Today we decided to take advantage of the salon being closed on Sunday to work on the salon. Because Dorita (the nanny/housekeeper) has Sunday as a day off Maria came along with us. We at first went to local hardware store to pickup some things we needed for both the house and salon renovations. We spent the day working on the 3 nail stations by rearranging the electrical wires and power bars so there are no more wires on the floor. Mimi climbed on roof to change the floodlights to those with motion detection. I assisted her because of the position of the lights it was easier to work two. We also added hooks to the side of the stations so clients can hang their purses and Maria helped us on that one. Around 2 or ... read more

I am not traveling per say that much. Mostly spending time with Mimi and going to her nail salon. The first thing we needed to do is go to a friend's of Mimi's auto body shop to have the glass replaced. We first drove to the salon to get the Trooper. Then I followed Mimi from the salon to the auto body shop in the Trooper while she drove the Aveo Chevrolet. On the way there some dick head braked to heard with broken brake lights just while Mimi was looking back to see if I was still behind her. She avoided just in time hitting the car ahead of her by turning to the right hard almost flipping the car. We made it to the auto body shop alive and then left to go back ... read more

This country is amazing. I'm slipping into another zone. I arrived in Guatemala city, spent the night and another day. The poverty and the shock of walking through the streets of an unindustrialized city, hmm, what to say. It's the biggest city in Central America, yet it's so incredibly poor. I walked through hilled calles of adobe dwellings, peaked in doorways where mayan women mixed corn masa in barrels. In others, families would purchase baskets of dough, load them in taxis (not many can afford cars) to transport to family run restaurants or street food carts. Luckily I met a French man whom I toured around with while in Guatemala city, otherwise I'd be chained to my hotel room after 6. At sundown the streets are dark and desolate and without a chaperone I would have ... read more

Where do I begin my adventure? On July 4th I met an amazing lady from Guatemala on Skype. We have been talking 4 to 5 hours a day ever since. Finally I was able to make plans to come to see her. I had made reservations for the 29th. However I told her I would be coming on the 30th. I had planned to surprise her with the help of her daughter Lissy (19 years old). The plan was Lissy would invite her mother for a special announcement dinner (hinting but not saying directly that she was pregnant or that she was getting married). In the weeks before the trip I had to move from one apt to another in the same block. The night before I had to be out of my old apt and ... read more

well i had one of the best weekends of my life. i missed saturday´s trip to santa clara with the school because i overslept but i ended up going with alejandro on sunday. it was a conscious decision to oversleep. some nights i only get a few hours of sleep because the street dogs start barking around 1AM and don´t stop until 5ish. there are hundreds of dogs and they make a lot of noise. friday night it rained and all the dogs were hiding out and being quite. so it was great to rest up. alejandro came to san pedro on saturday. he met me at d´noz, where i was studying. we stayed there and watched napoleon dynamite...they offer free movies on a big screen. a few bars and restaurants in san pedro do this....it´s ... read more

Hola friends and family. We have arrived safely. Our travel went smoothly, besides Wendy spraying blueberry yogurt over her shirt and face on the plane and me spilling salsa on my shoes and backpack. My first spoken Spanish words have been very simple, but I have been able to understand what people are asking me, in general. "Hola," "gracias," and "si" have been my words of choice! Body language gets you far and people have been very nice. Upon arrival, Wendy and I made an immediate stop at the banos (bathrooms). Then we exchanged money and walked outside to find our driver. Immediately, I noticed that we were obviously the minority in this country, but people didn't stare too hard at us. Victor, a driver from our hotel, picked us up from the airport in Guatemala ... read more
