so i've now been here for 1 month and 2 days and i am just now falling into a daily routine. i knew it would take me a while to settle in, but 1 month, wow. i've started running 5 times a week with a friend (thank god, the pastries are so cheap and irresistible here!), and i now have a set class schedule with some "homework" i'm supposed to be doing. homework really isn't so obligatory over here, especially for the exchange students). i have homework in my french for non-native speakers class, my translation classes, and my one-on-one conversation course (we have to write in a journal). and that's it. in my other courses i'm supposed to be doing reading.....but i'm way behind in all of it because i can't read french quickly and ... read more

I just wrote in here and everything got deleted!!! Ahh so frusteratign typing online because you never know when things are going to be deleted! Okay so I feel bad I never write in here as much as I would like to but I will try to fill you all in on my past weeks... Last week I went to Alice's house (Fleurines friend) soo much fun! We ate crêpes, listened to English and French music, laughed because we both used dictionarys to explain what were trying to say, spent time with her family went to a museum.. The museum was really cool because it was actually closed but one of Alice's relatives works there and let us have like a private tour! Sooo beautiful! Everything was hand crafted and it reminded me so much of ... read more

unfortunately, when i go to update my blog, my internet won't work. we have such crappy unreliable wireless, it really makes me angry. so typically i find myself updating my blog at 1 in the morning, like right now. oh well. so classes continue here.....not really getting any easier, but hopefully by the 4th class i will get an idea of how to understand each professor, and how they talk, etc. how to take notes as they are mumbling at incredible speeds....in french. so that's school. right now i'm working on trying to figure out what exams/papers i will have to do and making sure i can do them either before the vacances or at the end of exam week. as of right now i plan to be home in burlington from the 21st of december ... read more

I am no longer SDF (sans domicile fixe - homeless)! After a solid week and a half of spending six to eight hours looking on about twenty websites, making calls, and being told that the person who answered was sorry, but the apartment in question had already been rented, I finally found a place. I was sitting in my favorite café in Vieux Lille called Soficcino that offers free WiFi to its patrons. I love Soficcino because it has an upstairs with a counter that overlooks Rue de la Monnaie, a very busy and charming cobblestone street in the Old Town. I also love the ambiance - dark wood, quiet conversations, and music from the twenties, thirties, and forties playing in the background. Anyway, I was a week and a half and several hours into researching ... read more

Hey everyone... Got the chance to write a little bit and I know how everyone is lokingforward to hearing what's new for me in France. Well last sat.. I got to go to the swimming pool for swimming lessons again which I really liked and enjoyed getting to swim again. Then the host mom and I went to the movies. I was a little worried that I was not going to understand the movies because it would obviuosly be in French. We watched Faubourg 36 and I understood everything because the acting was very good and the music just made everything really easy to watch and understand what was going on in the movie. Aftewards we went to a really nice café at night and I got hot chocolate which was of course really good. The ... read more

Sunday 28th September, 2008 Not an early start to the day as we woke up about 10 o'clock. The sun is shining again! and the weather is great, the air is a little cold but, certainly T-Shirt weather. A gentle drive heading towards Arras, was the plan for the day. We stopped the Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery containing approx 8,000, another beautifully kept and picturesque site. This was the cemetery from which the Canadians, removed an unknown Canadian soldier, to be re-interred in their Unknown Soldier memorial in Ottowa. We visited the Vimy Ridge trench system in the park bequeathed to the Canadians after the war, by the French. This has been kept more or less preserved, as it was when the war ended. The parallel running of the trenches and the size of No Man's ... read more

Saturday, 27th September, 2008 Left Ieper this morning, with a general heading of Bethune. Around lunchtime we stopped at a supermarket and had a coffee. Passed by many War Cemeteries and stopped at four - Trois Arbres Cemetery 1705 Burials Le Grand Beaumart Cemetery 552 Burials Vieille Chapelle New Military Cemetery ? Several hundred Zelobes Indian Cemetery 105 Burials Paid our respects at each of them and signed the visitors book when found. This really took up most of the morning and we arrived at the Bethune Premier Classe approximately 2 o'clock. We used the automated reception, which was impressive and very easy to use. Because the weather was so nice, we chilled for a while on the benches outside the Hotel and caught up with emails etc. The temperature registered as 39°C on my Clock ... read more

PM Thursday 25th September Left the Premiere Classe, having sorted our gear out all over their car park and drove about 10 metres to the Carrefour Car Park. We had two cafe au lait's each to start the day and moved on to Dunkirk proper. Managed to find the Dunkirk Memorial and cemetery. Column 153, showing the name of Meadows W, which was the first monument on right, immediately from the entrance. This was the name mentioned in my grandfather's travel letter of 1961, in which he says that he was part of the Dunkirk evacuation, and that he had found the memorial to his cousin who had been killed at that time, in 1940. Eventually navigated the Dunkirk town centre and found our way to the dockside port area. Had lunch in Les Boucaniers and ... read more

I would like to thank everyone who made this week a little bit easier for me. =) I really appreciate all the prayers and uplifting messages. School is starting to get a lot better for me because the teachers are starting to understand that i'm here for the Language and the Culture not just for grades. The student's could not be nicer many people ask me to have lunch with them everyday and I feel like I always have a friendly face to look to if i'm feeling extreemly lost during the lesson. Students here really try to help me out and that makes the whole school experiance 10 times better for me. We had school pictures today but they are not the same as taking school pictures in Montrose haha the whole class got just ... read more

PM Wednesday Well,we arrived safely in St Pol Sur Mer and found the Hotel, a premiere classe at 36 Euro's a night, good value. Newish, clean & tidy, shower - that travelers on the Fred. Olsen Cruise Ships would be very familiar with. Went looking for a quaint little French Restaurant to celebrate our first evening in a fine food country. However, after walking quite a few kilometers through a town type area, we eventually made the decision that we had gone far enough, and our first meal was at a kebab shop “Snack Pol Delice” and availed ourselves of the “eat in” facility. I have to say we were made very welcome and enjoyed what we ate. A kebab and a burger, both with frites and two cola lights. It will of course go down ... read more
