A day of diving planned... the only one on the cruise due to the holidays and short port periods. P.S. Never dive with a cruise ship. That's a note to self and to others who are experienced divers. On many different levels, it wasn't the way I like to dive. This may be boring to the non-divers who read this, just a warning. Cruise ships cater to laziness, lets be honest here for a moment. Going from point A to point B is taken care of through money. It's a requirement for many people's vacationing... not all, but many. Certainly not my requirement, I am satisfied to have a fruity drink and a spa. Now, is diving a lazy sport? Not in my book, though the ability is there to some extent. It's what I ... read more

Today was our last day in the Caribbean, so we had to cram in all the things we wanted to do, but had not yet. That included sleeping in! So, we got a late start, leaving our hotel around 10:30. We decided to spend the morning snorkeling at 3 different sites. We went up to Cemetery Beach first. There is a reef about 20 yards off the beach. It was teeming with all kinds of fish! We had read that people bring food for the fish, so when they saw us, they swarmed (assuming we had food). At first, it was kind of scary and gross! Huge fish were inches away, a few even touched me. Ugh! Then, after you got used to it, it was neat to see fish that up close. At one point, ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving! We began the day early again, so Bryan could go on his last 2 dives. I finished up the packing and read for awhile before I checked out of the Sunshine Suites. Luckily, the Ritz was within walking distance, so around 11:30, I walked over and checked into our room. The Ritz Carlton is huge and luxurious! When you check in, not only do they give you a map of the property, they have someone escort you to your room! Bryan met me in the lobby, happy from his dives. He classified his last dive to Trinity Caves as "excellent!" After he checked out the room, we had to turn around and leave again for our afternoon activities. We walked over to the Sunshine Suites and got our car and luggage. Then, went to ... read more

Today, we were up early again. Bryan got ready for his second day of diving. Today, he was going to the much more calm West Wall, instead of the choppy waters of the North Wall, so he was happy about that. While he was out exploring the ocean, I headed back to the beach for a few hours. I grabbed a somewhat shady spot, set my chair down and relaxed. When Bryan returned from diving, we got cleaned up and drove to the West Bay area. We ate lunch at the Caylpso Grill, which I had read tons of fabulous recommendations about (especially their sticky toffee pudding dessert). I ordered the fish and chips, Bryan got a bacon and brie sandwich. I have to say, I was not impressed with my meal. A disappointment after the ... read more

Today was a very relaxing day. We got up early and ate breakfast. Then, we went our separate ways: Bryan went diving for the first time in the Cayman Islands and I hung out at the beach. The sun was hot and the water was chilly, but a beautiful shade of turquoise! I soaked it all up, while reading magazines. It was great! Bryan got back from his dive in time for lunch. So, we went to a local pizzeria called Ragazzi. We ordered a pizza to split--rosemary chicken, potatoes, onions and sweet peppers. It sounds kinda gross, but it was actually delicious! The fresh baked bread was also fantastic. After lunch, we visited the Tortuga Rum Cake Factory!!! The factory had a window where you could look into the bakery and see them make the ... read more

We woke up refreshed this morning about 7:30 AM (which is really sleeping in compared to most of our vacations). We took advantage of our free continental breakfast :) and got ready for the day. Around 10, we arrived in George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands. It is also where the cruise ship port is located. Today, there were only 2 ships (6,000 people) in port. We spent most of the day just walking around and doing my favorite vacation activity, shopping for souvenirs! It was quite interesting to see all the Christmas decorations already up around town. Stores were even playing reggae versions of Christmas carols. :) The main thing the Cayman Islands is known for is their Tortuga rum (even though it is actually distilled in Jamaica). There is, however, a Tortuga ... read more

Our first day on Grand Cayman: Our trip began when we left home at 10:30 PM on Nov. 21. We had to connect through Charlotte, NC. So, we got to Charlotte at 6 AM and left for Grand Cayman at 9:45 AM. After some very long flights, we finally arrived here around 1 PM. All the traveling was worth it, though. It is beautiful here! We rented a tiny little car for our week on the island. They drive on the opposite side of the road here, so Bryan had fun learning to drive on the left. (We did spend a considerable amount of time driving with our wipers on, instead of the turn signal! :) However, he is now a pro. We drove to our hotel, the Sunshine Suites, excited to be able to freshen ... read more

Welcome to Hell
Hellish rock formations

Grand Cayman has all the adventure you could ask for. You can visit hell, really you can. You can swim with stingrays that could eat small children, be stung by the deadly lion fish, and if you take a few swim strokes off shore you'll find yourself floating over 5,000 feet of water. Then there is the land, where you can get lost in the dense jungles with snakes, spiders and insects that fly away with unsuspecting tourists like yourself. Well, that is all pretty fabricated lies about the island, but partially true. There is a city that is officially named "Hell" due to the unique rock formation that the lava has formed, definitely a good place to visit if you like different rock formations. The stingrays are big and you can hand feed them, but ... read more

The last days in paradise. Shopping anyone? Perfumeries for my scent of the day and I got my MAC makeup ...happy dance! I finally get my turtle burger and it is worth the wait. I move to D's house in George Town as we have left 7 Mile Beach for good. It's a beautiful house with roosters that roam the neighborhood and wake me in the morning... Everyday is the same beautiful weather... This cold knocked some energy out of me so I passed up the opportunity to head back to Senor Frogs. I can still enjoy the weather. I'm still on vacation, so I watch movies and hang by the pool in the backyard. We did do a little more shopping. There was a little glass blowing shop by the water and an art studio ... read more

Day 6: Fireworks on the beach. New Year's Eve … My cousin & I head to World Gym for a Power Yoga class, walking distance from 7 Mile Beach. The instructor looks East Indian, dark skin & hair, pretty girl but she spends way too much time staring at herself in the mirror rather than watching the class. My muscles are a little sore from that work out, but good tunes. Some of the other family members are going to a turtle farm, I’m not interested unless we’re eating them. So we stroll down 7 Mile beach back towards George Town where we can see the cruise ships just offshore. On the water you can see people swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, parasailing, sailing & on seadoos. Would have loved to scuba, but that’s out now. I’ve caught ... read more
