Hello again! We are back and hopefully now having internet at home we'll be keeping you more up to date with what we have been doing. This happened almost a year ago. We left to Paris on the 1st Sept by Eurostar this time, forget about the coach! It was great, we arrived early and went straight to visit my Grandad who lives about 1 hour by train from Paris. We spent the night at Tiphaine and Murilo's place, they have a studio not very far from the centre of Paris. We didn't do much that night. The next day we made our way to my Auntie's place where the wedding was happening, not before Tom went to a MacDonalds to have a Royal with cheese and beer (have a look at the Pulp Fiction ... read more

La Vie Bella - Life is Good! So it has been about three weeks from my last entry and boy has that time flown. I have been so fortunate to pack so many things into the last three weeks. The focus of August for me has been food, food, food, rose, rose, rose and on the side some boating (of all types - kayaking, sailing, power boating), and some mountain walks (well one anyways). I will beak up this entry into a few bits (perhaps if you have a map of France check it out!). Solliers Pont & Hyeres - The Scene: Sun, Sun, Sun, Happy Times and Great Food and Wine! We arrived at Solliers Pont the home of the Dinsdale’s in Mid August after the Europeans, and this was to be my home for ... read more

I may not have the spelling right: this is an old house that Mark and Trish Tyler, the mom/dad of my famille d’acceuil, have recently bought and are rebuilding. I don’t know exactly how old it is, something like 200 or so years old (probably older). Mark and his crew have totally gutted the place, and are now installing pipes and preparing the floor for the concrete foundation that will be laid in the coming weeks. I spent the last three days sanding the wooden floors in one of the upstairs rooms; they are the original wood from the original construction of the house. ... read more

I guess it didn’t occur to me before arriving in the region that the scenery would be vineyards, vineyards, and more vineyards. The scenery is really beautiful, and after working at Magnolia Grill for six months and hearing the chef talk at length about Bordeaux wines, it was kind of cool to see the vineyards, taste the wine, experience it. The economy of the region essentially depends on wine production and the tourism industry that has arisen out of the region’s reputation for fine wines, wineries, and chateaus. Among parents of the kids involved in the two Pineuilh teams there are atleast three winery proprietors/owners, and atleast two others who work in the vineyards/wineries. ... read more

Jean-Marie (my friend who I’d met at the tournament in Moscow and who initially invited me to come and teach baseball), accompanied by the club president, was to meet me at the train station in Mussidan, a smaller station before reaching Bordeaux. I learned two things on this train from Lyon to Bordeaux: first, if it is a small station, the train stops for a very short time (about a minute). The second lesson was that the doors on some French trains are very difficult to open. Because of these two things, I did not get out at Mussidan. It was an aweful feeling trying to open this door (thinking I had ample time to exit the train) and seeing through the window Jean Marie and Alain, le president, standing there scanning the (small) crowd of ... read more

Well, I wanted to write a bit about Pau (the city I stayed in on my visit to the Pyrenees). I wanted to explain how it's downtown exists on many levels (literally), how the views of the mountains make you feel humble, and how its mix of the historic and the modern give a sense of city in a constant state of becoming. I wanted to tell about the street musicians playing "El Condor Pasa" (which I only knew from my love of Paul Simon music), the 1-hour photo incident (another quintessential French situation), and the search for the lost pastry. But, I'm running out of vacation time, so I will once again let the pics do the talking. Enjoy!!! P.S. For my photographer friends, the whole day was shot with a fixed length lens equivalent ... read more

August 23, 2006 Today was dedicated to exploring the Pyrenees Mountains. There looked to be a lot of amazing things to do here including hiking, rafting, kayaking, mountain climbing, and horseback riding. Of course, there’s also skiing and snowboarding during the winter season (which I assume lasts quite a while). Without forward planning, a little sightseeing by car and minimal hiking on beginner trails were the option for me. In fact, I was pretty lucky. These mountains can apparently be pretty fickle (even in the summer) and it is ill advised to do even minimal hiking without some basic hiking gear (knife, water, jacket, sweater, compass, route maps, etc.). Of course, I had none of these, but the weather forecast was clear for the next few days (except a little rain shower in the late afternoon), ... read more

....or Jim and The Three Bears August 22, 2006 NOTE: Today, no pictures but lots of travel. Even if you’re in it for the pictures it might be worth a read to get a sense of the travel situation in France. Since I love it here, including the idiosyncrasies, please know that as I write this my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek. Simone is working all week, so I'm off to explore more of France (and give her a bit of a break from house guests). On to…the Pyrenees. After Internet searches and guide book perusing, I settled on Pau as a base station to explore the mountains. I found a hotel (the Inter-Hotel de Gramont) that had been well received by reviewers and was only $60 Euros (about $80 US/night), which if ... read more

After driving through the night, many coffee stops and a bit of a snooze we arrived near Bordeaux at about 9 ish. We decided to head to the coast to find a camp site. After going in to a couple to see the "Campsite Full" signs we got a bit worried and thought we might have to try some 2* sites (a bit sceptical after the last one being a rubbish 3* one). So we tryed one, it was nice and cheap and the pitches seemed nice enough there was a shop and a takeaway pizza place just outside (you don't need much more) (For the benefit of Sarah & Nathan it was called La Praise in Lacanau, look for Spar on the right). Even though we were knackered, after setting up we went to check ... read more
