Well, I'm trying this new online diary so that all of you can login and see what I'm up to. It has been one week and I'm slowly adjusting to my new environment. Everything, and i mean everything moves at a slow pace here. You are waiting a long time for everything and you hardly see anyone in a hurry. It isn't uncommon for people to be 30 minutes to a hour late, time is not of real importance here. Everyone here is extremely nice. You can ask anyone person here for help and they will help you without question. The university is amazing, it has 30,000 students (a few thousand less than U of A) and is located in a part of San Jose called San Pedro. There is a plethora of plant life ... read more

Liz and I hit the sack early... We woke up for the 3rd night in a row by the people next to us bangin. So Liz and I agree that if it happens tomorrow, we´re going to start clapping very loud and saying ¨Bravo, Bravo!¨. Anyway, we hiked the waterfall today and sweated our nads off... But then got in the water, and it was FREEZING!! Probally the only time I´ll be cold here... Hot Rod Johnson (Liz´s love affair) said there are some guys who just came into town from Arizona, so maybe I´ll try to find them tonight and have some good ól home state gossip! On Monday I should be heading back to San Jose and then to Tortugero for some turtle business, so I might not be able to write for a ... read more

The internet here is so slow, Im not sure it my last entry posted, or Im going crazy.... So, if its up twice, I apoligize! The days here are lazy... I got up this morning pretty early for Tico time (the phenominom of no one paying attention to the real time...) and headed to the beach. I got sand stuck in my ass really well, got a little red, headed back home... I didnt have enough money for water, but the lady I bought it from just said to come back whenever and pay her the rest... Liz lost our room key last night, so we couldnt use el bano, and so I spent a few hours with sand in my cunchata till we could get a new key. Just finished up a nice cold shower ... read more

So I try to be a student. I hung out at Spanish school for a few days. I met tons or really neat people! Smoked a joint with the oldest man on the planet (sorry mom, but its freakin Costa Rica) at my hostel. But Yesterday, this girl Liz and Jonica were heading to the beach (a five hour combined travel with bus, taxi, bus, ferry, bus), and about ten minutes before I left Liz said I should go, and I thought about it and just went. Payed for my two days at spanish school, packed all my shit (although I left my stupid rope sandals at the hostel on accident) and we jetted out. The bus ride was bumpy, it got pretty hot, and two birds shit on Liz on the ferry. We finally got ... read more

buenas dias amigos... i hope this finds everyone doing well and having a great holiday and wrap up to 2005! i have moved on from San Juaquin de flores, traveling northwest to the towns of la fortuna, monteverde and santa elena, in the mountainous regions of the north central coast. after calling the bus department on the 23rd to ¨"confirm" that schedules were running the same for the holiday weekend (like any good little traveler would..), i rose early, said my goodbyes to the Fallas Ramos family and headed into the San Jose bus terminal to catch my direct transport to the mountains where i would spend christmas enjoying the view of volcan arenal and taking advantage of nearby hikes, rafting, and waterfalls. HA! i was soon introduced to the first (not totally unexpected) lesson of ... read more

after a few low-key, rain trodden days in la fortuna (but a fun white water rafting adventure!), i headed to the cloud forests of monteverde and santa elena. the cloud forests are rain forests in elevated regions, making them more susceptible to moisture, cloud formations, and thus creating very fertile habitats for a variety of wildlife indigenous to costa rica. The infamous quetzal and elusive golden toad top the list of things to see, as one explores the forest trails either solo or with a hired guide. there are also a ton of bird species, hummingbirds, monkeys and sloths to grab your attention (we mostly saw a ton of birds...) the other big draw to the monteverde region is the adventurous and exhilirating canopy zip line tours. literally, series of cables that are strung from the ... read more

Sunscreen Sucks!!! Well, it doesn't work apparently. Ben and I are both a bit on the lobster looking color right now. We have had three fabulous days on the beach and have been dining really well. We found a nice beach front hotel and have been reading books furiously on the beach. Went for great dinners the last two nights and little did we know, we were having dinner during a neverending happy hour where drinks were 2 for 1. Needless to say, Lauren and I were done by 9PM and wandered back home. Talk about living easy. Today we spent the day within the national park watching the monkeys swing from tree to tree. Lauren has a bump on her head from what she thinks is some sort of nut a monkey threw at her. ... read more

My first flight to LAX was on a plane the size of a pickle with wings. We sandwiched in there like tuna and the guy next to me read his news paper like he ran the place. Kinda like a certain father I know who uses his elbows at the table. My flight from LAX to Guatemala City (a stupid stop over) was a bit better, although it was like an episode from Seinfeld where Elane and Jerry get on a full flight, and Jerry goes to 1st class while Elane gets stuck sitting next to the guy with 7 bags. But, the whole flight was sportin 4.9 bags. EVERYONE. I might have been the only one. The flight gods were with me though, I got window, and no one sat in the middle between me ... read more

Well, Ben and I are now on day 5 of the holiday. After meeting up in San Jose with no problems we spent the day drinking coffee (cafe) and did a tour of a plantation (we were the only people under the age of 50 but definitely the most shaky with our over-consumption of coffee and other coffee products). We went for a great seafood dinner and met Papa Pez, the restaurant owner, who later accompanied us to the local dance club for a round of cervasas. We stayed at an incredible restored mansion-turned-hotel of a famous coffee baron in a neat part of San Jose called Bario Amon. Amazing how rich some people became by just selling a bit of java! After a well neeeded sleep we got up early and took a bus to ... read more
