Well, its Thursday and i´m finally done with regstering for classes (i hope). The regstering process has not been hard but rather time consuming. Im afraid i haven't seen any porcupines lately nor have i been able to surf here in san jose (its in the middle of the country) but i´m sure it'll pick up once school starts. I have definatley noticed more and more students around especially on the calle amargura (a street similar to 4th ave in tucson or mill avenue in tempe). Just out of considence (well, maybe i planned it) i live just a stones throw away from the calle that is always packed at night. Granted it doesnt have a bison witches but is entertaing nonetheless. To everyone, thankyou for your emails and I let you all know about my ... read more

HOLA TODO! Well, well, well.... I've been at my turtle project for almost two weeks exactly, completly cut off from civilization. I bused into a small town called Batann which is on the Caribe cost right north of Limon. In Batann, Paul who runs La Tortuga Feliz, picked me up. We took a cab about 30 mins, and then a boat for another 45 until we ended up at a little island that really only an island because its surrounded by rivers. Only 35 people or so live on this island, no electricity, no stores, nothing to really do but dig a HUGE fucking hole for the turtle egg hatchery. It was hotter than ass the first day I was there, but it rained almost everyday since I got there. We were actually trapped on the ... read more

So I met my friend Mike at the airport in San Jose, and we took a rickety old bus (which simply means it has character) to San Isidro for the night. Then we woke up the next morning with the sun at 6 am, showered, and took a bus all the way down to Puerto Jiminez, to meet up with some other people. While on the bus awaiting departure, a man selling peanuts continually tried to get us to buy from him. We told him we didn't want any, and then as I was watching him interact with other people, I had a change of heart. So I bought some of his peanuts. He was a very friendly man, and he let me take his picture.... read more

Well we're leaving the beach tomorrow after a little over a week soaking up the rays. I'm currently in tamarindo with will, karin, and lucelena. For a group of strangers (all students except lucelena who teaches English) we get along great and have become very close. I loved the surfing here. The waves are great for the beginner but at the same time satisfying for the novice surfer. We also went on a nature trip and saw monkeys, porcupines, crocodiles and a plethora of birds. I hope all is well and i´ll talk to you all later. nick --for all the k-sigs..what happened to paul??-- ... read more

Well, we missed the bus. In an attempt to go to puntarenas we kinda arrived a little later than planed and it just happened to be the last bus out of Jaco... And as four Americans (somewhat lost in CR) we did what any normal person would do in this situation. ----went skinny dipping---- nah, I'm just kidding but it would have been a cool thing to do. Instead we decided to stay another night in a lovely cabina right on the beach with a bar (for some malt beverages and darts). From there, the following day, we would start our long and arduous journey to a place called Tamarindo. A journey that parallels that of finding nemo in that there are two of us (myself-which i consider myself the dad) and Will (a great guy ... read more

So we left yesterday to a beach two hours away without any reservations made nor any exact idea where we were going. The two hour bus ride was interesting and filled with an eclectic group of people, and old lady selling weird books, a young man selling god knows what, and we'll just say some people that hadn't taken a shower in a while. As we drove into Jaco, the four of us stood out like any other tourists and first, (in great tourist fashion) asked where the beach was instead of where we could find a hotel. To us, the beach could have been our bed for the night (we had our priorities We found a cheap cabina right on the beach with a bar that resembled Manny's in puerto penasco for those of you ... read more

Hi to all, I know that it has been a while since i have written but i have been quite busy here. The past few days have been very 'cultural' for me. On Monday we went to a place where there was live Arabic music accompanied by a few belly dancers. The place had the ambiance of an old jazz bar lit with few lites and covered with art that only those with an open mind can interpret. I had a few Belgium beers there and with 8.8 percent alcohol i could say that if i didn´t stop iI'msure i would have ended up being one of those belly dancers. Yesterday we went to a Lebanese where they can 'read your coffee it was similar to palm reading but different because the owner of the restaurant ... read more

I've been talking to many of you over the past few days and the topic of packing tips has been a popular one. If you have suggestions for what shoes to bring, what types of clothing work best, etc., please post them here for all to see! Thanks, Kristin PS Only 26 days until we depart!... read more

Well today I registered for classes and I have to wait until the 23rd of February to see if I got the classes I wanted. I would say that the system is semi-archaic. Everything is done by scantron and the system of allocating classes is much different from the states. 1st eachstudent is given a ranking based on their GPA (1-10), those students that have a higher ranking have priority in getting the classes they want. Tonight I'm going to 'the jazz cafe' to see belly dancers and listen to Arabic music. I'm not exactly sure how I said I would go but I'm sure it will be a new experience. The food here has been good-great. Rice and beans are a few of the main dishes that seemed to be served at every meal. I'm ... read more

Very long day today. I got up about 4:45 to get to a bus this morning at 5:15. Eventhough it was early, it was nice that I didnt have to sweat my nads off. I fell asleep for 15 mins on the ferry and then for about 35 on the bus from Puntarenas to San Jose. I got off the bus I think about on time (no one has any idea what street is which because none of them are labeled). I jumped in a cab and came to Pangea Hostel which seems pretty nice. Free internet, yadda yadda yadda.... While trying to find a place to eat from my guide book, I found this little Peruvian cafe and grabbed some lunch, and it was wonderful! The best fish I may have had in my whole ... read more
