We woke up refreshed this morning about 7:30 AM (which is really sleeping in compared to most of our vacations). We took advantage of our free continental breakfast 😊 and got ready for the day.
Around 10, we arrived in George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands. It is also where the cruise ship port is located. Today, there were
only 2 ships (6,000 people) in port. We spent most of the day just walking around and doing my favorite vacation activity, shopping for souvenirs!
It was quite interesting to see all the Christmas decorations already up around town. Stores were even playing reggae versions of Christmas carols. 😊 The main thing the Cayman Islands is known for is their Tortuga rum (even though it is actually distilled in Jamaica). There is, however, a Tortuga rum cake factory on the island. Hopefully, we will go on a tour later in the week.
On every street corner it seemed, there were Tortuga stores, where you could buy the rum cakes and bottles of liquor. Bryan was excited to find that the store closest to the cruise ship terminal even had free samples of all the different flavors of
rum. We tried: mango, pineapple, orange, vanilla, spiced, and banana rums. Surprisingly, the mango was the best!
We were hot and hungry from walking around all morning. So, we stopped for lunch at a place called Breezes. Bryan and I split a jerk chicken sandwich and a pina colada. (Bryan needed a drink after all the shopping! 😊 The sandwich was not that great, but the drink was super yummy.
After lunch, we walked around some more and found a spot to snorkel called Eden Rock. Luckily, we threw our snorkeling stuff in the car this morning! So, we got all our gear on and jumped into the water. The water was a tad cold, but we adjusted after a few minutes. There were some blue tang fish and some pretty yellow and black striped fish swimming around. The best though were the huge tarpons!
We headed back to our hotel after snorkeling. Since we were already wet, we decided to walk over to the beach and hang out there for sunset again. Our hotel has beach chairs you can use, so we set those up and relaxed on the beach. We did jump in the water
for a bit too.
For dinner, we drove to a place called the Wharf. They had outdoor dining right on the water. Our table was right above the spot where the restaurant feeds tarpon at night. So, there were hundreds of them swimming around, waiting for dinner! It was neat to watch them as we ate. I had chicken and sweet potatoes, while Bryan had a three course steak dinner special. His appetizer was baked scallops (which he would not eat, so I did!) They were left in the shell and looked so pretty. They tasted good too. For dessert, we shared some mango cheesecake.
After dinner, we stopped at Foster's supermarket for some water and soda. The prices here are much higher than in the States ($6 for a container of strawberries!). However, most of the food was exactly the same as in our grocery stores. They did have more British offerings though, being in the British West Indies.
We came back to the hotel room and got ready for bed. Bryan will be getting up early to go on his first dive tomorrow morning!
