We had rain in the night but when we got up it was totally clear and still. A gorgeous autumnal morning with a shimmer on the lake. Away before 9.30 as another long drive especially as we were not taking the easy and fast option of the motorway but using the smaller country roads instead. Found a few interesting small towns along the way. One was not expecting a 3.5 ton motorhome to pass through and had a street market all set up. Just squeezed through. Tandy didn’t particularly like a couple of towns which had used massive speed bumps to slow the traffic down. Good thing Tandy is well constructed is all we could say as we rattled and shook up and over the humps. We drove past fields and fields full of sunflowers. Some ... read more

Europe » France » Poitou-Charentes » Cognac September 8th 2016

Reputation calls on all within earshot of an utterance of that word ‘Cognac’ to genuflect or at least bow. If I were to offer cognac as an after dinner slurp, then I might be bunging it on a bit, or maybe there is a heavy question coming. After all, I have never tasted the stuff. Well not before now. We might know the big names in cognac like Hennessy and Remy Martin from watching the likes of Roger Moore and Sean Connery. A few days back, we pulled up in the town of Cognac, expecting something like the ambience of Epernay in the Champagne country. Cognac did present a prominence, albeit muted. There was a feeling of ‘having arrived’ when we drove into the town. But it all fell a bit flat. Epernay has stately homes, ... read more

We've visited La Rochelle once before, via boat from Ile d'Oleron. This time we took the rather handy train. Only 10 minutes to Chatelaillon station by scooter and 11 minutes on the train to La Rochelle. Easy. A good decision as not a good weather day, grey and chilly. Better walking round a lovely town than braving the windy seafront. Had a lovely day and out of the wind it was a little warmer but we saw lots of people huddled up in their big coats. Very unseasonably cold. There seemed to be quite a number of Euro 2016 supporters about, especially Irish. The town was buzzing with lots of visitors, all wandering about taking in the sights the same as us. We had a picnic in the main square for lunch, courtesy of the local ... read more

Europe » France » Poitou-Charentes » Chatelaillon-Plage June 19th 2016

Decided to visit the Marais d'Yves as we had seen quite a few interesting birds of prey on our drive to the campsite. Followed the road along the coast south as best we could but not easy as they are building sea defences so part of the road was diverted. No obvious road to take and the only signs we saw to the Reseve were along the main road and as usual when we are on the scooter we try to use the nice quiet back roads. The nice quiet back road we chose took us in completely the wrong direction and well away from the coast line. We backtracked and found ourselves on a dual carriageway but only 3km from an aire which promised to take us to the Reserve. I don't know what it ... read more

We've moved further south and back to the mainland. Chose a good day to drive as raining in the morning but cleared up and sun came out once we had arrived at our campsite. Not a terribly interesting drive, very flat in the Vendee and we didn't go through any pretty villages. Just the nature of the countryside in this part of France. All the area along the coast above La Rochelle is a string of seaside towns just waiting to be filled with thousands of summer visitors. The campsites are pretty well wall to wall for miles. We headed for La Rochelle and accidentally almost went through as the turn towards Rochefort was badly signposted. Bob managed to find a roundabout to turn round just as I was attacking the food cupboard which had come ... read more

The warm sun looked like it was going to desert us today for although there were patches of blue sky the general overcast gave the impression that it was back to that mode for the day. Here we had been thinking that a change to short sleeve shirts and shorts might have been on but today is certainly a day for rugging up again. Never mind, as long as it doesn’t rain. We have been sleeping in really well and this morning was no different waking when the time was nearly 7am. So it was a relaxed breakfast as we planned our day trip to the Ile de Re, a long strip of an island separated by a 1.8km long bridge from the mainland. It is about 35km by road from the La Rochelle end of ... read more
