After a tough 10 days in Turkey we met up with 20 mates from London for a week of sailing in Croatia. Days were spent island hopping from Slpit to Dubrovnik, sunbathing and stopping for swims in beautiful bays and sometimes in the middle of the ocean. After jumping from the top of the boat we'd float around on lylos until the lunch bell rang...it really was tough times ; ). And nights consisted of sundowners with a backdrop of awesome sunsets then dinner at local spots. Among the highlights of the trip was Dubrovnik, with its massive city wall enclosing terracota rooves, and sundowners at the 'Hole in the wall', which is a cool bar right on the waters edge. Hvar had an awesome fort, which was a steep hike up above the city, where ... read more

Unfortunately, this entry can't contain photos, because I'm currently in an internet cafe that doesn't have the USB cable I need to upload the tons of pictures I have taken over the past week. Stay tuned for a blog post that features exclusively photos of Croatia, Italy, and Switzerland. Anyway, as part of a way of enhancing our knowledge as world travelers, the staff at Kasteel Well took all 85 of us "castle dwellers" to Croatia, starting on the 9th of October (my birthday! By the by, thanks to all you kind people who wished me happy birthday. It was much appreciated). A day of travel is not the best birthday present one can receive, but I sucked it up, like I am inclined to do, and a bus ride to Cologne, Germany and a flight ... read more

THURSDAY After arriving in Croatia, just a short 2 hour flight from our Dutch home, we checked into our hotel which overlooked the Adriatic and the small town of Trogir in the distance. After dropping our bags off, we ate dinner on the shore at a place called Zule. It was mid October and we were eating dinner in t-shirts beside the shore. To add to the enjoyment, the exchange rate was very favorable. One Euro was equal to 7 Kuna; for instance, a huge pizza was equivalent to about 2 or 3 US Dollars. FRIDAY The next day we did a day trip to Trogir where we climbed a bell tower, visited a fortress and a monastery (with a monk in all white clothing contemplating in peaceful solitude) all in sunny, 80 degree weather. Throughout ... read more

There, that got your attention, didn’t it! Honestly, officer, it wasn’t us. It was that immoral young couple over there - it’s far too chilly for old folks like us, and lets be honest, it’s not that good a look any more! Cloudless blue skies and crystal clear blue water - could anyone ask for any more? Our incredible luck with the weather continues to hold, with the only rain on the whole trip being a couple of overnight showers in Russia, and rain as we drove to the airport in Budapest. While it has been totally clear, temperatures have probably been only in the mid-20s, so it has been pleasant to stroll around without getting fried. It has been an interesting progressive transition from Russia to Hungary to Croatia. In the former, we were on ... read more

Zagreb, capital of Croatia and often overlooked due to it's distance from the sparkling coastal waters - it's pretty cool though! We arrived in Zagreb in the early evening and for the first time didn't have anyone at the bus station to tout for our business. It meant a quick flick through the lonely planet to find a hostel - not great reviews, but we decided to risk it. We made our way to the tram line for the usual slightly confused reading of the tram line map (thank god for numbers and colour coding) and then a chilly wait for the right one to come along. It's not unusual in my life to be involved in random discussions with the occasionally odd person. This just happened to be one of those times, where a (I'm ... read more

Leaving Zadar to travel to Zagreb with one little stop over at Plitvice Lakes National Park. This place was the highlight of this trip as it was the most stunningly beautiful place. It's about 1/2 way between the two cities and is well worth a visit. It would be lovely at any time of the year, but in Autumn with the trees changing colour the reds, oranges and yellows against the clear blue green waters is breathtaking. Everyone often talks about clear water, but I have never seen water this clear which was great as I got to spend lots of time taling to the fishies! We took the bus to the almost top of the lakes then walked down dodging OAPs wherever possible - I'd do it again tomorrow. I figure I'll let the pictures ... read more

Zadar - city with 2 of the coolest things in Europe - the Sea Organ and the Sun Disk. These 2 things lift Zadar from being just another lovely Croatian coastal town to being a special place in my memory. Our first stop was coffee for me, a gallery for the guys then off to centre of happiness - the Sea Organ. Outside the old town on the sea front they have build a series of pipes into the waterfront so that the in and out of the waves create sounds along the waterfront. It's a wonderfully relaxing place to sit and spend an hour or 2. For us that meant sitting, talking and acting the goat. We had a mini exercise session, which I ran ... yes I know ... not the biggest advocate of ... read more

DAY 7 - ZADAR Because of the time, when left luggage opened at 6am I left my bag behind with the intention of seeing what Zadar had to offer. At 6am, not much except rain and darkness. So I did a walking tour of a very empty city in the rain. By the time people started appearing and the weather started clearing it was after 9am. Nothing much was open so I after looking around the markets, getting some breakfast, I got some directions to my hostel from the guy at the information centre. You would think he would be able to send me the right way!! But no. He said it was walking distance and pointed to an entirely different street. Looking at the map I still thought my hostel must be walking distance so, ... read more

DAY 5 - DUBROVNIK Woke up ridiculously early again this morning because the church bells were really loud. Basically veged around for a few hours before packing and moving to an alternative hostel in Lapad, outside the old city. Quite a few people staying at the hostel, which was more of a guesthouse, although seem to be excessive amounts of Americans. Didnt do much really given how much I had sqeezed into the previous days. Went for a very very long walk (6km return which I shouldnt have done in thongs (flip flops) on hindsight) all the way up to President Dubrovnik Hotel at the far end. Veged on the beach for a while but it was slightly too chilly to go swimming. For dinner wandered down to the beach again and then had some drinks ... read more
