The cloud forest looked quite a lot like the muggy forests of Pennsylvania and seemed slightly less rainy, with many more screams in the distance - not of monkeys, but of zipliners, and the monkeys and other animals have all been scared away in this natural amusement park for Americans, but I guess that's what pays for this treasure to be protected; besides, a hiking tour with a botanist who could call animals to him was really interesting and entertaining, especially when the American tourists got upset with him for "believing" in evolution.... read more

So by now we were sure we would be woriking away at an established organic farm with several other interesting wwoofers. Scarfing back delicious raw food cusine while having in depth conversations about different aspects of non religious spirituality and than in our leisure time taking part in the yoga workshops that were advertised when we agreed to stay at RAWTREAT for the first two weeks of the summer. Instead we're staying with a wonderful man named Robert who couldn't be happier to host us on a whim. Being a little silly as we both are from time to time we forgot to take into account the fact that ehre in Costa Rica it is wonter time, meanign the sun doesn't wait out untill 8 or 9 pm like it does in Canada's summer months, but ... read more

Here some friends and I found a comfortable wooden dormitory with a nice breeze and only some protection from the strongest deluge I've ever seen, with water to the knees in the streets, quickly draining into the sea, echoless and forgotten by the next morning.... read more

This must-visit park is impressive - so many species easy to spot, including sloths, crocs, and maybe squirrel monkeys, if the American lady and her daughter didn't kill them all, though they were just feeding them bananas, and I idiotically took a half of one that they offered because the monkeys were so cute when they came and took it our of our hands, scampering a few branches away to eat in peace, when a man from the town humbly approached and asked us not to feed them anymore because bananas aren't indigenous to the area and the monkeys don't know to stop eating, so the villagers sometimes find them in the jungle, dead from diarrhea, and I nodded and felt a guilty ignorance, but after he left the lady said, "Hunh, he's just jealous," and ... read more

Hi everyone- sorry it´s taken so long to add an entry. Martina and I have been in Monteverde since Saturday and tomorrow we´re heading for the beach town of Samara. Saturday, June 10th: Martina and I signed up to take the ¨Jeep-Boat-Jeep¨from La Fortuna to Monteverde. ¨MiniVan-LeakySkiff-MiniVan¨was more like it. But we made it and ended up staying at Pension Santa Elena, a half hour bus ride from the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. We soon found out that Montverde´s weather is very wet- it´s sunny in the morning and rainy all afternnon. So when we arrived at noon, it had just started to rain. We checked out the Frod and Toad museum and saw some truly weird- and one quite frightening- examples of amphibian life in Costa Rica. Martina went to bed early while I headed ... read more

Heading back north from Panama, I crossed the border back into Costa Rica and headed to Chacarita to talk with the park rangers. I arranged to go back to Piedras Blancas, but first spent a fun night on the town with Fernando in Rio Claro - met his children and had karaoke sung to me! Rode in to the park with Arturo and the river was so incredibly high. The May trees were still in flower so there was lots of yellow coverage everywhere. The Raleigh construction site was looking good - Phase III had done a great job on finishing the roofs and painting what they could of the cabins and there was almost no sign of where our camp had been so browny points on the environmental impact. I was seriously impressed by how ... read more

Things have been AMAZING here in Costa Rica. The week in San Jose went well. Me, Tamara, Cathy, Pablo, his brother and girlfriend are going to Daddy Yankee on June 8th! We got VIP tickets and I´m so excited! This past weekend we went to Manuel Antonio and it was so much fun. We arrived Friday around noon and swam at the beach and pool all day. One of the coolest things happened, when we were sitting at the pool drinking, a monkey was jumping around the trees right next to the tree. It was the first time I had seen a monkey in its own habitat and not in a zoo or park. That night we went to eat at El Avion and everyone left but me, Katie, Christie and Bob. We stayed behind and ... read more

Into the cloud forest today; we have been so lucky to not have rain. Even though it is the cloud forest, it is unlikely we would have seen the famous resplendent quetzal if there had been rain. We entered the cloud forest with our private guide, Carlos (he is seen in the Lodge video referred to on 20 May), and he was on a mission to have us see the quetzal. There is a bricked path through the forest which is a little difficult to walk on but helps you keep your footing. Carlos showed us many insects and birds, but always chasing the quetzal whose call he could easily identify. The guides all know all the individual bird songs and usually mimic them pretty well. If you call a bird, it will answer because most ... read more

Travelling to the Monteverde Cloud Forest area from San Jose is like a two hour trip on Mr. Toad's wild ride. A big part of the road up the mountains is a rocky, gravel, narrow road which shares space with tour buses and locals, even very young kids herding their brahma cows up the mountain and vaqueros on horseback. Very harrowing; everything I read before the trip said don't try to drive the road and I'm glad I didn't. Omar has made the trip tons of time and he is a very cautious driver. It may have taken us a little longer but we were able to see some wildlife along the way, including a rare sighting of a laughing falcon. We would not have spotted it on our own. We also saw a pair of ... read more
