So the Sunday morning train to Sibenik - again the train didn't leave on time, but we made the journey without any problems changing once at a tiny village called Perkovic. We arrived in Sibenik hoping to find a tourist office to find accommodation (Sibenik wasn't even mentioned in the lonely planet) but they were all closed. Instead, we saw a sign to a hotel that was way out of our budget, and asked for information there. The lady directed us a 30min walk uphill to a hostel that she wasn't convinced was even open, but we set off with a photocopy of her map. Luckily, just as we were beginning the trek Alice and Mim were approached by a lady offering an apartment for 10 pounds per person per night, and it was just 5mins ... read more

And so began the part of the trip I was most looking forward to: Croatia! As we have spent such a long time here, we've split (ahahahah unintentional pun there) the blogs up into separate bits to make it more digestible for you, fine readers. Alors. The journey to Split was another quite tricky one - we got up ridiculously early in Budapest to get the first bus at 5.15am back down the hill to the town, where we took another bus to the station. Unfortunately, the ticket system on the bus is a bit weird, you have to buy a booklet of tickets from a news stand before you get on, and James had accidentally misplaces those tickets. WIthout a news stand at the top of the hill, we had no option but to fare ... read more

There are ten of very similar hills in the hinterland of Poreč which are not higher than 100 meters. The peak of each is flat, and this points to the previous existence of settlements on the plateau (proved by many remains, which are known to belong to the civilizations before the antique period). These two hills are the most important ones: Mordele and Picugi. 1.Mordele The chain Mordele consists of three hills: Mordela, Mali Sveti Anđeo and Veliki Sveti Anđeo. The oldest findings date 4 000 years back and confirm that this civilization dates from the times before Christ. What tribe is that? We have no idea. They used the area where Poreč is located today as their port, but the settlements were, for safety reasons, more remote, on high grounds to ensure good visibility (from ... read more

I arrived in Split on a bus from Mostar, and was significanty whacked after the 6-hour ride, and the annoying border controls, where I was the only one who had to get off the bus for a closer inspection of my passport and luggage. Dodging the hostel touts, I made my way to the old town, where I had booked a cheap place with excellent reviews. I think the time in South America had given me a healthy rudeness facing unwanted attention, so I got into the habit of completely ignoring anybody who tried to sell me stuff or get me to stay at their overpriced shitholes. The hostel was the cheapest option I could get in this very touristy city, and I was lucky enough to get a room for myself, for there were also ... read more

In my frequent joyriding along Istrian shores, Rabac mostly played the role of a place for swimming (in the summer), for walks (in other seasons), and sometimes to hang out (when I was younger). It takes about 15 minutes by car from my house in Rijeka to Rabac, so that is one of my closest destinations on the Istrian peninsula when I wish for a day of lying on the beach, bathing and other similar (in)activities. Rabac is the only place on the eastern Istrian coast that developed tourism as practically the most important economic branch the place lives on. The configuration of the shore, nature and geography have done their parts, so Rabac and its coves represent a kind of a “beach and promenade oasis”. Geographically, it is situated on Istrian peninsula, but at the ... read more

Well we have made it a little further up the Adriatic coast to Dubrovnik, Croatia "the pearl of the Adriatic" or something... What a spot! Stari Grad (old town) is a totally walled in town of narrow alleys, high staircases and old buildings... well somewhat old. the towns been around a long time, but back in the war in the 90's a lot of it was damaged or destroyed. but its been fully restored and is a tourist magnet again. even this time of year there are a few people around. i can't image how hot, crowded and generally annoying it must be in summer though. but its just great this time of year! all the houses have red clay tiles for a roof, they'er all whitish stone (whitish meaning lots are almost black with dirt), ... read more

Welp, the Croatia vs. France handball game didn't go as planned as the damn French ruined it by winning the Championship. We had a nice flight from Dubrovnik to Zagreb, took the bus back to the city center and thus began the first navigational issue we've had of the whole trip. We got into the city around 10:30 PM and took Tram 6 like instructed. Oh, but not before being harassed by a hammered Croatian who spoke no english and smelled of vodka. Mike's second "friend" of the trip. Well, apparently we didn't get the #6 and we ended up in a PRETTY shady area of town. Add in the thousands of angry rioters/fans from the handball loss and it made for an interesting trip. Oh, and the snow - did I mention that? Anyways, for ... read more

The bus trip from Zagreb to Dubrovnik was long and windy, it took us through ancient mountain ranges and along a beautiful coast for the better part of the trip. We even passed through Bosnia briefly due to the region surrounding Dubrovnik being isolated from the rest of Croatia. Most of the people on the bus were locals but we could hear a few British accents sitting up ahead of us. We would later find out that the Brits are crazy about Dubrovnik and easily made up a good 90% of the one hostel in the town. As soon as we passed the border into Croatia (Dubrovnik) again we knew we were in for a treat. This pristine coastline was bordered by beautiful tuscan style villas and more modern developments for the rich. Yachts and cruise ... read more

Croatians are a proud people with many traditions and an impressive nationalistic fighting spirit which has set them apart from many of the other countries in the region. Since the soviets left the region they carved themselves a nation against many overwhelming odds. We caught a plane from one of the lesser known airports just outside of London. Will and I had arrived at the airport 7 hours early for what we claimed was a most unecessary precaution, but in reality we didn't want to fork out 30 quid for half a night at a scummy east London hostel. I slept on the floor of the airport wrapped in my sleeping bag for lack of better options whilst Will chatted with Russian student girl and a large Irish African who gave a whole new meaning to ... read more
