BIARRITZ to ST JEAN de LUZ (via Sans Sebastian) - 10th May 2007 (Thursday Biarritz 27º Sunshine: Sans Sebastian 17º and Overcast) We wake and decide to move on. This is the beauty of our mode of travel - if we like a place we stay and if we don’t we move on. Its not that we don’t like Biarritz it just doesn’t hold much for us (and besides our Sunglasses aren’t big enough). The car is on a meter and I go out to provide it with an endless stream of euros but it is Hors Service (Out of Order). This pleases me greatly until Deb points out that there is another machine just across the street. Petit De’jeuner is taken at ‘The Passage’, a funky little café/shop across the street from the Bellevue. It ... read more

St EMILION to BIARRITZ - 9th May 2007 (Wednesday St Emilion 23º Sunshine& Biarritz 27º Sunshine) We are not keen to depart Chateau Franc Pourret but it is time to move on. St Emilion matches every expectation that one might associate with driving in the south of France - it is with regret that we leave people and places that we will never forget. My savvy navvy points us in the direction of Bordeaux but we skirt the City and take ‘périphérie’ (ring road) and head towards Archacon, which is on the coast (this is the way recommended to us by Catherine Ouzoulias). We drive through any number of small coastal villages that would be full to bursting had it been peak season and emerge on the other side of civilisation into pine forests that are ... read more

St EMILION - 8th May 2007 (Tuesday 21º Partly Cloudy) Today is a Public Holiday to mark the Liberation of France and the end of WWII. Homemade crepes with castor sugar for breakfast. C’EST YUM! Today we are going into Bordeaux for a look around this big city. We drive to within 5 kilometres of the city centre, park the Ford Focus Ferrari and wait to catch the train. Well it looks more like a Tram but we are assured it is a train (see photo). This city is in the process of reinventing itself. The current Mayor has embarked upon a modernisation and beautification program. He has ordered the boulevards be restored and widened, he has given right of way to pedestrians in areas formerly governed by l’automobiles, he is responsible for the modern train/tram ... read more

St EMILION - 7th May 2007 (Monday 22º Partly Cloudy) Catherine Ouzoulias is not only a great homemaker and interior decorator; she is also a great cook. Cooking aromas entice us downstairs from our room. We arrive to be seated at a lovely table for two, which is made up with antique linen tableware and crockery. The smells that drew us were the homemade apple pies, freshly baked baguettes and ginger breads. These are competing for attention with the muesli, as well as 8 different varieties of chutneys, jams, relishes and freshly brewed café au lait. After breakfast we drive to nearby Lebourne to get some digital pictures copied from SD card to CD. The guy in the Kodak shop talks about Australia and in particular the recent drug use allegations against Ian Thorpe. Of course ... read more

LA ROCHELLE to St EMILION - 6th May 2007 (Sunday 24º) We have been blessed with the weather. It is another cracking day in the South East of France and what does one do when the weather is good? Well one does one’s washing, doesn’t one! I spend 20 minutes in the Laundrette next door to the Hotel working out how to operate the soap powder dispenser and finally extract enough powder to make some bubbles. Throw the clothes into a washing machine the size of a Cement Truck and leave Deb in charge as I go to extract the car from the underground car park. It is a peaceful walk through Town, after all it is Sunday, and even the French must rest. I am fearful that the FFF (Ford Focus Ferrari) may be jacked ... read more

Fist internet access so far, but cannot publish photos and full entry. We are now at St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees. Wall to wall sunshine so far. First night at a pleasant village in Normandy, then on to St Severin in Charente to stay at L'Etang, Gary and Linda's beautiful retreat. So far everything working fine on the van, which is much admired. Today, we cross the mountains into Spain.... read more

Firstly we can say that there is no excuse for such a lapse in our entries. APART from we have been busy, entertaining, building, integrating, painting, plastering, gardening, going out to dinner or BBQ's with new friends, walking, running, skiing, cycling, cheering on the local rugby side, days at the beach and basically rushing around the area. When we first moved over here, people said to us, goodness you coming in the winter? They said it would be grey, quite, miserable and cold. Well yes, there were cold, grey wet days but nothing we were not used to back home in England. As for the quite life, you must be joking. The people we are meeting both local and ex-pat are nothing short of fabulously friendly. We have probably made more friends here in the ... read more

Sup everybody, So I safely arrived in Bordeaux early this morning. There are lots of stories to tell, but I will get to those tonight or maybe tomorrow. I will be getting on a train to Le Buisson later tonight and meeting my new farming friends. I can hardly wait to sleep... I've been up almost 24 hours straight. I believe Derek is in Spain at the moment, I have not heard from him in a couple of days. He wasn't having a good time in Morocco so he decided to leave. There is a farm in the North of Spain that he really wants to go to, maybe he headed there? Anyways tell you guys more later!!! xoxox Princess Stephka... read more

Today we went with our program to the town of Bayonne, just past Biarittiz in Southern France, but still in the Basque Country. Although we were only there for a couple hours, we really enjoyed this adorable town!! We walked around on a little tour given to us by our professors and learned about the churches and the barriers built to keep enemies out of the city limits. Then, we learned the real reason the teachers had brought us to this town -- chocolate! This city is known for its amaaaazing chocolate, and we spent the rest of our time in France wandering the cobblestone streets, going in and out of the family-owned chocolate stores, admiring the perfect, delicious creations. We also sat at a cute French cafe as the owner brought us chocolat chantilly, a ... read more
