After a few days of unpleasantness of varying degrees of seriousness (some of which I will relate here, other parts will go with us to the grave unless they become amusing in the far future), we are now in another paradise. The hotel Amor de Mar in Montezuma to be exact. We travelled by bus and police pickup truck and taxi and ferry and bus and mini bus from La Fortuna to Montezuma on what we found out was the Saturday of a three day weekend in Costa Rica. It was Labor Day weekend and everyone had Monday off, so lots of people were travelling. We got into Montezuma after dark, tired and hungry. Every bar and restaurant seemed to be playing different music, loudly. After a horrible dinner of was supposed to be fish in ... read more

Just a few Kilometers up the coast was the small town of Santa Teresa/Mal Pais the reason for the two names is that both towns just comprise of the beach road and they merge into each other at some point...exactly where, we are not sure. Unfortunately we jumped off the bus at the start of the one town and the Funky Monkey, where we were going to stay was at the end of the other town. We walked with full backpacks, on the dustiest road ever in 30degree heat. Can you imagine how I was bitching! We arrived after walking for nearly an hour at the Funky Monkey. We looked like two members of an African tribe who cover themselve in clay before warfare. Did I mention the 30degree heat? We had met Sam, an Australian ... read more

Well, when were in Monteverde we met a guy who had bought this T-shirt, with a cartoon depicting a scary cliff side drive, with Monteverde as the location and a slogan ´´I Survived the road to Monteverde´´ As we had arrived with the Jeep-Boat-Jeep trip we thought that maybe it was the route the local bus took to get there from La Fotuna.....because we had not experienced anything to warrent buying such a Tshirt. We soon realised that it was the route we were now travelling on to the beach! After two hours of bone jarring and a bit of cliff skirting we were so grateful to hit the tar road that would take us to Pontareus, the ferry port for the Nicoya Peninsular. We had to wait a couple of hours for the next ferry ... read more

We loved this place! So great being cooler than the beaches (never thought I would complain about being too hot!) and it was loads cooler than La Fortuna too. The Jeep-Boat-Jeep ride was most definitely worth every cent and we arrived cool, calm and collected at a wonderful hostel called Posada Elena. The area was a collection of really great activities and small industries, with a real rural village feel. The first thing you notice is the large old fashion milk tins in front of lots of driveways. We found out latter that the small farm owners milk their cows and leave the milk to be picked up by the local cheese factory to be used for producing cheese. When you buy milk in the supermarket you pour it out of a milk tin into plastic bags ... read more

Thursday 20th April - Thursday 27th April On the thursday I left my cousin Jon in Manuel Antonio and took two buses and a Ferry to the town of Montezuma which is on a peninsula on the west side of Costa Rica. The journey took around 6 hours but it wasn't too bad as it was broken up by the ferry crossing. I got off the bus in in Montezuma with two gorgeous and tall girls from Canada (Tamara and Jordan). We decided to get a room together at a sort of hostel/pension and from then on we hardley separated for a whole week! Unfortunatley I caught a stomach virus a few days earlier so wasn't really well enough to do much, luckily Tamara and Jordan were in the mood for a couple of relaxing days ... read more

Phase II was back on environmental project in Piedras Blancas but with a new group and new fellow project manager Kris. Kris is a trek leader but didn't want to do a trek all three phases. We were due to build the second accommodation cabin and continue with trail building. It was a tough phase, with some interesting characters who developed a habit of preferring sunbathing and reading their books to working... but when they applied themselves a great deal was achieved. We built the second cabin but again couldn´t paint because the generator failed to give us enough power to solder the roof. We also finished the loo, septic tank and drainage alongside the classroom and built about 300 metres of trail. The weather became more challenging as it started raining more but I had ... read more

ciao tutti! I'm hoping my exhaustion that has been building for weeks won´t make this dull and confusing. Forgive me if it does. At the moment I´m in a town called San Isidro, at the base of a mountain range called chirripo, the second tallest in central america. Tomorrow I climb for 10 hours or so, with my big bag (minus the things I left in SJ) but made up for in food supplies. Despite the long hike, at nightfall tomorrow I still won't be at the top. I´ll stay at the lodge up there, and will finish the climb the next morning at 3 or so to reach the top by sunrise. I´ll stay another night at the lodge, and will come down the next day and plan to finish the trip with a dip ... read more

Saturday 15th - Wednesday 19th Just a brief run down as i'm on the clock! Will fill in more details soon! Saturday - long day of travelling to San Jose, Costa Rica. Just chilled at a hostel. Sunday - Met up with my cousin Jon and we got a tiny but colourful plane to Manuel Antonio near Quepos on the south west coast of Costa Rica. Afternoon was spent in the sea and watching the sun set followed by a great meal of Wasabi and Mahi Mahi (fish! i usually hate it!) and drinks at a local bar listening to some very cheesy classic rock! Monday - Got the bus down the road and then walked to a very secluded beach area where I did some fantastic snorkling. I was hovering round the coast area but ... read more

So...Hola!! I'm doing great still, everything is perfect. I'm up in Santa Elena right now and it's really, really beautiful here. It is such a change from the coast, but I do miss the beach. It's almost cold here at night time, but it's still pretty hot during the day. Today we went to the Monteverde Cloud Forest and did the zip lines and sky walk tours. It was so much fun. There was also this crazy Tarzan swing which was awesome. They just chuck you off the platform and you fly out over the canopy on this big bungy swing, it was crazy. I bought a disposable camera so I won't get to see those pics for a while, but the girls I'm with now are just going to send me the photos from today ... read more

I am now home and sitting at my desk in fact. If it was not for the great memories and overall experience it would feel like I never even left. It is funny to come home and realize how easy it is to fall right back into the routine I had left. Not saying the routine is bad, I always enjoy hanging out with my roommates and other friends. Plus, living in Newport Beach is awesome. When you look for it, one can easily find the sense of community that exists on the penisula; additionally, we have the ocean as our backyard. Life is good here. As for the recap for the last couple days we were in Costa Rica. Everything ended on a good note more or less. Thursday we hopped on a bus from ... read more
