Arriving on the ferry
We awoke on the ferry at 6am and got up for breakfast before arriving in Dubrovnik, Croatia at around 7am. It was a beautiful morning, a few clouds but warm and dry and Dubrovnik looked clean and quiet as we sailed in. Through customs without any hassles and got a new stamp in my passport (Croatia is not part of the EU yet) and on to the local supermarket to get some supplies, except it wasn’t open yet so we waited. It opened at 8, we got our supplies and drove on through the town to our campsite on the wooded Lapad Peninsula, luckily it was well signposted as we didn’t have a map and Doris hadn’t even heard of Croatia. We new roughly where we were going and Dubrovnik only has a population of around 44 000 anyway so how hard could it be? It was a lovely little town with its stone houses with terracotta rooves, a backdrop of stony, steep hills and the clear blue of the Adriatic in front. Our campsite was in walking distance of a couple of small beaches which we took a stroll down to see after setting up camp. They were beautiful and

deserted but I’m sure they would be crowded in summer, not sandy but covered with small stones and with beautifully clear water and many islands out to sea. We chilled out for the rest of the day lying in the sun or catching up on this blog while our washing dried.
The next day was another warm one and we caught the bus to the southern end of the town and the old city. The city is surrounded (like most) with a wall, but this one they are particularly proud of and you can walk around it. It had great views of the city and out to sea and along the coast. The wall was extremely well built and obviously well maintained but dizzily high in places especially over the cliff side. We also noted that due to the low wall along the sides of the path, the lack of any railings and the sometimes steep steps, OSH (occupational safety and health for the non-Kiwis) would have it closed in a minute. It was hard to imagine that this place was under attack from the Serbians only 14 years ago, but it did explain why so many rooves looked very

new. The tour of the wall took us about 3 hours (stopping lots for photos) and we wandered down through a few of the pedestrian streets afterwards and stopped for a beer in the small main square where we sampled the local brew and gave it our stamp of approval. We then meandered back to the bus stop outside the gate and got the next bus back to the campsite.
The next day we got up late and while I was reading our emails got a skype call from friends in NZ and we ended up chatting for over an hour. The quality wasn’t that great but our connection was courtesy of a local neighbours wireless so we couldn’t complain, and it was great talking to them - the internet can be a wonderful thing. Jac spent the afternoon in the sun while I went for a walk around the peninsula. It seems that the only industry in Dubrovnik is tourism and there are a number of big hotels on the peninsula with two or three more being built. I just wonder how far it will go and whether or not they will end up commandeering the whole of the

local coastline like some other European rivieras - I hope not but the search for the Euro might dictate otherwise. Still, I had a nice walk and just kicked back for the rest of the day. Tomorrow we head north up the coast.
