well i had one of the best weekends of my life. i missed saturday´s trip to santa clara with the school because i overslept but i ended up going with alejandro on sunday. it was a conscious decision to oversleep. some nights i only get a few hours of sleep because the street dogs start barking around 1AM and don´t stop until 5ish. there are hundreds of dogs and they make a lot of noise. friday night it rained and all the dogs were hiding out and being quite. so it was great to rest up.
alejandro came to san pedro on saturday. he met me at d´noz, where i was studying. we stayed there and watched napoleon dynamite...they offer free movies on a big screen. a few bars and restaurants in san pedro do this....it´s really cool. after the movie, we shared a bottle of wine that alejandro brought. when we were in flores, we had an amazing bottle of wine....called frontier. *i highly recommend it* he was able to locate it in antigua and brought it with him on saturday. yummy. we went out to dance salsa but they were not playing salsa music at the club. so
we decided to meet up with some of my friends. alejandro was glad to meet my friends and vice versa. we all had a great time.
on sunday we rented a motorbike and drove up one of the mountains to santa clara. santa clara offers a great view of the lake and i took some great pics...will post later. it felt so wonderful to drive up the moutain on the bike...open air....sharing the bike with my gorgeous friend...staring out at the beautiful lake. it was another...¨wow...this is my life!!!¨ moment. somebody pinch me!!!!!!!!!! 😊
right now i am in guatemala city waiting for my ¨family¨. they are in the doctor´s office with my ¨sister¨....she has been sick for a week so they had to come into the city to visit with a good doctor. medical care is scarce in san pedro. i needed to pick up my passport so i took the trip with them. i´m so glad i did. as i´m describing this day, keep in mind that my family members are traditional mayans. they are in their traditional mayan clothing....colorful skirts and blouses. it is so cool to be with them in the city. the kids
have only been out of san pedro a few times so they are amazed!! we went to a modern mall for lunch and my family was so amazed with the technology. my ¨father¨ was fascinated by the buzzer that sounds when you walk into a store....the sound that notifies the store employees that a new customer has entered. so he kept walking back and forth to make it go off. then he would slowly move his hand into the space and wait for it to ¨catch him¨. it was driving the rest of the family crazy but i was laughing hysterically. then we went to the escalators. my house mom´s sister was petrified of it...it took like 3 minutes for her to get on. the kids loved it...they kept running in the opposite direction. too cute!!!!!!
i did learn today that i have a bit of a problem. to get out of guatemala i need to have an entrance stamp on my passport. since i lost my old passport, i have no stamps on my new one. i went to immigration to see if they could help me and they said the only way i can get a stamp
road...
if you look closely, you can see the zig-zag road that we (alejandro) drove the bike up... is if i have a police report. which i do not have. and the only way to get one is to lie and say my passport was stolen. which means i have to make up an entirely false story. i´m not sure what to do. maybe i will just try to exit without the entrance stamp. i met a guy in the beginning of my trip who had a problem exiting the country because of stamps. i will send him an email to see how it worked out. eeessshhhh......
so anyway....i have one more week left in san pedro. i will leave next wednesday and return to antigua. alejandro has decided to go to el salvador with me and spend the weekend. it sucks that he is not a traveller and actually has to work monday thru friday. he actually has a job...how weird!!!! lol. but anyway...i will meet him in antigua and we will drive to san salvador. it will be interesting to cross the border in a private car instead of a public bus. we will be meeting up with cami and her friends in san salvador.
as always, i will keep you all posted on my adventures.
well i should go out and check on my family because they might be ready to leave.
signing off with a big smile on my face! as kate would say.....good times!!!! love you all!

passport issues
Check to see if there is a 'Summer Institute of Linguistics' (not sure of spanish translation - instituto de linguistico, maybe?? They deal with missionaries coming in and out of the country all the time -- they are an american based organization -- that's where we stayed WAY too many years ago! anyway -- they are usually very helpful and would possibly have some suggestions or friends at immigration to give you a hand. worth the phone call, anyway! I'm sure they've had things like this happen before -- all sorts of college students, new families pass through their "portals" -- someone must have lost a passport at least once!
