SUBJECT: CROIX, PETITE VILLE CHARMANTE Let’s take a walk. I leave my school, Anatole France, and pass the old façade of the Victor Provo Hospital. A long, brick, gate-like structure with five arched gates, of which the center arch is the tallest and widest. Above it is written: “Centre médicale Victor Provo” or something of the like in golden capital letters. It is a pleasingly symmetrical gate that hides the more modern, dismal structure that contains the hospital itself, which is a depressing combination of lifeless blues and concrete grays. Anyway, I’m not going to the hospital. Instead, I come upon the hospital gate and turn away, heading down the street toward the tram tracks. The tram is an interesting place. At this particular stop, there are often loads of high school students hopping on and ... read more

Living with Cindy! Everything is soo much fun! It's crazy how fast the time goes though... I've been doing lots of things and it's always things that I would be doing with my friends back home and i'm just so glad to have a really good French friend. I enjoy having someone to not now how to decide what to color to chose from within the huge pile of nail polish, or someone to make "American" cookies for, or someone to be totally freaked out by the "Sea monkeys" (that are literally a growing piece of the U.S! haha) or someone to have parties with, or someone to show me truly what the French teenage life is all about. I really enjoy my new host mom as well, she is super nice! and how could I ... read more

Arras, France: June 2007 I’m not quite sure when the idea came to me, but I suddenly realised that, in our dash to see other parts of France, we drove straight through some to most historic parts of it, without even slowing down. I thought it was about time to put that right, so set about looking for a central town in which to stay. My eyes alighted on Arras. I’d seen it on signposts many times as we drove along the main road, heading toward, well who knows where; we always seemed to wind up on this road. A little research led me to think it might well be a good centre to explore the area. I was right, and it proved to be so much more than just a centre… Sat 16th June I’d ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais » Lille January 11th 2009

I am tempted to start this entry with a clearly untrue but still quite heartfelt “Only in France!” Let me elaborate. It’s January in Lille. Now, Lille winters are generally substantially milder than Ohio or Pennsylvania winters. It does not get as cold - in fact, it rarely gets down to freezing. Rather than snowing, it rains…which is miserable, but that is beside the point. The point, rather, was that this particular winter WAS cold. Uncharacteristically so. Freezingly so. For about two weeks, it got cold enough for the ever-present puddles that gathered in uneven spots in pavement and where there were missing cobblestones froze and remained frozen. Rain froze, it sleeted, it snowed. Lungs, hands, and noses felt the stinging, burning sensation of sub-zero temperatures. Normally, this would not bother me at all - au ... read more

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Years! It's been a while since I have written in here but I hope to get everyone caught up as to what i've been up to. Christmas break was absolutely one of the best times ever! Saturday December 20th 2008.. I went to Disney Land in Europe!!! Soooo much fun, I have never been to Disney Land before and I have always wanted to go and who would have known I would have got to in Europe! I went with Cindy and we spent the whole day from like 10 in the morning until 10 at night going on rides, taking pictures, of course waiting in line, and seeing Cinderella's castle and I really liked how everything made me feel like I was inside a Walt ... read more

Friday December 26 2008, PARIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was sooo excited to be going to Paris! I have been in Paris one time but it was the very first day i arrived here and I was soo tired that day so i was very happy to get to go back again. First off I went with Marie Jose (host mom) her sister, and Andrea we got to walk around in Paris and I was just so thrilled to be even walking down a street in Paris! We went into a huge church and I went to this one point and saw just about all of Paris and then walked down a street of people painting pictures and it was just everything that I have ever expected France to be! Then I walked down another street and commented on ... read more
