Day 4: Snorkelling off Paradise. I saw a fly today, "hi there, I know you". Seen some weird bugs but very few bugs at all and there are Geikos too (at least I think that's what they are). Small enough to fit in your hand and curled tail, cute. I just never have my camera around when I spot them. Everybody says hi here! Not just the locals either, friendlier than even at home in the maritimes. We head to Paradise Restaurant to do some snorkelling. The water is about 30 feet from the main street. See pic below of the street & black coral. The coral doesn't look like much, but just 2 feet out in the water it is spectacular. Grand Cayman is known for the snorkelling. Huge fish just out of my reach ... read more

Day 7: R&R for New Year's Day. I've caught a cold so while the others go touring the island, I stay home to nap and rest on the beach. The water is so warm, 27 degree (80 F) for today as an example, never this warm back home. You can see why the night time dips have been so appealing. I can hear people chatting about the storms in the US and I've seen your pics from our Canadian winter, glad I'm here. We had one morning where it showered just enough to dampen the ground, clouds and rain in the distance but nothing more. Best thing about the island is a tough one to decide… perfect weather (night time lows of 24, daytime ‘winter’ temps of 28) , warm crystal clear water, virtually no ... read more

Day 5: Pirates in the Caribbean. We went shopping in George Town (a few miles down the road from 7 mile beach) across from the snorkeling…outdoor malls & duty free shops. There are more people today as the cruise ships are in port (although there is no port)….I saw some really cool stores, like the one that sells swords, medieval replicas, shields, plate mail… After awhile everyone else heads back, my cousin & I can have fun on our own. So we decide to stop for a bite to eat at Senor Frog’s. Hardly anyone around so we sit on the upper deck. Across the way we can see a guy dressed as a pirate so we ask him to come over and see us. Turns out he’s the photographer for the studio across the street, ... read more

Day 3: Sunday chez Cousin D. My cousin D lives in Grand Cayman and is a Cayman citizen, lucky him! He's the reason we are all here. I have something to learn from him... So my friends ask yourself, what's keeping you from living your big dreams? So I went to church...pentecostal, in a sea of beautiful dark faces all dressed in their sunday best like you would do for church on easter sunday. Little boys not even school age in pressed shirts & ties. Little girls in organza dresses & ribbons in their hair. An alter decorated with big red poinsettias... It's still Christmas time...wow, hard to believe. Then we have a family dinner at D's house in George Town, the capitol of Grand Cayman. With about a population of 20 thousand, it has over ... read more

Day 1: Boxing day. Up at 3:30 in the morning to prepare for boarding in Halifax, NS. In the air for sunrise and then the long wait in Toronto as our flight attendant was delayed. Serious cheering when a new attendant volunteers to "get us home". Snowing in TO...4pm we hit Grand Cayman. The humidity hits you as you walk down off the plane. We check out our place after stopping for a few necessities. We're hot, tired and running on a couple of hours sleep at best, but this is Grand Cayman :) We drive with the windows down (on the wrong side of the street) as roosters & chickens run loose, but this is no poor country. I dipped my feet into the ocean just to get a quick feel for it and that ... read more

Day 2: Stingrays & bikinis. Our first full day on the island... where do I even start? Let me say some stories & pictures will not be shared here...some will be saved to be shared in person for the people nearest & dearest to me :) So this morning we head out to our boat. We have a boat just to ourselves, the water is spectacular turquoise, the waves have beautiful white peaks. The homes along the wharf are a colorful series of pastels. We head a number of miles out offshore... to swim on a dune with the stingrays. I have no pics of the stingrays on my camera but we did have water cameras with us, once developed back home they'll be shared. I had our 'captain' lift one out of the water so ... read more

Welcome to our blog! Ahead of our little trip of three new continents we've deicided to actually start this given that we can barely contain our excitement anymore! We're still living and working in the Cayman Islands and won't leave here for another 67 days, there's many things to do before then, but for those of you who don't know our little plans they're something like this: 22 July 2009 - Leave the Cayman Islands 1 August 2009 - Fly to Kenya to join our trip... 3 August 2009 - 15 October 2009 Start our trip from Kenya to South Africa, all organised and looked after by a nice company. October - December 2009 - Fly from South Africa to Cameroon and somehow, with no help or guidance, make our way towards Morocco, via Mali. Late ... read more

Today was the last port day with Mel and Jess and we were in Grand Cayman. In my opinion, the site to see in Grand Cayman is stingray city where you can snorkel with the stingrays and Mel and Jess agreed with my suggestion. We did a combo tour where we got to go snorkeling along the coral reef and then with the rays. While I've been out with the stingrays probably about a half dozen times, this specific tour and the snorkel spot was new for me, so that was nice. WOW. The snorkeling along the reef was incredible. Definitely one of the best snorkel sites I've been to, and at this point, I've been to a lot! I've seen more fish on other tours, but there were still plenty around. But as far as ... read more

We overslept. That is how our day started in Grand Cayman. We had hoped to possibly go snorkeling before we were to meet everyone in our Shazam group at Senor Frogs for a big West Coast Swing dance party, instead, we had enough time to walk around town for a little while before heading over for music and dancing. What little we saw of Grand Cayman was just a standard port town. Fully content with all we'd accomplished at the other ports, it was nice to just kick back and have a few drinks and dance with everyone in a change of scenery. Senor Frog's are all over the caribbean. They have crazy signs plastered all over the cielings and walls, as well as shots poured freely into any open and welcoming mouth. Grand Cayman was ... read more

Ginny is still here cruising with me (oh, and we did luck out with a guest cabin and dining room table again this cruise!!) and today we’re in Grand Cayman. I think the best thing to see in Grand Cayman is Stingray City, so I’d recommended it to Gin and she was all for it. She also wanted to do some snorkeling during her time down here, so we did a combination tour today. We were bused across the island to board our motor boat that took us out into the sea. We stopped at three different snorkel spots today. We went to the Coral Gardens where we swam with fish and saw coral. Then there was a second snorkel site where we saw starfish! This was a new thing for me, so I was quite ... read more
