Kiitokset kommenteista! Kellon ollessa paljon painuin majoituksessa suoraan nukkumaan ja aamulla sitten hetken tuuminnan tuloksena paatin hankkia halvempaa majoitusta keskeisemmalta paikalta (tam... read more

...Frightening how much can change in the flash of a second. As you noticed I did not post that last entry for almost a week. Unfortunately, last Wednesday Nov 14th a shocking and terrible thing occured...my dad was diagnosed with Leukemia and the world as I knew it changed for my family and I in the blink of an eye. My heavenly remote heavenly inn in the middle of nowhere quickly turned to hell. Being so far away from home and completely alone when I recieved such news made it even more difficult to deal with. The journey home began at sunrise Thurs am...sleep was impossible. We went down the 100+ stone steps to our dock to wait for the water taxi...a vessel designed for about 10 people. Ride began with a local mayan with a ... read more

What a way to begin the year of travel. Anytime before 8am is not good for me unless I am coming back from a blackjack table with a pocket full of greens...which has occurred in Palm Springs, Tahoe, Vegas and Montreal this year... Not bad for one year. Anyway, the early early wakeup and 2 flts gave me time to contemplate a few rules of the road for the year.... 1)NO MORE FLTS before 10am 2)DO talk to strangers 3)Pack light and then reduce by 50% 4)Never say never 5)Go local...food, music, people etc 6)Avoid long crazy bus rides 7)Do learn a few basic phrases in local language 8)Don't follow all the rules all the time I am sure I will be adding to this list but that is at least the starting point for now. ... read more

Hola! Well I finally made it after 28 hours travelling. I though I was having a heart attack in Mexico City airport but as it turns out its only a chest infection!! That airport is bigger than Cork city!! Unreal! So anyway I arrived yesterday in Guatemala City at around 3pm local time (Its 7 hours behind Ireland). Coming out of the airport was a bit of a culture shock. They dont really have a departure gate, the main exit of the airport serves as that. When I did come out there was about 300 people standing there selling all sorts of shit and other people waiting for there families. Half were Mayan and really colourfully dressed. For every one mayan guy arriving there was about 10 + family members waiting!! It was like a street ... read more

After the full day-trip to Tikal, Luke and I weren't sure that we would be up for hiking up Pacaya to see the volcano and its lava flows. So, for much of the morning on Sunday we kind of loafed around the hotel... we also walked to nearby mall also stopped by a Pizza Hut for an early lunch. Sometime in the early afternoon we began to reconsider the trip up to Pacaya... why not? We were feeling well and rested. So we headed to the lobby to talk to the concierge and/or hotel staff about catching a cab to Pacaya and back. Thankfully, we ran into one of my Spanish speaking co-workers who also happens to enjoy negotiating. :) He talked to a cab driver and went back and forth for a bit and was ... read more

What do all the guidebooks say about Guatemala? Go straight from the airport to somewhere besides Guatemala City. So, I was a little apprehensive about working in the city. However, I was in zone 10 in a nice hotel with great facilities -- and an amazing breakfast. I arrived late on Sunday night and exited the airport looking for the hotel shuttle. Just before the exit and pouring out into the street was a large crowd of people awaiting arrivals or looking for their ride. After a brief shuttle ride I arrived at The Westin Camino Real. And - wow - it was cool. Wonderful artwork, architecture, and it even smelled great. After checking-in at the desk, one of the hotel staff walked by and offered me a choice of hibiscus juice or cinnamon tea. Yeah, ... read more

Our tour finished today! One month of sharing a room with a stranger with crazy habits is finally over. I've been ready for this tour to finish for about a week. Four weeks of ruin after ruin is heavy stuff. A change of scene in Honduras is just what I need. After saying goodbye to the people I've spent most of my time with for the past four weeks, I took a shuttle to Guatemala City. It's labelled as a dangerous city but driving through it, it looks like any other Latin American capital city. I'm happy to be back in a hostel environment -- I miss doing my own laundry! -- and the hostel I'm at is wonderful (Hostel los Lagos). It's close to the airport but when I asked the owner (an older couple) ... read more

Our travel to Guatemala went just as planned. It is really only 7 hours of flying plus a 2 hour layover in Dallas on the way down. We landed in Guatemala City at about 8pm on the 8th and stayed the night at an airport hotel because they had a shuttle for us. It is a good option for a quick overnight with a local feel and free breakfast. The morning of the 9th, Hugo Suarez of Expeditions Guatemala picked us up and delivered us to our house in Antigua. Last year when we came to visit, we stayed in the same neighborhood so we knew roughly where we’d be but we hadn’t seen this particular house before. It is really terrific with 4 bedrooms a garden that is inside the walls of the house and ... read more

Dear friends, You would not believe how the last twenty-four hours have been for us. Earlier this week we decided to go to Tikal along with other students from the language school. Tikal is one of the most famous Mayan archaelogical sites in Central America. We paid to reserve our spot on the trip, got packed up yesterday between the end of class and our departure time, then met the group at the school to leave. The school had reserved a private tour bus (one with about 20 seats) for the trip. Every seat was full, which is pretty normal for stuff like this. Sarah and I sat in the second to last row. There was a fair amount of construction on the highway, so it took us quite a while to get down the road. ... read more
