Our boat to Dubrovnick left at 9 am and the journey from Cavtat took about an hour with a stop at another resort area. The old city of Dubrovnik was packed with tourists. Every major center seems to have tour buses and tour guides escorting groups. Dubrovnik probably had more tourists packed into a small area than anywhere we have been. This is a very old city which has been bombed on many occasions and a lot of money has been spent to restore the area. It seems most buildings on the main level are either restaurants or shops. Lots of vendors everywhere - many just bring a table and set up wherever there is space. The upper levels are rental apartments and regular residents. It is amazing to think that people actually live here. Our ... read more

Getting to Dubrovnik from Split The only direct way to get to Dubrovnik by car from the north of Croatia is to drive through Bosnia. No train service exists for this purpose probably due to the complication of going through this neighbouring country. We travelled the 4.5 hour journey from Split with a friendly Croatian guy, whose mother owned the apartments that we were staying in. The police on both sides of the border didn't bother looking at our passports, so we never collected another stamp in the book. War and peace Dubrovnik was an independent republic for 700 years until that was abolished by Napoleon in 1806. Since then, it has had a turbulent history with occupiers before, during and after the world wars. Croatia declared its independence in 1990 from the Socialist Federal Republic ... read more

Today we travelled down the Croation coast and skirted the perimeter of Dubrovnick to reach our destination - Cavtat - another small seaside town. Less tourists here. Along the way we drove through a delta area and stopped to pick up some local mandarin oranges and a bottle of the local wine ($5). We have a small apartment looking over part of the town. Like many of these towns there are stairs everywhere and you see very few overweight people. It is not unusual to find sets of stiars numbering 150 or more. This is a very old town with Roman walls dating back to the 1st Century. The seaside contained fewer very large boats and was the sight of about 15 restaurants and a small tourist market. Tomorrow we plan to take a boat to ... read more

Sailing Croatia Sailing down the Croatian Dalmatian coast line on the Adriatic sea, hopping from island to island was an amazing journey, especially having met a small group of new mates (again Kiwis and Aussies) all sharing this experience together on a 16.0 meter long powered sailing boat. - Now i say powered boat as most cruises on the Dalmatian coast use motor power to stick to their tight itinerary of scheduled stop overs and no wind means no sailing or slow sailing, the sails are just for show. However i did not expect to find the type of craft i imagined I'd be sailing in when i arrived at the dock. I must admit, i had preconceived images of a large sailing boat with big sails and large decks to sun bath on, well on ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Trogir September 25th 2008

The old city of Trogir is a small island with historical buildings, restaurants, a market and many tourist shops. The city dates back to the 7th Century. Streets are very narrow and basically there is only a road that connects the mainland to the island and then continues on to the island where our hotel is located. Everywhere you turn there are apartments for rent. This is the close of the tourist season and several places have already closed. The temperature today was about 24 degrees and people were sunbathing and a few swimming. This is definitely a seaside town with shipbuiding, fishing and many luxury yachts. Definitely looks like a page out of "Lifestyles for the Rich & Famous". The climate is more Mediterranean. Tomorrow we head for a small town south of Dubrovnick which ... read more

Today we took a break from visiting cities and travelled to Krka National Park. On entering the park you transfer to a bus which takes you to the major falls which are very picturesque. Many small streams spread out over a large area which come together at an impressive waterfall. The trip down the mountainside is interesting when two buses meet on a switchback road barely wide enough for 2 cars and no guardrails. We also joined a 4 hour boat tour which took us to an island which was home to a very well maintained active monastery complete with brown robed monks. The skipper was a real character who welcomed us on board with a glass of the local moonshine. They sell this stuff at the side of the road as you drive around Croatia. ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Zadar September 23rd 2008

Today we travelled from Punat to Zadar. The first part of the journey was along the coast followed by a trip up into the mountains where it was overcast and cool. We then got on the autoroute (toll roads) which has several tunnels one of which was about 3 km long. After the tunells we seemed to enter another climactic zone and the temperature was 19 - 20 degrees and sunny. Zadar is another old walled town and again another tourist destination. Lots of cruise liners and ferries to the islands and Italy & Venice. Many of the streets are paved with travertine. Still very busy in the cities but not as bad as what we have previously experienced. Our hotel was located on the seashore in Privlaka. John had a swim in the Adriatic. The ... read more

11/9 TRAVEL DAY TO ROME Left Venice today and headed to Rome - just for the night - fly to Croatia in the morning 12/9 FLIGHT TO CROATIA Left Rome and flew to Croatia arriving at 7pm, got a taxi to my hostel and crashed for the night. 13/9 Left the hostel at 10am this morning and headed to the port to find my boat for the 8 day Croatia Sailing. I checked in and found my boat the ISTOK, was a bit disappointed as it was much smaller than the others but we had a smaller group. I put my bags on board and went for a wander around the market stalls on the harbour. We boarded the boat at 12pm and were introduced to everyone and the crew. There were lots of couples and ... read more

Travelled from Ljubljana to Rijeka. Rijeka is a very old port town close to the border with Slovenia. Experienced a market and saw a few older buildings. Scenery became very interesting after Rijeka. Villages on the sea and the hillsides. Our destination is Punat today which is partway down the coast of Croatia on KrK island. The hotel dates back to the 1850's and was once a Bishop's residence and has been converted to a very nice hotel with restaurant. It is walking distance to the village which is a destination point for people with yachts. There were at least 500 berths in the Marina by the hotel. We visited the town of Vrbnik which was very old and picturesque. Built on a hillside with narrow walkways leading to an old church. Stopped for a glass ... read more
