We had a very early start to get the 6am bus to Sixaola. While we were having a cup of coffee in the bus station a bird flew over us and dropped a load on Hannah. We couldn't believe a bird could hold so much poo and that it could smell so bad!! Needless to say Hannah was not amused! And to add insult to injury we had to pay for toilet roll when we went to try to clean her up!! The trip down to Sixaola was OK. Passed through lots of jungle and when we got to the Caribbean side thare were acres of bananas. They wrap the bunches in blue bags when they are small and they grow into the bag - so all you see are banana trees with blue bags hanging ... read more

I found an Internet Cafe full of kids playing Counterstrike!! Now I feel like I{m at home in Spain! Monday was the longest day - the flights were OK but we were really wrecked by the time we arrived here. The Hotel is lovely - the Vida Tropical in Alejuela. It{s a real relaxed place. But we will be on the road again tomorrow - the bus leaves San Jose at 6am for Sixaola. Then we have to cross the border into Panama. So we should arrive in Bocas del Toro by late afternoon. I have already spent some time hanging in the hammock at the Vida Tropical. It{s a lovely way to spend a bit of time. Next report will be from Bocas del Toro. ... read more

Arrived in Costa Rica this morning, in San Jose at 4 AM after a 15 hour bus ride from Panama City. The bus ride was a pain in my ass! Well, not so much the bus ride but the border. It was hell compaired to the border on the Caribean side. I counted, and I had my passport checked over 9 times. NINE! ACK! We also had to have our luggage searched several times which meant so much waiting for the whole bus to get everything in order. Yikes! Porbally a 2 hour ordeal as opposed to the simple 30 minutos at the other border. It might have been less annoying at the border if the guy sitting next to me on the bus wasnt constantly getting all up in my nut space (Morgan). Everytime hed ... read more

After an early morning hike in Manuel Antonio National Park which included sightings of monkeys, spiders and rare birds, we boarded the bus for the return trip to San Jose. We stopped for lunch in the beach town of Jaco and enjoyed our last time near the ocean. The evening brought our farewell diner. We were treated to entertainment by members of the group. Marie shared an original number, "The 8 Days of Costa Rica". Kate played David Letterman with the top 10 reasons Cobbers have more fun in Costa Rica and the top 10 Ronaldisms. Don and Bill provided a skit demonstrating all they had learned from our Ronald and Alex. And, we thanked them for the amazing tour of this beautiful country with a setting of We Wish You a Merry Christmas set to ... read more

Buenos Dias everyone! So after a week of intensive studying in Heredia it was about time I went to see other parts of the country, and what could be better than a weekend by the beach?!!! So after our exam testing our Spanish level, 6 of us and "tour guide" Gerry (a Costa Rican, aka "Tico") set off for Manuel Antonio, a beach resort/national park on the Pacific Coast. We stopped off at a bridge on the way where we saw about 20 crocodiles just lazing on their little island under the bridge!! (See the pictures.)We arrived at our sweet little hotel "Los Almendros" around 5pm and went straight to the beach which was a 3 minute walk away. The sea water was nice and warm and the waves were huge, there were several surfers which ... read more

After many days of scheduled activities, today was free to spend as we wished. Many decided to explore the nearby town of Quepos for some shopping followed by an afternoon at the beach. The beach was lovely - hot sand and lots of sun with Manuel Antonio National Park next door. The tide was coming in, so we enjoyed watching the surfers ride the waves. Later this evening, there was a synchronized swimming show at our resort pool. Special thanks to the lighting technicians:) and resort staff for providing background music. The audience was also very gracious. Dinner included a special celebration for Marie's birthday and dancing demonstrations by our guide, Ronald, and driver, Alex. After dinner, a few from the group hiked down to the beach to the local disco to experience some Costa Rican ... read more

From one volcanic situation to another. We started our day on the slopes of an active volcano we had no idea what was in store for us that day. Just outside of La Fortuna, on the slopes of Volcán Arenal we awoke in hopes of seeing the lava on the side of the volcano, as luck would have it however the top was encased in clouds and we were able to see nothing. We had quite the drive to make that day, our destination was the high cloud forests of Monteverde. Boarding our little tour bus our group of 22 made our way around Laguna de Arenal, stopping for a breaks in Nueva Arenal and Tilarán. At the second stop we were warned that we should take a pit stop and stock up on snacks if ... read more

“You want?” The clerk held up plastic. It was a bag, like any other, commonly seen blowing down a street or swept to the side, submerged in the gutters. “No thanks. I have my own here. Reusable.” I lifted the backpack to the checkout counter. “¡Pura Vida!” he said. ¡Pura Vida! Costa Rica’s signature of an eco-friendly consciousness. Heard everywhere, ¡Pura Vida! expresses the pure life, a worry-free contentment, a cure within society. Within the two mountainous settlements of Santa Elena and Monteverde, ¡Pura Vida! is practiced and contained like an abecedarian lesson, honored as an idolatry of the human Soul. From organic produce, to conservation efforts and eco-tourism, the small-town communities present a choice; the ¡Pura Vida! reality representing Life’s diverse beauty. “¡Pura Vida!” I replied, placing the fresh mangoes, mushroom... read more

Buenos Dias everyone!! My first email from Heredia in Costa Rica.......I arrived on Sunday after a long, long journey with a 5 hour stop in Atlanta. My Tico dad and brother Erick picked me up from the airport. I really got thrown in the deep end, no speaking English, just Spanish. I mostly just said "uh Si Si, hmmm un poco....". As it was quite late and I had to be at school at 7.30 the next morning I went straight to my room. My room is an outhouse in the garden which is filled with beautiful colorful flowers and plants. After seeing a lizard and cockroach in the first minute I decided it might be worth the trouble to put up my hammock which I´d bought with my mom the day before!!(thank god we did ... read more

Today we visited the cloud forest from above...what an experience. You can see the group here, all smiles following their adventure zipping by cable through the cloud forest. Another traveler will share more thoughts about this experience in a later posting. A part of the group also toured the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve and were lucky to see white faced monkeys swinging from the trees. It was an active day and all of us will certainly have many stories to share when we return. See the gallery for more pictures!... read more
