Mont Saint-Michel. Our first stop on this day was to be Mont Saint-Michel off the coast of Normandy. This would be followed by a visit to Omaha Beach, site of the American Forces D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. I was excited at both these prospects. Pictures of Mont Saint-Michel had always struck a chord of wonder, rising, as it does, pyramid-like out of the sea to a perfect pinnacle formed by the spire of the abbey. What was exciting about Omaha Beach was that it was just down shore from Juno Beach, where Canadian troops had landed. We were on a special mission related to Juno Beach. The drive to Mont Saint-Michel took about 3 hours and went through rolling Normandy farmland featuring a lot of canola and flax. Cindy drew our attention to the ... read more

Did you remember at what point in time you realized your partner was “the one”? I do. I was suddenly down with dengue fever in a strange city. My family was living on the other side of the country. I didn’t know who to turn to, so I contacted my then ex boyfriend (we were on a long break). Not only did he help to checked me in to a hospital, he also visited me every single night after work – without being asked. He even sneaked in fried chicken when I hated the hospital food. For comparison, my parents only visited me once for couple of hours in the 2 weeks duration of my hospitalization. To make matter worse, my lease was actually due that weekend and I have already signed new lease elsewhere. My ... read more

We are heading to Mont. St. Michel at the edge of the Normandy region today, and I woke up feeling like my fever had gone down a bit but the pressure in my head was like someone was in there banging on the inside to get out....UGH. We had a small breakfast before hitting the road to the Mont (3.5 hours). I slept most of the way, but we did make a stop at one of the many rest stops that they have on their highways. They are quite possibly the nicest we have ever experienced. Self cleaning and well kept. The overall landscape is heavily farmland. It's pretty amazing actually how many farms there are.Mont St. Michel actually has ... read more

Still no relief from the sauna that is our bathroom. We actually cracked the windows open to get some fresh sea air during the night. Nevertheless, I got a good night's rest in preparation for our drive on to our next destination. I was going to miss the old Hotel Normandie which had been our French home for the past 4 nights. I might have been talked into one last big breakfast at the hotel, but by now we had so many leftover snacks and drinks in our car that we felt we needed to polish off some of that stuff. Paying the bill was no problem despite the lack of a common language between us and the proprietors. $468.00 for two rooms for 4 nights. And no charge for the broken heater in the bathroom. ... read more

We arrived late at Mont Saint Michel on Sunday, and we were absolutely mesmerised by the medieval charm of this place. It wasn’t until Monday that we started to explore the medieval streets and the Abbey. The Abbey was amazing and its history was really interesting. The views from up there were fabulous. After exploring all this for most of the morning, we then decided to walk across the sand flats, as the tide was out, towards another island to see the abbey from another perspective. Later in the evening, after the sun had set, we went out to the causeway to see the Abbey floodlit. Mont Saint Michel has been one of the high point for us on our trip so far, and we would recommend it to anyone. Just be warned about the vast ... read more

Day 13 Out of our B&B and off to Mont Saint-Michel. Well organized tourist site - big car park with Free bus transport to the island. And better still - no queues. Just lots of steps up to the Abbey. Finally in and with our Audiologues we walk the abbey. Beautiful day (28 degrees) so the steps have got the sweat happening. In the Abbey it is much cooler. We sand outside and then the bells start to peel - Mass is about to start. 4 or 5 monks and 7 nuns start the mass with lots of singing - really impressive sounds - sorry Mike Mc, but they can really make the singing in this huge abbey sound fantastic.... The tour takes us through big halls, little rooms that are built to hold up walls ... read more

Day 12 Starts well with a hearty breakfast at our B & B but then it turns not so good. Finally get Stella (or is it Sylvia) -our GPS voice back. That is the good news, bad news is that I suff up the location and don't quite follow Stella's instructions and end up a long way in the wrong direction and have to do a U turn to get back on track. Finally back where we wanted to be and have a very nice time by the beach and the English Channel (very warm and sunny day). Lots of really old buildings to see, along with a few castles/forts built on rock outcrops guarding the entry to the port. Also see some guys getting trucks onto the beach to cross a low tide road to ... read more

Day 11 Early start for the train to Paris, along with all the workers who commute (just like the Geelong train I reckon). We got good seats and the train only stopped at 1 other station so we reckoned we were good - haha - not to be - the carriage was full after the 1st stop. Ticket inspectors got another one so we have been good by buying and stamping our tickets appropriately.... Into Paris and then onto Charles de Gaulle airpor to pick up our new car. Off without a hitch and we are now proud owners (albeit for a fixed time) of a brand new Renualt Megane 2 door Sports Coupe... Really slick looking unit and even got a hot bum from the heated seats while being given the run through.... Had to ... read more

Our trip to Mont Saint-Michel was today, and didn't get off to a great start. The bus left an hour late, and then on the way out of Paris, someone got hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing, and we had to stop for about half an hour. To top it all off, we had a group of 4 seriously annoying American girls on the bus who would not stop talking! Our 4 hour bus ride actually turned out to be a 5 hour bus ride, and once we arrived, we were given a measly 2 hours to explore this wonderful old abbey. The original structure was built in the 7th century, and construction continued all the way through till the 18th century. Throughout history, it was never claimed by a foreign aggressor, and was ... read more

Because of my cracked rib or ribs as the case may be, I did not sleep all that well, but it did allow me to get this great picture of Chateaux Chambord at 6 am. I am not sure the picture does it justice; it was a pretty amazing site with the low fog surrounding the Chateaux. We skipped breakfast and opted for food on the go, which was a great plan as there was a small patisserie in a village on our way back to the main road. We got croissants and café filled éclairs. It was the best éclair I have ever had. On the drive back to the main road we passed another chateau that is vacant, perhaps the Vaughn’s good buy it as a retreat. Might open up the European market for ... read more
