So I have been in Quepos for about a week now and am really liking it so far. The first night here was somewhat of a problem for me, but ever since then it has been awesome. The first night was tough because my homestay was not exactly the safe middle class home that was promised by the program. The house was down a dark muddy alley behind the bus station and next to the junk yard. Not exactly the pretty Costa Rican scenery that they show in the guide books. Not that I expected to be living it up on the beach, but this was a little rediculous. When the bus dropped Meredith (my roommate) and I off we had to trudge through the mud with all of our bags while mangy stray dogs barked ... read more

hey this is just a really quick note to everyone but the situation got quite bad here in costa rica in terms of our project not working out. It looks like we´re now moving country!! I think we´ll be moving to either Chile or Bolivia and I´ll try to write on here again when there´s more time´. It´s just been a bit hectic recently and so I´ve not have time. My partner had to go to hospital but everything´s ok now. Let me know how you´re all getting on. I´ll try to update soon. Lots of love jem xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx... read more

We both completed our scuba classes so we left the Bay Islands to head down to Nicaragua. We spent one night in Managua and then 3 nights in Granada. Unfortunatley, our volunteer project did not work out, the person that we were in contact with was back in Boston when we were there. He put us in contact with a local person that was also involved in the project but she did not speak english and our spanish is still pretty poor so it was impossible to communicate and we went out to the site twice and no one seemed to be working. From Granada we headed down to Tamirindo, Costa Rica for 2 nights and now we are staying with Mike's aunt Ana and uncle Javier back in Manuel Antonio. Its always nice to be ... read more

Manuel Antonio was really an amazing park. I would definitely recommend heading there in the rainy season, considering it felt like we had the park all to ourselves with the exception of only a few other hikers. We have heard that the place gets a bit overrun in the dry season with tour buses lining up on the street outside. Our seven dollar entry fee was well spent as we saw an abundance of wildlife, interesting flora and beautiful beaches. The hiking was cool due to the trails being shaded by the tree canopy. However, I would also recommend hiking in the early morning - the afternoons can get quite hot here. Bring water as well, which can be purchased from folks on the street outside the entrance. No maps are sold nor are they needed ... read more

After spending the past few weeks heading down the coast, enjoying small beach towns along the way, Mike and I have come to realize that what had appeared to be insect and spider bites is now a serious case of poison ivy. I can’t tell you how many people have said they didn’t even think Costa Rica had poison ivy. Let me assure everyone that this lovely little plant is alive and thriving here…grrrr… I have to say though that dealing with the pharmacies directly (as is custom here instead of going to the doctors) has been decent. I have been given the proper antihistamine and lotions but have basically been told that it will be a slow recovery and that nothing will really stop the constant itching. Both legs, from my knees front and ... read more

Hey all, Sorry been out of touch for a while. Internet is expensive and slow here, and i guess you were getting sick of sunset photos at Santa Teresa. So on to a different place - Montezuma! Ali and tripped there for a day from Santa Teresa last week just for something different, and we had heard the waterfalls there were incredible. Montezuma is a funky little town only about 1.5hrs from Santa Teresa so we hitched a ride with a good kiwi friend most of the way (on the back of his flatbed truck getting mouthfuls of dirt) then were lucky enough to meet a local Montezuma guy called randall on the bus the rest of the way. I say this was lucky because we met him at the waterfalls later (which are a nice ... read more

Hey everyone, I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to write on this thing but I've not had much internet access and it's been a fairly eventful week. Hope you're all doing well at home. I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who donated money or sponsored me or helped in any way to get me out here! Well, I arrived in Costa Rica last Friday (8th), which actually feels like a lifetime ago. When we arrived it was hunid and raining, so not the welcome we were hoping for! Won't come as a surpirse to some of you that i was sick when we landed anf again after the car journey to the eco lodge in Vara Blanca, near the other girls' project. The lodge was beautiful, with a cosy ... read more

It was independance day in Costa Rica today. And a very peaceful independance it was too. Flag displays and school children marching down the street at night with lanterns and playing drums. Independance was peacefully declared for Central America by Guatemala (i think it was), and Costa Rica has not had an army for the last 50 years, so the country has an incredibly peaceful feeling (There is even a university of peace!). Just imagine how much money they save on military which they are able to put into education and health etc. No wonder ticos are well educated with good social systems, even if they don't have much for development. We have fallen in love with so many people in Santa Teresa (and other places in Costa Rica!). i know you guys won't get the ... read more

Ok guys, I know a few of you have been waiting for a few of these photos so here goes... We're staying at an amazing hostel called 'Brunela' (which is the spanish, feminine version of the name Bruce, and also the name of the leading lady in a novel written by the owner - go figure..). Since we're here for a few weeks Juan (the owner) is only charging us $4 a night, for which we get the BEST coffee in the world free every morning, a cosy room which we share with one other guy, Todd - American, (we get the whole mezzanine upstairs), free use of the surf boards and a WHOLE LOT OF FUN. Brunela is basically a bachelor pad for surfers (mostly from argentina and uruguay at the moment) and Ali and ... read more
