I promise that this story is not all bad, actually for the most part, it was an incredible couple of days. I had talked to an old friend named Derek about a week or two ago, he mentioned that he had some other friends coming from our hometown to come visit him, he lives in San Jose now. I left him a message on his cell phone, and he traced the number back to me, so we called each other a few times but never made any firm plans. I got done with a canopy tour on Thursday morning and was sitting at the bar at my work having a beer with the clients when the phone rang. It was Derek, and he said he was in the harbor, but I could not see his boat. ... read more

What a difference it has been in weather from La fortuna out here on the coast! We made a stop in Monteverde, a town created by some quakers from Alabama in the '40s that wanted to avoid getting drafted. Very nice and expensive hotels around there. We went on a canopy tour where they fire you down steel cables across valleys...it was awesome, such a rush! We were en route to Montezuma on the bus and ended up in Putarenas, a tiny penninsula that used to be a major port about 10 years ago i think. Since then the port had moved and the town was needless to say "run down" I wouldn't walk around after dark there. We took the ferry and it took about 2 hours and we met Daniel, a guy from Switzerland ... read more

The title of this entry says it all. I´ve gone too long without updating. I´ll try to pick up where I left off. I was in David, Panama the last time I updated and now I am in Golfito, Costa Rica. This is what I did in between: Tom and I went to Pedasí a small town south of Las Tablas on the Azuero Penninsula in Panama. If you look on a map Azuero is the bulge on the south and center part of the country. The plan was to find a place to stay during Carnevales. Las Tablas has the largest and most authentic Carnevales in all of Central America. So since we were close we thaught we´d check it out. We took a day trip up to Las Tablas (1 hour north). All of ... read more

We left La Fortuna at 8am on Saturday morning, and caught a bus to the nearby lake. From there we caught a small boat across the Lake for an hour, which was a rally nice trip, and then another connecting bus waiting for us st the other side of the lake, all exclusively for us. Then it was a couple of hours drive to the town of Monteverde. We arrived at 1.30pm, so I went for lunch in a restaurant that has a tree in the middle of it, and then went back to the hotel for a well deserved Siesta! At 5.30pm we were picked up for our next excurision, a night time walk in The Hidden Valley Rainforest. As most Rainforest creatures are nocturnal, seeing them at night is a good way to see ... read more

well, my suspisions of never leaving this place are proving to be true, there is no need to move when you are in a spot like this...havent really left the hammocks in 3 days...recoverin from a wave that got the best of me, and my board...dislocated the ole shoulder (not really that bad, its a pesky reoccuring injury that mount seymour gave me) and broke my board, but it is being fixed and will be back on the water soon...must say though doing nothing and being totally content to do so is a good time in its own right...went fishing last night for 3 hours and caught yellowfin tunas and red snapper and supplied the hostel with a fish feast...thats all for now later, peAce, shane.... read more

Hola amigos! Well it's been a long time since I wrote last time, but I can tell you I have tried.. Uploading a photo has taken about 30 mins until now.. Anyway, this time it seems to work. I don't know where to start. We have traveled all around the country, and Nicaragua, and we've had such a great time. Jenny left today so now I start traveling on my own. So about our trip, I think we have started a new way of traveling - speed traveling. Staying in a place for 3 nights is a long time. Try to squeeze in as much as possible. Do Nicaragua in a week.. Now that I don't have a time limit I guess it will be different. We started off with a week end in San Jose ... read more

Hey, will keep this short and sweet cause los olas grandes (the big waves) are calling my name...the jungle, what can i say...it was exactly as i hoped it would be...in point form... - made a medicinal plant garden with interpretive info for local school kids - went scuba diving for free 4 times, swam with manta rays, sharks and turtles - snorkelling every day - 2 hour hikes to my secluded surf beach, waves all to myself - 6 hour hike to the nearest town to freshen up on whisky/beer stash - struck at by a fer-de-lance, 3rd deadliest snake on the planet, missed by about 10 feet - scorpions in my clothes, monkeys in my room - 19km round trip hike to a 100ft waterfall, accessible only when tides are timed correctly - constant ... read more

What a ridiculous adventure. I honestly thought it was going to be a fun day on the beach, just a simple 2 hour stroll to a great surf spot. Never have I been so wrong before. We left the house around 10:45, wearing tons of sunscreen and pretty stoked to be out on a cool trip. It was about 90 degrees when we left, and extremely humid, so much so that we had to walk in the waves most of the way just to stay cool. We hiked along the beach, wearing backpacks full of water, snacks, and cameras, and obviously, carrying surfboards. We walked about 6 kilometers, past all of the houses and roads, past the airstrip, then along a coconut plantation. When we arrived at the end of the beach, we had to decide ... read more

Woke up WAY too early this morning to start a long day of running errands. After a long run yesterday afternoon and surfing until dark, my whole body felt completely spent when I woke up this morning. My shoulders are finally getting used to paddling out every day, but my legs are killing me from the running. There is a really cool run from the house into town, a long gravel road (if you would call it that) that follows the bluffs overlooking the bay, crossing small streams teaming with caimen and discarded tires. Once you crest the hill, there is a picturesque view off from the hill looking into the bay and the Pacific beyond. It eventually drops onto the beach for the remainder of the path, roughly 3 kilometers each way. I usually stop ... read more
