Zadar is an ancient Roman town and is still very well preserved to this day. We stayed at the only hostel, a soul-less, hospital-like YHA about a half hour walk out of town. We try to avoid the Youth Hostels but we were stuck this time. During the day we made the walk into town along the waterfront. It was a beautifully sunny day where we even took our coats off while walking around town. That's saying something for the middle of November. The old town is on a peninsula that makes it feel like an island. The city is still walled in by the ancient Roman wall and most of the streets are pedestrianized. There was a great market but we didn't have a kitchen at the hostel so we just sat and had a ... read more

The trip straight from Ljubljana to Zadar, Croatia was a long one so we split it up and stayed in the capital city, Zagreb. We'd heard that Zagreb was not known for it's beauty but it was a great surprise. We stayed on the outskirts of the old town. We were 2 of only 5 people staying at the hostel the entire two nights we were there. This is starting to become a theme as we are right in the middle of the low season. Nevertheless, they had wireless internet so we could watch BC lose to Calgary in the West Final. Yippee! We spent the only full day we had in the city wandering around in search of the old town. Much of it is surrounded by ugly communist block style apartements, but the preserved ... read more

Sad goodyes at Haris Youth Hostel in Sarajevo, took tram #1 to the bus station, i could not find it at first then a lady told me it is just behind the post office building, bought my ticket for 12:30pm bus. The trip takes 8 1/2 hours. I fell asleep quickly in the bus. 2 hours later I woke up to some interesting scenery, we passed through dozens of towns the route takes us all the way north to the Srpska Republic territory into Banja Luka, One town had a billboard that say they are a UNESCO heritage site candidate, cant remember the name. The scenery up north is quite amazing, we started going through mountain passes, following a stagnant blue gren river. Then before crossing this metal bridge we stopped for customs on the bOsnian ... read more

The scenic drive from Kotor to Dubrovnik kept me from falling asleep in the bus. When we arrived in Dubrovnik we saw an impressive site of the old city from the top of the hill where the road goes down to the harbor, QE II docked at the harbor. I had listed down the possible accomodations in town, Fresh sheets in the heart of the old town being my priority as i called them and told them i was coming though did not book online, lots of people offered me rooms right away, quite a contrast from kotor where no one was around, i told them i have a place already then this old man approached me with photos and books showing off his GH, called Begovic located in suburban Lapad, was not interested but this ... read more

No-one from either city will thank me for saying it, but Zagreb is a bit like Belgrade. No eyes are going to pop out of their sockets at the array of architecture, which here is largely grey and plastered in graffiti. Historic sights are few, but Zagreb is home to some great cafes, clubs and bars which more than made up for it. The train journey from Mostar was a draining 13 hours long. Fortunately we had paid extra to go first class, and had a compartment to ourselves for more or less the entire journey. We were tired and hungry on our arrival at Zagreb station, where we were taken to our apartment by Miroslav, whose voice sounded amusingly similar to Arold Schwarzenegger's. I was slightly peturbed that there was no actual bedroom, just two ... read more

Sorry not to have written in forever. The internet is extremely expensive around here. We are staying in the motorhome of a German traveler on the outskirts of Dubrovnik, a beatiful city. We have many many stories to tell and have met some great people. Thanks for your interest, and if we get to a place with cheaper internet we will update more. Tonight we go to Montenegro and then soon after we finally get to Bosnia. I can't wait! ... read more

17th October by Blake We stayed in Labin in Croatia. It was really windy and really cold. We didn’t have any electricity at the camp ground. We didn’t have hot showers and no lights in the toilet. There was a straight down hill what we was biking down. I went so fast that I fell off. I didn’t hurt myself. There were heaps of olive trees everywhere. Dad picked some and tasted it. He said it was disgusting. Then we went for a walk to look at the place. We went to a beach I saw two crabs. Mason killed one by accident. We went home after that and Mum and Anton made gnocchi and fudge cake for dinner. We played loser (card game) and I was the champion for most of the game. In the ... read more

The smell of salt water & fish is definitely the first thing that springs to mind to describe the air along the coast of Croatia. It was warm and sunny (almost hot), and so very different to the weather that I had left behind in smelly soggy London. A week spent exploring Croatia and its islands sounded to me like a perfect place for a holiday...and it was! I arrived in Split, a small city, which was originally built around the Diocletian palace (a palace/fort built for the retired Roman emperor Diocletian) where the locals sought refuge centuries ago. Wandering the historic center of Split you can still clearly see the Roman walls, squares, and temples. Recently, the main street or centre walkway of Split was fixed up and modernized...much to the locals disapproval but I ... read more

Our first 9 day travel week was an overall success. The trip started with a required 5 day excursion to Croatia. We went with the whole castle program. We spent two nights in Trogir, a small walled city in Croatia. The history here was fascinating, the city which was originally founded by the Greeks in 300 BC has been under dozens of different rulers including the Venicians, Hapsburgs, and Slavs... During our two days here we got tours of the city from teachers from Emerson. The city was very beautiful, and surprisingly not as touristy as other places we've visited. For once the conversion rate was in our favor, so we could afford to eat well... Most restaurants entrees cost about 2-5 euro. img=http://i283.photobucket.com/al... read more
