wine and chocolate” tour and John and Janet took the “hiking and wine tasting” tour. For wine and chocolate, we walked down to the local palace and went into the wine cellar of the church. We had two guides, a sommelier and a chocolatier. The sommelier selected one white and two red wines and then the chocolatier invented a chocolate to go with each wine. They were wonderful and even I could tell how much better both the wine and the chocolate tasted when eaten together. For the hike and wine tasting, John and Janet joined the group which walked across the bridge toward a region titled The Hermitage. After strolling among the vineyards, they headed for a winery called ... read more

The next phase of our trip was a river cruise on the Rhone River in Provence, France. We were on the Ama Kristina which is one of the ships on Ama Waterways line. We started in Avignon and will finish in Lyon, north of here by about 150 miles. There are twelve locks along this section of the river and that was the major design constraint to the Ama Kristina…it was designed to have eleven inches on either side when it went through the locks along the river. Needless to say, it is a tight fit. The top deck is called the Sun Deck but it is too cold to be out there much. Besides the sundeck, the bow has two passenger levels, the lounge, and the dining room. The midships has three levels of passenger ... read more

I said this was a Fancy Schmancy trip and that fanciness started with flying business class. I really liked sitting in business class. Business class was a two three two configuration. John and I were facing each other with him facing forward and me facing backwards. Instead of a seat, we each had our own pod. They were very comfortable, and we could lay flat or sit up. We were handed champagne as we boarded and a kit containing socks, face mask, ear plugs and assorted toiletries. After takeoff, they served us dinner and drinks. Then about 730, I lay down (flat) to fall asleep. I pretty much slept five hours until they started getting ready for landing. Navigating Heathrow took about 90 minutes because we walked, took a train and a bus and had to ... read more

Moustiers turned out to be a pretty village clinging to the side of a tall limestone cliff. A rushing stream runs right through the middle of the village, dividing it into two parts that are joined by two or three bridges. Above there are two tokens of religious fervour: a chapel perched on a rock perhaps 100 m above the village, and a gold metal star hung from a chain that spans the gap the stream has carved in the cliffside! I climbed up to the chapel, just because I wasn't already tired enough after 66 km of riding. The next day we embarked on the challenge of the Gorges du Verdon. The ride actually started with a long descent from Moustiers to the point where the river emerges from the gorge, to feed a hydro ... read more

Avignon is our home base for this part of Provence. Avignon is located in Southeastern France. It is located on the left bank of the Rhone river. Between 1309 and 1377 the center of the Catholic Church was here and home to seven consecutive Popes. In 1348 Pope Clement VI bought Avignon from Joanne I of Napes. The church controlled the town until 1791 when during the French Revolution it became part of France. Avignon is one of the few cities in France to have preserved its city walls. The wall is about 2.7 miles around. It takes about 20 minutes to walk straight across the city. The streets are cobblestone so you have to be careful walking. This is a living city with schools and shops of every kind. Avignon Les Halles An indoor shopping area ... read more

Walk along the Red cliffs of Dramont Set against the natural backdrop consisting of the Esterel mountain range, Saint Raphael on the French Riviera is a well known seaside holiday resort, halfway between Cannes and Saint-Tropez. With 36 kilometres of coastline stretching from the Alpes-Maritimes through the Gold Coast (Corniche d’Or). Saint-Raphael has over 28 different beaches : sandy beaches, pebble beaches, creeks and rocky inlets. So today was My first tour with Heygo guide Eniko, what a beautiful walk following the rocky paths along the coastline & into the forest. The views were stunning & the intense red cliffs against the beautiful blue Mediterranean and the green pine trees was breathtaking A less happy memory for this part of Saint-Raphael is the landing of the allied troops during the Second World War on the Dramont ... read more

Today we drive to Arles 56 minutes by car from Avignon. Arles was once a Roman city and the old town has narrow streets and is know as a place Vincent Van Gogh lived and worked. We park near a large outdoor market. Mark buys a hat and I buy some handmade soap. We buy a museum pass and visit the Les Arenes (colosseum). The colosseum holds 12,000 spectators. We are not able to enter the colosseum because it is being used for a girls volleyball tournament. We visit the St-Trophime Romanesque church. They have the largest collection of Saint’s bones I have ever seen. We visit every open church we pass when traveling because the church funded artist’s work and beautiful paintings, statues and tapestries can be found in churches. We also visit the Saint ... read more

Aix is an hour drive from Avignon. We visit the Musee Granet named after famous local painter Francois Marius Granet. The museum houses a collection of French painters from 16th century on. We get an audio guide and enjoy art by Picasso (of course his art is everywhere). They have a self portrait by Rembrandt (he is Dutch, how did he get in this museum)? They have more than ten Cezanne masterpieces and work by Renoir and Van Gogh. After lunch we visit Fondation Vasarely. This is a modern art museum. I am not a modern art fan but I still joy visiting modern art museums. Modern art is often very colorful. Aix is a old Roman city with narrow cobblestone streets. The old city has blockades to keep the cars out. The city is known ... read more

After crossing the Rhone - and stopping in Chateauneuf du Pape for a delicious lunch accompanied by a glass of the famous red wine - we had a day climbing though another spectacular gorge. I think the authors of the guide we're following have a passion for river gorges! Unlike the gorge of the Ardèche, where we were riding along the edge between the plateau and the valley for most of the time, in the gorge of the Nesque we climbed steadily from the valley bottom (at the upper end of the gorge) to the lip of the gorge, just before the valley broadened out at the downstream end. (Hope that's not too confusing!) At that high point there was a magnificent view across the gorge at a huge, monolithic spur of rock. We ended the ... read more
