After the ceremony we headed back to Gensac to have pizza and watch the rugby match Chateau Carbonneau (Wilfred and Jackie’s home and winery). France lost the match 47-3. Then after the game, we got into an interesting conversation about youth baseball in France, in particular the 13-15 Year old French championship that took place in Paris a few weeks ago while I was back in the US. The Pineuilh team (us) finished third place in France, but because of a disqualification of the first place team, Montigny, they ended up finishing second. And they only lost to the first place team because of a balk with the bases loaded in extra innings!! The Montigny team was disqualified because they had a few players that were ineligible to play. If I understand the scenario correctly, there ... read more

In the afternoon we went to Bordeaux with the Pineuilh baseball club to the ConforExpo. ConfoExpo is a regional trade expo held in a huge indoor convention center that is almost a mile in length. Included in the expo was a sports exposition showcasing all of the sports played in the Aquitaine region of France. I found it to be quite a bizarre event mainly because the sports were presented as a sort of novelty; many of the stands had a station set up where you could ‘try’ the sport, sort of like the games at a carnival or a state fair. There were tiny goals to shoot soccer balls into, swimming pools where you could try out boating, mini bowling alleys, a speed pitch at the baseball stand, etc., etc., Many of the stands had ... read more

I learned today that here in France, the government gives welfare to families who have children. They pay people to have kids!! As Laurent explained it to me today, the government begins giving you weekly checks once you are four months into pregnancy, around 160 euros per child (about 200 dollars), then the week you give birth you receive 700 Euros, and then your weekly checks increase as the child gets older. You receive an extra 200 Euros for beginning-of-schoolyear expenses, and then you receive various amounts for other particulars. On top of that, there is universal healthcare in France, which means all of your health expenses are covered by the government. There is a woman down the street from us in Gensac who has 12 kids!! I think the amount of money you receive diminishes ... read more

This first photo is of Harry, Hugh, and Max, and Mr. Guy Fawkes. On Saturday we had a bonfire party at La Girade. It was outdoors, in what will eventually be the backyard terrace of the Tyler’s new house. For the moment it is still only dirt and mud, so all those invited were encouraged to bring their ‘Wellies’ to the party. Wellies are what they call rubber boots in the UK, because they were originally manufactured in a city called Wellington (I think). Trish and Mark cooked up squash soup, sausages (veggies for the vegetarians), and some sort of onion dish. Just before the party was to start, Max (the oldest son) and I went off to Wilfred and Jackie’s house (they own the winery I showed in pics in an earlier blog) to pick ... read more

I am learning more and more about La Girade as we go. Again, La Girade is the house where I am working, and the eventual home of the Tylers. Mark Tyler bought the property from the Carrive family; it had been on the market for twelve years, and eventually the family decided to sell it to the Tylers (about a year ago). The house was home to Jean Carrive and his wife for most of the last century. Jean Carrive was an artist, a painter among other things, and he was part of the Surrealist Movement in France during the earlier part of the twentieth century. He is one of the original signers of Andre Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto. Pretty cool!! During the second world war, a painter named Balthus (also known as Count Balthazar Klossowski de ... read more

With a feeling of deja vu we once again spent yesterday packing all our worldly possessions into the car filling every possible space to begin the road trip to France. The difference being this time it’s for good. And the car is a little more spacious ;o) Cornelius has sadly gone, but never forgotten, to a lovely new owner who is going to keep the name- good girl. We also have a number of new team members to introduce as this time the trip is not just Benny and I. Below are the more printable details fo the crew for mega trip number 2. Well, here I am again. In Europe. I arrived back in Gensac, southern France, two days ago. I have been house-sitting for the Tyler family, as they are still on their vacation in Scotland (or England? I can’t remember where they are). I think they get back today. I arrived Tuesday night and crashed almost immediately. Slept for sixteen hours. That is the longest I have ever slept in one night. It makes me think of the first time John (my brother) got back from studying in China and he slept for 24 hours straight (!) and the only reason he woke up is because we brought him breakfast in bed. I woke up remembering that I was supposed to give the cats breakfast. When I came upstairs I found that one of the neighbors had ... read more

It was a long trip down to Bayonne from La Rochelle, involving a change at Bordeaux. I briefly considered staying in Bordeaux for a night or two, but I really wanted to move on to Spain soon, so I decided to continue on to Bayonne. I arrived at the station in Bayonne after dark. On top of that it was also raining, which made for a really pleasant walk over to the toursit information office, which thankfully was still open. They were really helpful and provided me with a bus map since the hostel was a good 5-6K away near the water. I walked over to the bus shelter and waited about 10 minutes for the right bus to come. The woman at the TI had told me to take the bus all the way to ... read more

Time passes so quickly. I have now been staying in Gensac, working at La Girate, and coaching baseball in Pineuilh for a week. There are numerous projects going on at La Girate, the house that I am working on with Mark. My first day here was spent rearranging all of the spare wood and stored junk in the storage room: really exciting. Then I moved on to tearing out a ceiling, helping install the drainage system around the outside of the house, beginning to create a walkway around the house…..Friday and today were spent drilling holes at the base of the interior walls of the house, then filling them with water, then filling them with a chemical/solution that protects the walls of the house from humidity. This afternoon was probably the most fun of all of ... read more
