Back in beautiful Boquete to fulfill one of our trips missions, volunteer work!! After talking to the owner of Spanish by the River in Boquete, while out in Bocas, we decided to head back in this direction to teach English at an after school program called Casa Esperanza, and for Adam to take some Spanish classes. Casa Esperanza is a program that serves the indigenous Ngobe Bugle population of Panama. It is an after school program for children who may otherwise be unable to attend school due to insufficient family funds. It was set up to decrease the level of child labor in Panama, and allow these amazing kids the chance to get an education. The program provides transportation to and from school, home, and Casa Esperanza. They offer classes in health, psychology, government, and ... read more

After La Tortuga Feliz, I caught up with Nathalie from the project, in San Jose. We took a long, windy, but beautiful ride up to Monteverde, where we (or at least I) screamed through 15 ziplines over the cloud forest, and I took the plunge on a Tarzan swing. We then caught up with 2 more volunteers, Patrick and Galina, in Arenal, where we went to the Baldi Thermal Springs. It was part of a tour - go to Volcan Arenal to see red hot lava pour down the side, then a relaxing dip in the springs. Unfortunately the weather was totally crap, pouring with rain... so the guides suggested that we go to the springs first and come back to the volcano later, when hopefully the weather had cleared up. My personal opinion was that ... read more

On a recent trip to Alajuela we discovered Colinas Del Poas, a beautiful place to enjoy a Canopy tour, kayak, fish for rainbow trout and have a delicious meal. We were doing Bill's favorite thing, exploring different roads when we came across this place. If you're vacationing and don't have a lot of time I'd highly recommend a trip here as you can do the ziplines and visit Poas Volcano all in the same day. There's a Mirador restaurant as you head back down into Alajuela we've eaten at previously that gives you stunning central valley views at night. Kidney Stone In Haiti!! It all started out on Sunday April 29th. I was feeling great when I woke up. Got up early, enjoying the sun rising to my east, but this day was to take an eventful turn. At around 8am we took a short car ride to get some fuel and this is when things started to go down hill!! At first, it felt like a bad cramp, so I decided to return back on board to try to do my business, in the hopes that this would eliminate the mystery cramp!! Man was I wrong! As the pain struck with avenges, I laid in our bunk trying to find a comfortable position for this pain to pass!! No way! Every moment that passed the pain got more painful with no relief in ... read more

Here´s the update: Cesar has decided to take an extended weekend without any of us knowing. There are rumours that his mother is very sick. I had my class write ¨What I have learned in Grade 3 so far¨ and got some interesting responses. New approach to class (taken from Meg who took it from Donray). Every class is worth 8 marks for participation. Every student starts with 8 points. If they do not have the homework finished from the day before they lose 2 points. If they are not prepared with the proper materials for class they lose 2 points. During the class if they are doing anything they shouldn´t be doing (chewing gum, talking, out of their seat, etc.) they lose another point. EVERY class will have these marks. This new participation mark will ... read more

Well, well, well, I have managed to suvive the ordial that was Newark Airport where in a hot tempered 'que conductor' (actual title) came very close to driving me completely insane with her constant shouting of orders. She very closly resembled some kind of South American terrior. Following very little sleep indeed and very little to eat over the past few days I have found myself in a little cafe entering my very first blog. The weather here is amazing, constant and unforgiving in the most fanastic of ways. The people are kind of a mixed bag, always quick to offer help in any situation, but equally quick to ask for payment for the service! The best moments thus far have include a browse around the city on an early sunday morning with an enlightened Rasta ... read more

Yesterday, Monday, I contrived to get a spanking new passport, of this latest biometric type. Amazing, one day only. Thing is, I look like this now: img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20Solo%20Extension/5%20-%20Costa%20Rica%20Again/IMG_1876.jpg img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20Solo%20Extension/4%20-%20Nicaragua/4%20-%20San%20Juan%20del%20Sur/Imagen444.jpg My new travel-head: not really my usual style.....(but for sure I feel better than wandering around with the mohawk; to be added to an entry as I back-track this blog) img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20Solo%20Extension/5%20-%20Costa%20Rica%20Again/journo_loses_diary.jpg So I hope in the future the biometric facial chip thingumagig permits an hassle-free passage :-) I also managed to get the police report written up, and I w... read more

The Mosquito Coast...in pictures  So, we did survive our last week of the trip on the Mosquito Coast, one of the most remote areas in Central America. We should first admit that we're back at home in the comfort of our apartment, which seems like luxury after the last few days. Since we're here, and technology works a bit more quickly than it does in the internet cafes of Honduras, we thought a photo essay was in order..... Thanks to those who sent comments and emails on previous blogs - we're looking forward to catching up with everyone in person.... read more
