SUBJECT: RISE AND SHINE I couldn’t tell you why, but I awoke the other morning at just after five o’clock. And it wasn’t as though I groggily woke up, rolled over, checked the time, and became instantly annoyed at having woken up so early. I felt completely awake and ready to start the day. Rather than fight it and try to force myself to go back to sleep, I decided to roll with it. I got up, brushed my teeth, put in my contacts, got dressed, and left my apartment. It was dark outside. The only light came from the dim, yellow-orange streetlights and the green LED crosses that signify a pharmacy. Not a soul was out and about. The usually busy, bustling street on which I live was like a dark shell of itself. The ... read more

hey everyone.. I hope you enjoyed the pictures I put up a few days ago. And yes mom I know I looked very silly in my plaid pants and plaid shirt but I like them both, just not wearing them at the same time because it looks so weird haha. Anyway... Folk dancing was fun again but this time the people never explained the dances before so no one really knew how to do the dances so people just kept running into people and it just was not as good as the first time I went because that time I actually learned how to do the dancing because a lot of people knew how to do them. But I still would love to go again and hopefully learn more dances! Last night I went to the ... read more

Doc You’re Telling Me This Sucker’s Nuclear? We are now long and gone from Ireland. Our last night was spent there putting down a twelve pack of beer, 3 and a half bottles of wine and about 20-30 shots of rum, brandy, tequila, whiskey, and some coffee flavored liquor in a blaze of backstage rock and roll like glory. After a subzero sparkler dance routine in Rob’s driveway and singing, “Twist and Shout,” at the top of our lungs in his kitchen, all the while trying to keep the tacos I made for dinner down, I’d say we left the way we came in, loud and having fun. I went into a travel coma somewhere between saying goodbye to Shelly at the Dublin airport and after the 3rd stop on the Paris metro rail. We came ... read more

Hey again... So I have only been in France for a little over 2 months but time is flying by so quickly already! I'm so happy that rotary makes us switch Families. I mean in the beginning of the switch I felt like my whole exchange was starting over and in some ways it was. But then I realized that this is what the exchange is all about meeting new people and living in different cultures, and of course in different families there will be different perspectives and different things. I'm starting to realize that just because something is different than the way you are accustomed to does not make it wrong ; I'm starting to actualy understand the French way of life and starting to think about how things are actualy very similar to the ... read more

ok, i know im terrible at updating my blog. but i was on vacation in italy, and then my computer's hard drive crashed and so it had to be sent away and then i decided to shorten my stay to only a semester so i was incredibly busy dealing with all of that paperwork and whatnot, my apologies. my vacation was great. my mom arrived in lille saturday night and we went and had a nice meal out together before returning to my tiny room where we both slept! it was surprisingly comfortable, i slept on the floor and my mom got the bed and it worked out fine. on sunday we got up and went to wazemmes, the open air market. we bought hats and gloves and also some veggies for dinner that night. we ... read more

It seems like a veyr long time that I have actually wrote something in here and not just put up pictures but I know you all like this pictures =) Anyway I have switched my host familys and I think most of you know that by now. I live in the country side and it is so much like home! I ride horses with my new host sister Juliette. I just had a 10 day break from school and that was awesome! I did so many things... I went to a discothèque, went to a basketball game in Dunkerque, rode a mountain bike (that for some reason I dont understand how to use gears on bikes haha.) through a buch of the country side and ended up on a beach, freezing but still beautiful, ... read more

After a day, I’m not sure four days here will be too long. The people have been amazing so far. There’s a huge language barrier, I didn’t realize Gaspard wasn’t fluent in English. We went to hang out with some of his friends last night who thought it would be fun to speak English all night, mostly for my benefit, but I think people like to show off their multi-linguality. Today I wandered around myself, and went to Vieux Lille. I passed a friterie, which, if you know my favorite food, you know how excited I was. Gaspard tells me that in Lille, they cook fries in the Belgium style. They heat them through first, and then, when someone orders them, they cook them a second time in the frier to crisp them. Really the best ... read more

i finally have new photos up! ahh I have so much to say and so little time to explain it all. I switched host families which has been really different but good experiance for me already. Im living in a small country town and it is really beautiful. It reminds me a lot of home! I was getting really at home at my first host family and switching made me appreciate all the things they have done for me. I will switch back with them for Christmas though! which is really cool. My new host family is very nice as well. I have two host brothers and one host sister. One of the brothers is older and works in Paris so he isn't here that often. the little host brother reminds me a lot of what ... read more
