Croatians are a proud people with many traditions and an impressive nationalistic fighting spirit which has set them apart from many of the other countries in the region. Since the soviets left the region they carved themselves a nation against many overwhelming odds. We caught a plane from one of the lesser known airports just outside of London. Will and I had arrived at the airport 7 hours early for what we claimed was a most unecessary precaution, but in reality we didn't want to fork out 30 quid for half a night at a scummy east London hostel. I slept on the floor of the airport wrapped in my sleeping bag for lack of better options whilst Will chatted with Russian student girl and a large Irish African who gave a whole new meaning to ... read more

Croatia, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell DISCLAIMER: THERE IS NOTHING POSITIVE IN MY TALE OF CROATIA. CROTIA WAS HELL. I HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY AND YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF DEPRESSED OR EVEN ANGRY AFTER READING THIS. DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU ARE IN A GOOD MOOD, BECAUSE YOU WILL FEEL LIKE PUNCHING A PUPPY BY THE TIME YOU ARE DONE. EAT A DICK CROATIA, WE ARE NOT FRIENDS AND WON’T BE UNTIL I RETURN TO ENJOY YOUR SUMMER SPLENDOR ONE DAY. UNTIL THEN, I HATE YOU. Croatia is not the place to visit during the winter. It’s cold, it’s rainy and it really just sucked. Every story has a downside, every flock has an ugly duckling, our European adventure had Croatia. If I could fight Croatia in a back alley behind a bar, when I ... read more

(December 17th - 18th) The signs were all there. We just kept ignoring them. Apparently we didn’t want to see them and we just kept turning away. We were not supposed to go to Croatia. Sign #1: You can’t get there on Eurail. It seems like we’ve been doing good so far on this trip in terms of traveling around, but really its been pretty simple when all we do is whip out our Eurail book, see what time the train leaves and whether or not we need a reservation, and off we go. Any times we’ve had to use other means of transportation, things have gone wrong. Croatia is a bus country. You can get around to some of the places by train, but for some reason they take an exorbitant amount of time to ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik November 27th 2008

Dubrovnik is a beautiful coastal town in the south of Dalmatia. Alex and I arrived by bus from Mostar and were met right at the bus station by our guest house's owner. He drove us to the 'Banana Villa' via a series of narrow hairpin turns. Apparently winter tires are absolutely unheard of here, because the owner's car slid backwards down the wet road about three times before he managed to gain enough momentum to make it all the way up the road! As we were opening the shutters to the balcony, the owner got in a screaming match with what we could only guess was his son. The neighbors came out and shook their heads at the display, so we thought it must have been a regular occurrence. Afterward the son surprised us by throwing ... read more

The ride from Zadar to Split was one of the most beautiful I have ever experienced. Imagine the Big Sur in California with a much skinnier highway and the Mediterranean instead of the Pacific. Orange trees and vineyards abound. Split is a beautiful Roman city in the middle of the Dalmation coast. We were suprised by the intimacy of the place as the old town had many streets that were only wide enough for one person to walk along. It reminded me of Venice a bit, but much warmer! We were again approached by guesthouse owners as we got off the bus, but brushed them all off as we had planned to stay at a hostel called Al's Place. We walked into the place that was in the city walls only to find out that it ... read more
