“The Trip Home” After completing repairs to our starboard saildrive, we decided to revisit some of our favorite Abaco Islands. We had several reasons for this. Some of our friends from George Town were now arriving in the Abacos on their way north, we needed to make sure the saildrive repairs were really done correct and we liked cruising these islands. We joined our friends on “Nauti-Nauti” and “Star” in Hope Town for a few days and then went on to Great Guana Cay to meet up with Truit & Val on ”Margaret”. Finally on April 12th, we had a favorable weather window and the time had come to head Double-Wide west toward the US. Our first challenge was to sail around “The Whale”. This is a relatively short ocean passage out around Whale Cay but ... read more

Royal Island (Eleuthera) vers Little Harbour (Abacos)- Dimanche le 13 avril Ouf !

I had the most amazing week. First and foremost, I used my passport for the first time ever! Pretty spectacular. I had a job interview at the the Island School for the whole week of April 13th to April 19th and it was a very positive experience and I am pretty sure there is no other secondary education institute quite like it (if anyone thinks that there is please let me know). The Location and Getting There The school is located on the lower part of Eleuthera about five miles south of the settlement Deep Creek (Google Earth will show you the coordinates 24.835 Latitude and 76.325 Longitude). It is a hour flight from Nassau on Bahama's Air, but getting to Nassau from Bozeman, well that is an adventure in and of itself! Some of you ... read more

“Adventures at the Top of the Bahamas” The Abacos are the northern most group of islands in the Bahamas. The central anchorage is Marsh Harbor, which is a big city by out island standards. For example, it has a traffic light. Only one, but it is the first one we have seen since Nassau back in December. Circling Marsh Harbor are several other smaller towns on other cays. They also have a small bakery that specializes in homemade bread and pastries. We had hot-cross buns for Easter and have really enjoyed their coconut bread. Nancy’s sister Gayle decided to fly down to Marsh Harbor over her spring break and spend 8 days with us. She arrived just after we had resupplied and visited the big Laundromat to wash all of the dirty clothes we accumulated on ... read more

My last posting from the Jamaican cyber café, in 3 parts… YESTERDAY AFTERNOON Acephale, acephalos, akephalos, akephale... akefalh, -fali... you name it, yesterday we went through all the combinations. The lady helping me was smirking by now, as if we were never going to find it. But we just tried all the possibilities, until we got to AKEFALO. “There we are!” she said, as if she was pleased for me. “How do you say that?” and she swung the PC monitor around so that I could read it. AKEFALO LTD. DATE OF INCORPORATION 1962 She went off to find the file. A few minutes later I saw her head appear at the back of the room. She was talking to someone else, and from time to time both of them glanced at me, then quickly looked ... read more

I was only in Boston for a day before I took off for the Bahamas. The weather in Prague had been pretty nice, but the weather in Nassau was amazing! It was in the high 70's and low 80's the whole time I was there. I was working for a spring break travel company which was a lot of fun except for a few isolated incidents involving high schoolers throwing up on me....but to be living in the Bahamas for free....it was worth it.... read more

Yesterday, whilst I waited for the news from Greece, I headed over to Paradise Island. This is smaller and narrower than New Providence, and close enough for a bridge (there are two). However, there is also a sea taxi, which runs every half hour, and has that definite Bahamian style to it... “When does it leave?” I ask the ticket girl. “Twenty-five minutes.” There are already some people sitting inside the ferry, waiting. I decide I don’t want to sit for that length of time. “You gotta get on for the time to start.” she tells me. “The time don’t start counting down til you get on.” She tries to persuade me that the 25 minutes before departure will not start ticking down until I am aboard. I wait in the shade and get on just ... read more
