After leaving Plitvice we drove essentially the entire length of Croatia heading south towards Korcula. We took a small ferry and landed on the island, which is about 2 hours from Dubrovnik. Being on a ferry felt like home. Minor difficulties in finding the place including thoughts of potential housing scam, but details aside we found our lovely terrace apartment overlooking the water. the next morning my friend Kari who has been studying down in the south of France joined us for the rest of our Croatian vacation. The island of Korkula is covered in green with only three cities total. Our first official night, we went out to a restaurant which claims to be Marco Polo's favorite restaurant. Croatian food is mainly Italian influenced with some hearty meats and tasty fresh fish. With the exchange ... read more

Day 1: Omis Pax for dinner: 19 (bbq) (If we ever start selling rafting again) ... It's important to collect rafting money the night we arrive in Omis, (before Neno arrives) because I didn't collect it until the morning before we were about to leave and four girls backed out at the last minute, which was a problem for Neno because he had hired an extra boat and skipper and we didn't end up needing them. If we collect money first, the pax probably won't back out. Just a quick word about rafting: I hope we can sort out the issues eventually because it was one of the biggest highlights for the 8 people who did it. I think it's really good to have an adventure sport excursion (whether it's in Omis or elsewhere), since the ... read more

Well, I’m back in Paris now. I think things are finally starting to settle down after an incredible stretch of travel with family and then a trip to another continent. I’m battling some tummy issues now after returning from Morocco (no, no swine) but I figured I use my down time to catch up on my blogs ☺ On Monday April 13 I finally got to see my Mom, Dad and Kellen! I hadn’t seen Dad and Kel since I left in September, 7 months! I thought I had had a day of travel after walking, taking a metro, taking the Eurostar Chunnel, taking the London Underground, then an hour bus to London Stansted, but when I arrived at the airport to meet the family (which I found in an Irish Airport Pub) they won the ... read more

Booking cheap flights that leave ridiculously early in the morning can seem appealing, but when you're alarm goes off at 2am and you then have to take a bus and train to the airport you start to wonder whether it could possibly be worth it - and thankfully it was! Our weekend on the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia definitely left us wanting more. We arrived in Split, Croatia's second largest city at 10am and after checking ferry timetables to Hvar Island spent the morning sitting on the Riva in the sunshine people-watching. After an early lunch and a quick look at Diocletian's Palace we boarded a ferry to Hvar. Neither of us remember much of the ferry ride as we were having serious trouble staying awake after our 2am wakeup but thankfully we were met at ... read more

We left Dubrovnik on another beautiful day and stopped after crossing over their impressive Franjo Tudjman Bridge, one of the largest single pylon, cable stayed bridges in the world, to take some photos. We then carried on up the Dalmatian coast and out to the Pelješac Peninsula which is a big wine growing region. The vines we saw here were quite different from those we saw in Italy, they were all only about a meter high and all gnarly and twisted. I didn’t look like they would produce as many grapes per vine compared to the Italian variety but there looked to be more vines per hectare - we were going to have to sample some. As we climbed up and over the peninsula the rocky lands gave way to forest and as we came over ... read more

We awoke on the ferry at 6am and got up for breakfast before arriving in Dubrovnik, Croatia at around 7am. It was a beautiful morning, a few clouds but warm and dry and Dubrovnik looked clean and quiet as we sailed in. Through customs without any hassles and got a new stamp in my passport (Croatia is not part of the EU yet) and on to the local supermarket to get some supplies, except it wasn’t open yet so we waited. It opened at 8, we got our supplies and drove on through the town to our campsite on the wooded Lapad Peninsula, luckily it was well signposted as we didn’t have a map and Doris hadn’t even heard of Croatia. We new roughly where we were going and Dubrovnik only has a population of around ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria April 24th 2009

The first Istrian town to acknowledge the Venetian rule was Poreč in 1267. In the Poreč port, there used to be a building that served as accommodation for pilots, experts who welcomed the ships heading towards Venice, boarded and guided them further to the Venetian lagoons. To ensure the navigation safety, the Venetians built a light house in 1403 on a small island near Poreč (island of St. Nikola). Raising 15 meters above the sea level, the lighthouse was the highest one on the Croatian shore of the Adriatic in that time. In the evening, fire was lighted in its top. It was the fire that caused the bareness of the island. For centuries the fire burned the trees on the island. In the 17th century, a large lantern r... read more
