When we awoke this morning, we were in France! We had time for a quick breakfast in the restaurant, getting to see daylight onboard the ship for the first time. Once we said goodbye to he lovely ferry, the reality of the fact that we're on our own for the next 9 days set in. Fortunately, to Elysia's delight, people can understand her French, and she could understand them. We took a taxi to the Dinard airport to pick up the car. Elysia was pleased that she could hold a conversation with the driver. It's fun to be able to speak at least some of the language! When we got to the airport it was dark and looked closed, but it was past opening time. We were able to get inside and find the rental office. ... read more

Just by searching for the image of Mont Saint-Michel on Google, you will realize that at one point in your life, you must see this place in person. Just by looking at the whole facade of the island, it is very mind-blowing and weird. As a huge Final Fantasy fan, this is one of those places that I can easily picture seeing at any FF games, so there is no doubt that I had to visit this place. My visit to Mont Saint-Michel was basically a daytrip from Paris. Yes, it can be done - it's feasible, but you have to be concerned with time management. Not only do you have to take a 2 hour train, you also have to take an hour bus ride (and that is only the one way trip alone). My ... read more

There are some things in life that lose their awe-inspiring power when experienced again. The D-Day Beaches of Normandy, France, do not fit into this category. After checking out of the apartment, we left Paris bound for the village of Bayeux. From Bayeux, it was only a short bus ride to Omaha Beach. Cool and grey, the mood was set for a moving walk through history. Our visit began with a tour through the Omaha Beach Visitor Center. Though the events and facts of the D-Day invasion were factually presented, the beauty of the Visitor Center is not its preservation of historical information. Rather, the center focused on the individual stories of sacrifice and heroism. Through videos, letters, and diary entries, we were moved by the incredibly personal perspective. What made the presentation even heavier was ... read more

When I decided to move to Paris my biggest fear was that I expected to get very homesick. But, after living here for the past eight months one of my biggest surprises has been that I haven’t! That’s not because I don’t love my family and friends or think that the USA is a great place to live- it’s because that since moving to Paris there hasn’t been much time that passes that someone doesn’t come here to visit! Just last week I spent nine days touring my aunt and cousin around Paris and then we took a side trip to Normandy to visit a very impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site site, Mont Saint Michel... MONT ST. MICHEL Day 9 Got the super early train to Pontorson so that I could visit Mont St. Michel. Before I forget to comment on an important matter; dogs are allowed to ride the train in Europe. All over the place I keep seeing dogs on the trains and not just little ones either. I like it! Dogs should be able to ride whatever train they want to. Back on track now, Mont St. Michel is an amazing abbey that is built on a hill in the middle of a bay. There is a road that has been constructed in order to reach the hill. The story goes that the Archangel Michael came to St. Aubert in a number of dreams and told him to build this abbey on this particular spot. So that ... read more

Bonjour! Ca va? Je suis magnifique, merci beaucoup! So there we were, leaving the City of Lights behind, and just about as walked-out as we could be. It was really nice to spend a couple of days in a campsite, with access to a laundry and an information desk full of power points to charge our seemingly endless batteries. But at €21.50 a day, it was starting to break our budget. Haha! So off we went on the morning of the 8th of December, en route to Versailles. The place needs no introduction, being one of the finest examples of Baroque rococo architecture in the world. It is an embodiment of everything the French desire in life - style, expensive taste, flamboyance and size mattering. We arrived after a fairly intensive left and right workout from ... read more

These pictures were taken in Bayeaux and at Mont Saint Michel Abbey on July 25 and 26. the Bayeaux tapestry is now displayed under glass, but was originally hung around the nave of the Cathedral in Bayeaux. Mont Saint Michel is an island abbey that has been a pilgrimage center since A. D. 708. The Bishop of Avranches built this abbey after receiving instructions from Michael the Archangel. It is connected to the mainland by a 2 mile causeway. During low tide it is surrounded by mud flats. When high tide rushes in, most of the parking lots are submerged and the island, except the causeway, is surrounded by water.... read more

Day 5 (Tuesday, September 1, 2009) Much to my disappointment, we awoke to a cloudy morning in Bayeux. After getting ready and packing our bags, we walked over to a nearby grocery store and then a patisserie in order to stock up on some food. Our first stop of the day was a small town called Balleroy, where we had wanted to visit it’s chateau. The approach to the chateau was via a grand avenue that had identical trees lining the street the entire way. The chateau was commissioned back in 1631, and was owned for several centuries by the Counts of Balleroy. In 1970, the famous Malcolm Forbes purchased the palace and restored it. He also decided to create a museum within the chateau dedicated to ballooning, an avid pastime of his. Upon arrival, ... read more

The Petit Tour - Day 1 Streatham Hill to Brittany is a few hundred miles as the crow flies. We didn't have a crow big enough, so chose to drive, crossing the channel in the belly of a train and stopping at a WWII cemetery and in William the Conqueror's backyard on the way. Driving on the right, and therefore the wrong, side of the road didn't hinder our progress as much as the numerous 'peages' (toll stations) en route, which reduced the deluge of British caravaners to a trickle. The American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer is located behind Omaha beach. Looking down from the viewpoint you get the impression that the flat expanse of sand would be an excellent place to throw down a towel and chill out. No need to get up early to beat ... read more

Day 15: Monday, July 6, 2009 MONT-ST. MICHEL, FRANCE Alarm went off at 6:00 am, but no point in getting up that early. Not only was I tired, but it was very overcast outside. Went back to bed. Decided to get moving around 7 am or so. Today the plan is to tour Mont. Saint Michel. This UNESCO listed site was a former abbey built on a rocky island mount. Around the base of the mound were built protective walls within which a town and the abbey were built. Everything spirals up to the abbey, which sits at the apex. Previously it was connected to land via a thin natural bridge that would be covered during high tide. However, now days there is a raised causeway on which cars (and many tourist buses) can pass safely. ... read more
