Monday saw the start of yet another era (seems to be happening a lot at the moment) I am no longer a spritely twentysomething with a spring in my step and the world at my feet.... no I am now wiser, saggier and preparing for serious world domination... :o) To mark this occasion Ben has been plotting and scheming behind my back, which I have now forgiven him for. I have to point out that I am very proud of my restraint - I could have hacked into his email, read his messages, tapped his skype and generally tourtured him to spill the beans but no I behaved. And I was very glad that I did. On Friday Ben disappeared to do the shopping and returned 2 hours later with my mother, my brother Steve and ... read more

Hi all, Not going to make any apologies about the lack of a blog over Christmas.... we were relaxing fully for the first time in ages!!! Been a wonderful break from everything, we do however hope that you all had a good holiday and wish you all the best for the forthcoming new year.... We downed tools just before Christmas to run to the airport and pick up Helen's mother who was joining us for the festive period, we managed to just finish off the first room for here visit, literally put the hammer in the tool box, picked up the keys to the landrover and off we went!!! We spent most of the time relaxing, had a few visits to local attractions, such as Bayonne, a beautiful town near the coast, huge fortified walls and ... read more

No mistake in the spelling for the title - that's how we will probably be speaking after getting through our Christmas stash of vino!! After a quick recommendation from our friends at the camp site in Naverrenx we decided to top up our wine rack, which had been starting to look a little bare from when we used to live in the UK. We had bought a few bottles and even though a lot cheaper than buying wine back home we started to feel that it was going to cost us a few bob to set up for the Christmas period - so off we trundled to the local cave - these are small wine producers, very local and very cheap! We had bought our 20 litre jerry can, a hand corker and some corks. We ... read more

Hello to all. Hope everyone is starting to get into the festive spirit!! Weather here has turned again - very, very cold first thing and in the shade, but really nice and warm around midday and in the sun, bit like being back in the UK when you go out you don't know what to wear! Also the snow is growing everyday now on the mountains - looks fantastic! People have been asking for more photo's so here they are, these are more views from around the town and of the mountains - hope you all enjoy. Also the decorating is going well, now have fiber glass to add to splinters in my hands, plus we had to evacuate the house yesterday as the floor varnish was so strong we were both starting to see double!! ... read more

Hello all. Brief up-date on progress and events here in France. Continuing on from the events of Shark extreme myself and Helen found ourselves caught up in the local crowd at the local bar. This comprised of a few rugby players, the local vet and some particularly mad bikers. Wine and beer was flowing and we soon found ourselves in the middle of the community in the bar, conversations were a mix of english, french and franglais! Everyone was having a ball. We were an amusement for the rugby players who initiated our arrival in the town with wierd sweet liquor which had to be downed at regular intervals - have since found out that chicken in english is the same in french when being applied to someone not taking a risk or their drink quick ... read more

The two most wonderful things about Bordeaux for me (Matt) were the wine tasting and the football match (soccer for the lay American). So, I figured I would give a compare/contrast of the two events. Football Match: 1. Cheerleaders US = cute girls with pom poms leading cheers Them = drunk guy with megaphone leading cheers and songs that EVERYBODY knows (except us of course) 2. Start of game US = flashblubs everywhere Them = first two rows set road flares on fire 3. Fan Passion US = lots of cheering and booing Them = From Stephan - our friend/guide for the game "A fan was shot and killed by a cop in Paris last night during a game, but these two teams are friendly, so I think it should be okay." Also, they closed off ... read more

SHARK EXTREME explained!!! Our quiet, beautiful and tranquil new home became a pit lane this Sunday! There has been a sign on a roundabout near the town for ages now - SHARK EXTREME 26th NOV - it has been puzzling us for a while so we looked up their website the other day and it turns out to be a 3-4 day event with teams competing in all sorts of extreme sports events covering the Pays Basques and finishing in our quiet town ... QUITE!!! I popped my head out of the door to go and get some bread for the morning and walked into the town square, nothing really happening, was the start of another beautifully sunny day, a single van appeared and started to unpack a small marque for its bikes, a couple of ... read more

The Best Place in France...so far... I think I am a little bit in love with Bordeaux. Can you tell from the title? I just spent a WONDERFUL three days there with my friends Dorothy and Janine, and even during the rainiest month of the year it was fabulous! What a beautiful city...dating back to pre-Roman Iron-Age times...full of ancient history, beautiful medieval buildings, bustling pedestrian shopping streets and a magnificent river that arcs gently towards the Gironde and the Atlantic Ocean. And who can forget the hundreds of thousands of vineyard acreage that distinguish Bordeaux as the wine capitol of France (of the world???) Dorothy and I 'flew' down on the ultra-speedy TGV train on Friday morning to arrive in Bordeaux at about 11:30 in the morning. The worst part of the whole trip ... read more

Firstly sorry for the delay in our blog entries - as you can imagine trying to set ourselves up over here has taken a little time, but now we have the phone and internet installed you find that they should be a little more regular now! Like buses none for ages then about 3 come along at once! Sooooo Since we have been here we have started work on the centre section of the house, this area only really needs finishing off as it has been modernized already to a good standard but the decoration is not too our liking and if we want to use this part of the house a business it needs finishing to our high standards!! Already we have removed the laminated flooring and the plastic built in wardrobes and re-painted the ... read more

It is amazing how the small things matter - for the last three weeks we have been perched on two capming chairs and two particularly nasty orange poofs (which is alright if there is only two of you but with five the poofs start complaining!) Anyway back to the beginning... We arrived in France on a particularly foggy morning ...which will be nothing new to those of you who know Northern France... but meant that we spent an intersting 30 mins attempting to determine where we where. Once that small obstacle was over come - we were trucking - all be it at Cadbury's top speed of 100kph. We reached Arcachon, just south of Bordeaux by 6 and decided to stop for a night in a bed - having slept on thenight on the floor of ... read more
