Today we drive to a cute village called Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Humans have occupied the area since Neolithic era. Only about 500 people live here now. The village is on the River Sorgue. The river is fed by water that comes out of an underground spring at the feet of a steep cliff. This is the biggest spring in France and the fifth largest spring in the world. The water is clean and cool. A robot went to the bottom of the spring to 1010 feet. In 1946 Jacques Cousteau was almost killed while searching for the bottom of the spring. An air compressor used to fill his tank had taken in its own exhaust fumes and produced carbon monoxide nearly killing him before he could reach the surface. Cousteau went down 328 feet but did not find ... read more

We are in Paris, instead of going to Avignon where we are staying we take the train from Paris to Nice. We are hoping to find our stolen bag. We checked the hours of the lost and found at the Nice Ville station. The lost and found is open all day every day. After six hours on the train we get to Nice. The doors to the lost and found were locked and they had a sign stating closed for exceptional reasons. Damn, all that way for nothing. We find a restaurant nearby have lunch then catch the next train to Avignon. We arrive in Avignon and take a taxi to our Airbnb. The apartment is nice, a one bedroom and one bath with balconies on both sides of the unit. We are in the old ... read more

We are headed to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to hike on a 4.8 km trail. We take the number 2 tram to Nice Port. We walk a few blocks and take the number 15 bus to Sain’t-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. It is sprinkling when we arrive so we find a outdoor restaurant with large umbrellas. We have fish and chips which seems appropriate since we are at a port. After lunch we follow a group of people who look like they are out for a hike. We find the trail a short distance from the port. The trail is well posted with signs and maps along the way. The trail is famous for passing by some of the most expensive villas in the world. The walk is gentle with some small uphills and downhills. They advertise that if you are afraid of ... read more

It is our last day in Nice. We pack and we decide to head to Parc Phoenix. We have passed the Parc several times and decide it would be a nice easy thing to do on our last day. It is a Parc with different gardens located in a large hot house. There are also outdoor gardens with many different kinds of plants that I have never seen before. They also have various fish and some animals like miniature horses, goats,, lemurs, ovistitis (monkeys from Brazil), otters, wallabies, pigs, peacocks, alligators and unusual chickens. They have an outdoor cafe and picnic tables. It is quiet no schools groups today. Included in admission to the Parc is entrance to Asian Art Museum which is located inside Parc Phoenix. We go ahead and visit the museum since it ... read more

We leave Nice and head south to an island called Porquerolles. We take tram two then tram one to get to the train station Nice Ville. The train takes us to Toulon. In Toulon we take a train to Hyers. In Hyers we take a taxi to the port at Tour Fondue. At the port we take a ferry to Porquerolles. The island town is small, we walk to our hotel which is five rooms above a restaurant. We spend two nights here. The room is small, there are ants n the room and I wonder when the last time the hard wood floors were cleaned. I wear my flappers when in the room. All this for $250 per night. So not worth it. The town square is surrounded by restaurants and shops. We have sea ... read more

Today we head out for a day trip to Antibes. We get up at 7:20, have breakfast then head out. We take the number 2 tram and exit at Parc Phoenix. We follow the signs to the train station St Augustine about six blocks away. The round trip for Mark and I costs 5.80 euros. We get a senior discount which is nice. The train is a regional train but it is as nice as the fast train we took from Paris. We settle in on the upper level so we can watch the scenery. The trip is only a half hour. We arrive in Antibes and walk down to the port. The port s located in the old town which is cute and the architecture is very Italian. We take a break at a cafe ... read more

Today we take the number 2 tram to the Girabaldi stop. We check out the numerous cafes in the large plaza. When Mark spots fish and chips on one menu our decision is made. We both have the fish and chips and it is very good. We then catch the number 15 bus to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The bus drops us right at the entrance to the villa. The villa was built on 17 acres by Beatrice de Rothschild of the Rothschild banking and wine making family. Beatrice was a collector of paintings by the grand masters, rare rugs and rare items of furniture. She also collected porcelain and some walls are covered in tapestries. A audio guide is included in the entrance fee. Mark and I enjoy seeing the villa which is furnished in the original furniture ... read more

Zondag 12/09/2021 – Apt. Laatste dag in Apt.

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Apt September 9th 2021

We arrived in Nice by train from Paris. We took a taxi to our Airbnb. Our landlord was waiting for us. Our apartment is on the ninth floor of a building overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The unit has one bedroom, a toilet with sink room and a room with a shower and sink. The living room and kitchen face the sea and we have a balcony with a table and chairs. The first order of business is to shop at the grocery store right next to our building. We buy cereal, milk, fruit, bread, cheeses and wine. There is a boulangerie (bakery) just a few doors down where I buy chocolate and raisin croissants for breakfast. There is a long promenade all around the bay and we walk the entire length. There are two lanes just ... read more
