Today was our last day in the Caribbean, so we had to cram in all the things we wanted to do, but had not yet. That included sleeping in! So, we got a late start, leaving our hotel around 10:30.
We decided to spend the morning snorkeling at 3 different sites. We went up to Cemetery Beach first. There is a reef about 20 yards off the beach. It was teeming with all kinds of fish! We had read that people bring food for the fish, so when they saw us, they swarmed (assuming we had food). At first, it was kind of scary and gross! Huge fish were inches away, a few even touched me. Ugh! Then, after you got used to it, it was neat to see fish that up close. At one point, I attempted to dive down deeper in the water to look at the coral and I landed on a fish. Poor guy!
We spent about an hour at Cemetery Beach. Then, we decided to go to George Town and visit 2 other snorkel sites: the Wreck of the Cali and Cheeseburger Reef. Sadly, when we got there, the water was way too rough
to get in. There were huge waves crashing over the rocks and a big under current. 😞
We drove farther south to Smith's Cove to see if snorkeling would be any better there, but again encountered rough seas. We did get out of the car and explore the area. It was a pretty spot!
We headed back to the Ritz and changed out of our wet swimsuits. Then, we spent the afternoon driving to the East End of the island. While Grand Cayman looks small, it takes about an hour to drive to the opposite side.
We stopped at Portofino's for lunch. We sat outside and admired the beautiful turquoise water. I had a jerk chicken quesadilla and more conch fritters. I actually liked these better than last night's. Bryan had chilli fry wih chicken, an Indian dish. All was very good! Especially, the rum drink I ordered called a Yellow Bird (rum, banana liqueur, pineapple juice and orange juice!).
We continued our journey around the island and went to Rum Point, a beach at the very north part of the island. There, we sat on the beach for a while, it was quite peaceful. We
also had a drink at Kaibo, a rum punch for me and a Cayman Colada (pina colada with raspberry liqueur) for Bryan. Mmmmm....
Then, we drove back to the hotel for sunset. Sadly, it was too cloudy and gray to see the sun setting today. Instead, we got ready for the night submarine trip we had booked for 7 PM. When we arrived at the Atlantis sub store, there was no one there. We waited for a while and decided it must have been canceled due to the stormy seas. (a note on the door would have been nice...)
Saddened, we decided to just go out for dinner instead. We drove up to West Bay to Ristorante Pappagallo, a restaurant that won the "best overall experience" title. It was very pretty! We were greeted in the lobby by Humphrey Bogart, the African grey parrot. The restaurant had 5 other beautiful parrots too. Since we had a large, late lunch, we just ordered an appetizer and dessert to split. We decided to be adventurous and order the homemade sweet potato gnocchi. It was a mistake since neither of us could stand it. Oh, well. Dessert was better--a white chocolate
mousse cake with banana. It kind of tasted like a banana cream pie.
When we left the restaurant, it was pouring rain. So, we just went back to our hotel and reluctantly packed for our trip home tomorrow.
Overall, we had a great time, relaxing in the Caymans. What a nice trip!
