The bus from Dubrovnik to Split was in the pouring rain. The weather was up and down, but made for some amazingly beautiful and dramatic coastline with the grey and brooding sky interspersed with the odd shaft of sunlight as the clouds moved out to sea. Part of the coastline actually goes through Bosnia & Herzegovena so technically I managed to do another country in 20 mins. You pull up at the border crossing on the bus while they wander through have a look at the passport then drive for 20 mins and do it all again. My biggest complaint was no stamps in the passport! Eventually hit Split and found more private accommodation before wandering off to explore the old city and the Citadel. So many cities provide you with a walking tour so you ... read more

This is just going to be a very quick summary of my first couple of days in Croatia since I am still on the road. Day 1: SUNDAY 28. The flight was at 6am from Gatwick so in true fashion I let someone talk me into cancelling my hostel and instead go out for a few drinks. Got a taxi to the airport which was actually quite cheap although I arrived quite early. Slept pretty much the whole way on the plane though which was a distinct advantage! Woke up briefly as we were flying over the alps and took some piccies. Arrived in Split at about 9:30am and wandered outside to find the local bus which proved slightly difficult because it wasnt really signposted. Ran into an English guy (Neil) who was also looking and ... read more

DAY 3: SPLIT TO DUBROVNIK Woke up again relatively early to discover lousy weather so changed my plans slightly. I was going to have a beach day on an island but with cloudy overcast looking weather that clearly wasnt going to work. So I headed to Dubrovnik instead. On the way I got to go through my first border crossing, into Bosnia. Quite interesting, they basically did a passport check by getting on the bus but that was it. No stamp no visa, nothing. The they did the same when we left. Had about a half hour stop in Bosnia too but it was a road side stop so not that interesting. Arrived into Dubrovnik at around 2pm I Guess. I didnt have a hostel booking so just tagged along with Neil and they had extra ... read more

Well after a 7-hour overnight train from Venice to Zagreb, we tried to rest/sleep on the floor at the train station as it was 4.30 and our train was not going to leave until 6.50am. Zagreb, maybe a nice place to stay for a day or two, but due to our short time restraints we where keen to do all the travelling we could to get to Split ASAP for a bit of a chill. The train station was not much chop with little seating and being asked to leave certain areas of the station where sleeping was not permitted. The trip to Split was neither here nor there. I had my book to read, but Girvo was short of power on his ipod and probably did not kill the time as easily as I did. ... read more

Belgrade to Bar, Montengro was a long, lonely overnight train - lucky I was asleep most of the night except for another border crossing and the last wonderful early morning bit coming down through the mountains, glorious. I discovered that it is possible to grab passport, roll over hand, get back, roll back and resleep with minimal fuss. Just takes a few weeks on the road to redevelop the sleepability away from the comforts of my own bed. The overnight trains are wonderful if you book a sleeper car - the ultimate luxury of being able to climb into bed and sleep horizontal means the train get's my vote over a bus anyday. I don't care if they take an extra couple of hours (and in this part of Europe they are quite slow) I'll take ... read more

Darvin Wrote: Considering we had not expected to even visit two of the three former Yugoslavian states that we did, this most recent part of our journey has been both enjoyable and also very sobering. When we were looking to try and find our way from Greece to Croatia the only cheap way to go was to fly into Belgrade, the capitol of Serbia (and at one time the capitol of the former Yugoslavian Federation), and then make our way by bus through Sarajevo, the capitol of Bosnia-Herzegovina, finally arriving to the town of Split in Croatia. The scars of the war that broke out in this area from 1991-1995, and then the 1999 Kosovo conflict in Serbia are all still very easy to see and for the most part what I have gathered is that ... read more

Left Cavtat this morning - destination unknown. We took the main motorway through central Croatia. It is a beautiful superhighway. The average speed is about 140-150 kph with others travelling much faster. The route is not very exciting except for many tunnels one of which was 6K long thrugh a mountain. Near the upper part of Croatia we turned left away from Zagreb and headed for the coast and around Rijeka out to a small coastal town called Rovinj. Very picturesque but we did not arrive until later (after about 9 hours of driving) so we settled for dinner on a terrace overlooking the harbour. We are staying at a small Pansion - our first stab at not having a booking ahead of time. Tomorrow we hope to explore some caves just across the border in ... read more

Hi everyone, we are now back to work and real life... Back since over a month ;( It is far beyond time to get back to our holidays and share with you some beautiful pictures of Croatia.. A country that we visited for the first time - Europe has still got surprising destinations for us ! We just loved Croatia, and regretted not to be able to stay longer and see more... It is a country where you've got a bit of everything: beautiful beaches (with pebbles and rocks, careful!), beautiful islands, nice little villages on hills. If you're fond of cultural discovery or if you like chillin' out on the beach and just do nothing : Croatia is a place to discover! We spent a week in the Istrian region, on the eastern side of ... read more

Dubrovnik & Split I stayed on in Dubrovnik after my sailing trip for a few days more. This town had more to offer and see, it is really what they say it to be the Pearl of The Adriatic. - Protected by magnificent walls, surrounding lime stone streets, weathered down over the years by foot traffic to exude a pearly light in the sun and artifical light at night. The main predestrian thoroughfare (The Stradun) is a melange of cafe shop's with outstanding monuments at either end. The steep stepped streets leading off the main street harbor a diverse range of bars, cafes and restaurants. "Fresh" was one of thoses bars attracting many travelers and is where I met Alanna, a Melbournite from Glen Iris, quickly developing a freindship we became close drinking buddies over the ... read more
